The Octopath Traveler Tabletop RPG Rulebook has a section on the world for Osterra, but since the gods are the same both in Osterra and in this new land, we can assume they are the same in general. It says that all 12 (and therefore all 8) are siblings, and Aelfric is the youngest of the 12. Not only is He the one with the Sacred Flame that can banish the evil machinations of Vide, but we can assume that the others fell first because They were protecting Their little brother. It's a sad little note that helps humanize Them just a bit, even if They are gods.
