Get yourself some AKG K361s. You're not going to get active noise cancelling without wireless so get stuff from a place with a decent returns policy and try things until you find a pair that fit you well, the K361s would be a solid place to start.

Update: ended up just going with the 7hz Salnotes Zero, unironically because the Chu 2 costing slightly less than the Chu 1 on Amazon made me vaguely anxious that I was getting ripped off somewhere. Haven't exactly put them through a ton of testing yet, but they definitely feel like a real step up from the random pack-in earbuds I was using before. Thanks for the recommendations, people.

Honestly that might just be because the Chu got incredible levels of hype as the start of that brief rush of great $20 IEMs so resellers probably jacked their prices. Also looking at the Chu 2 on Shenzhen Audio I noticed Tin have put out what I'm pretty sure is the 7th iteration of the P1, its just sad at this point. Also even though I really don't need more IEMs the Tangzu Wan'er looks loving sick so I might get them just to go on a shelf.

Not really? I know some of Fiio's IEMs have come with triple flange tips but Etys are such a particular thing that I don't even know of any third party tips like them. I'd say try to find a third party cable for the ER2 that has a mic and get those if you find one. Else you might have to drop the mic requirement.

I think Ety's first party cables are generally overpriced for how bad they can be, but if it's the only option I haven't heard anything specifically bad about their bluetooth kits so that plus an ER2 would do what you want. Also look around for deals on the ER2, Adorama specifically has deals on them pretty regularly.

Yeah and since it's specifically the Playstation division doing this acquisition and they've been kinda crazy with audio for the PS5 it makes total sense if the gaming stuff was doing well for Audeze.

The new Pulse Elite headset and Pulse Explore TWS seem like the first products of this since they both use planar drivers.

This I didn't know though, if those are tuned well (big if given Sony's current track record for TWS buds) they could be legitimately great. I have the Pulse 3D headphones and they sound better than I expected so maybe there's hope.

Unless there's been a big shift in over ear ANC recently, you want whatever the most recent Sony's are. The WH-1000XM5s.

There are people who swear by them for sleep, but if you're someone who moves about in your sleep they're probably not a good idea. The Anker Dots work nicely, they're pretty small and I'm pretty sure their current Sleep line is just rebranded Dots.

Yeah if they're Find My enabled the owner should theoretically be able to find them using that, but if not all you can really do is post a found ad and hope the owner sees it.

Is it like Airtags where it just passively connects to any Apple devices that are around? The name when I connect them is Airpods Pro - Find My, so I'm assuming that the owner realized they lost them and are trying to find them now. I don't have any Apple devices myself but I've got family who are all in on the ecosystem, would being near them be enough for them to show up if they try to geolocate them?

Alternatively, if I change the name of them to something like my phone number, would it show up in the owner's Find My app?

If it has the UWB chip (effectively an integrated AirTag) in it'll show on the Find My network, which is a mesh network of every iPhone that hasn't opted out of the system. It depends on whether it's Airpods Pro 1st or 2nd gen though, 2nd gen has the UWB chip so can be precisely located through the network, 1st gen all you can do through Find My is make the case make a sound to find it in your house. I've never had to find something through the wider network though so I don't have first hand experience of how it shows up on device.

As far as I know the Android Tracker app is just for finding Airtags. The pods showing up on the network will be reliant on someone else nearby having an iPhone in the network, which tbh is quite likely.

Something that came to mind over the last few days, with USB-C becoming more and more standard on devices do you think there's actually a path where the 3.5mm jack actually becomes obsolete outside specialist use in favour of USB Audio?

Anyway Moondrop are making a Discman.

There's also the Powerbeats (non-pro) which have a tether but seem to be discontinued.

Ok Comboomer posted:

Beats has a good one in the £50 range with the tether in between like how you like it, beyond that the nicer Beats (with no tether) will have ANC and ear hooks and “find my” features so maybe you don’t lose them as easily.

Beats Flex these days have had their price jacked up to £70, which sucks because at £50 they were untouchable in their class. I still think they're worth the money and the right call (though their different shape tips instead of different sizes remains dumb) but y'know. Also no using Find My on an Android phone.

True wireless definitely has its glaring problems. Is there a reason they never seem to have a key ring or something else to attach them to something important?

The current Airpods Pro case has a place to connect a strap. Though I'll say I've not really worried about ever losing my Airpods since the first week of having them. But then I'm also the kind of person who doesn't go anywhere outside my house without knowing exactly where everything I'm carrying is.

Techmoan did a whole video on the subject a few months ago since the modern Sound Burger record player only has line out, not headphone out. The most simple version is line out is expected to connect to an amp of some kind (either standalone or powered speakers) since it doesn't have one built in, while a headphone jack will have an amp and DAC implemented into the device for boosting the volume. Headphone jacks will function as line outs, but it doesn't go the other way.

B&W don't make them anymore and only due earbuds and the alternatives I can find all seem to be extremely flimsy looking Sony pairs or one from Libratone that has reviews saying that they can fail quickly with guess what, defective cables!

Beats Flex is the only one I still know of.

I don't know if it's different on non-Pro Airpods but my Pros have a very clear flat spot on the stem that needs to be intentionally squeezed to operate, it's not a tap and there's a haptic click to confirm a press. If you don't want to go to the Pros though your best bets are probably either the Beats Studio Buds if you want the nice Apple things like easily connecting to multiple devices, else the Samsung Galaxy Buds 2 (non-pro).

I do not care about high quality audio, I'll probably watch Seinfeld and regular show and such.

Yes they are a thing, but they aren't really cheap. A lot of them are geared to the gamer market since 2.4ghz low latency wireless is useful to that use case, also a lot of them rely on USB dongles which probably won't work with a TV.
