Everything I've read depicts this guy as a drunk loud mouth that liked to pick fights with South Koreans. Is that the kind of thing an Article 15 is used for, as opposed to a court martial? I don't know how this stuff works.

He might actually do okay. If the kims want to use him as some sort of pr coup. Or, he might get tortured and die

I wish him luck in his new career of being the bad guy American in North Korean action movies. Maybe also dramas and comedies.

If hes willing/able to adapt to their society he could potentially end up in their film industry like that other guy. I cant imagine they have many black actors.

I mean anyone who would defect to North Korea rather than have a week of punishment duty and being transferred away is pretty stupid. If he was facing a long term in military prison then maybe being a pet American in North Korea would be a better option, but he's fleeing putting up with poo poo for a while. Not a good time, but better than sixty years in North Korea.

oh dope posted:Everything I've read depicts this guy as a drunk loud mouth that liked to pick fights with South Koreans. Is that the kind of thing an Article 15 is used for, as opposed to a court martial? I don't know how this stuff works. Article 15 is generally offered as an option to a US service member accused of a crime, where the other alternative is court martial. If the suspect chooses the court martial, they waive their right to a trial, and instead allow their commanding officer to investigate, determine if they're guilty, and assign a punishment. By choosing the Article 15, the accused will generally get a lesser punishment than if they were convicted at court martial trial. Nonjudicial punishment under Article 15 also has some caps on how severely the offender can be punished, for example, someone punished under Article 15 can't be kicked out with a dishonorable discharge, which requires a court martial conviction. For things like trying to find a post-military job, a dishonorable discharge is pretty much the kiss of death for anything with a background check, and a court martial conviction trips the same background checks as a federal felony conviction. For something like murder or rape, punishment under Article 15 isn't typically offered, and it's only a court martial on the table.

I haven't seen anything about the guy's MOS, but I also haven't been looking. Depending on what he did for a living in the Army, North Korea will probably also see some value in pumping him for information about his training, the way his unit was organized and equipped, etc. Hell, even if he had a job like Shower, Laundry, & Clothing Repair Specialist - which is a real job in the US Army - the DPRK will probably still realize he has some useful knowledge rattling around in his skull just between basic training and his interaction with other joes. Sucks to be him if he can't tell them what they want to know.
