 Welcome to the third Leagues Cup, a tournament between clubs in Liga MX and Major League Soccer designed specifically for monetary purposes. All 47 clubs from the two leagues will participate in the tournament, with defending domestic champions Los Angeles FC and CF Pachuca getting a direct birth in the knockout stage. HOW IT WORKS The 45 clubs who did not win their domestic league last season have been divided into 15 groups of three. Each group of three plays a round-robin, with the top two clubs in terms of record advance to the knockout round. For marketing purposes, any match tied after 90 minutes goes to a penalty shootout, with the winner getting only two points but the loser getting a single point. Also for marketing purposes, all matches will be played in the US or Canada. The competition lasts from July 21 to August 19, with knockout matches beginning on August 2. HOW TO WATCH If you are outside of Mexico, MLS Season Pass will broadcast the entire tournament. If you're in Mexico, they're going to be broadcast on TUDN networks (I think). In addition, TSN in Canada and Fox Sports and Univision in the US will also broadcast select matches when the Women's World Cup isn't on. WHY YOU CARE Lionel Messi will make his Inter Miami debut against Cruz Azul, and I think people still care about him.
