Yeah before PG-13 was invented, you could get away with a lot in a PG movie. Splash, Dragonslayer, and Poltergeist really pushed the limits of PG. I think Temple of Doom was the last straw that got the MPAA to make a new rating.

Now it's all strictly regimented. The MPAA will let you have exactly one F bomb in a PG-13 movie and it can't refer to sex. The violence can be pretty intense as long as you're a big name director like Spielberg or Nolan.
