Yeah, monsters with DR (damage resistance) against specific attack types are one of the typical Pathfinder gotchas. There are few different ones that'll pop up, and they'll be either annoying or outright kill you first time through if you're not familiar with the system.

Second time you play you just swap in maces on your frontline. I'm not saying that the game going "surprise! this mechanic you've been ignoring can in fact kill you" is good design, exactly, but it's something that'll keep happening and it's usually not going to be insurmountable as long as you read enough combat log tooltips to figure out what's going on and devise an appropriate counter. This may or may not be your definition of a good time.

Yeah, it's just one of those things that happened early enough that I only had one spare bludgeoning weapon, so I just said gently caress it and went the other way, cleared out the rest of the dungeon, and then (after I learned there was turn based combat by accident) came back and did it the old-school way. Also, Amira just hit hard enough that the DR wasn't really as much of a concern when it was done in turn-based.

If I had a suggestion from just general CRPG play, I'd keep a slashing weapon, blunt weapon, and ranged weapon on all of your front line fighters just to handle different DR types. Casters tend to have enough tools to counter certain damage resistances, but it's harder for your fighter to just power through slashing weapon DR if they don't have anything else.

I've been playing monk for my PC and I was able to take a few feats to help punch through DR, like Hammerblow. I need to find a piercing or slashing monk weapon to help with crush resistant enemies, but I did find a nunchaku that has a fire damage component on it.

I'm not overly experienced in Pathfinder rules, so don't take what I say as gospel. But I have played a lot of D&D 3.0/3.5e games and I think there's enough similarity there to draw some conclusions.

I really enjoy this game, but all the timers on quests give me anxiety and the kingdom management tutorial basically makes you waste time if you don't know how it functions already.

Not to derail too hard on kingdom & global time stuff in an LP thread that hasn't gotten that far but, briefly:
- (Almost) every chapter is a fixed length. The next chapter starts at some fixed date, usually with a generous time limit.
- There are some independent timed events where you need to be at a specific place at a specific date. Missing these is bad, but the game will give ample warning.
- For adventuring, generally you want to try to handle the main threat of the chapter quickly. This will stop related problem events from spawning and free you up for side quests and kingdom stuff until the next chapter.
- For management, keep your councillors busy with a focus on handling problems first. If you have personal time to spend then level up your councilors before grabbing lands or doing other opportunities: councilor levels make everything else easier.
- Don't do things that advance the clock several weeks while you have immediate adventuring to do.
- The "cost" of taking your time with adventure stuff or the like is that you might lose out on a single personal kingdom action, which is not very important.

The kingdom layer is thematic but not mechanically great. I don't mind having it there but I don't think setting it to difficult is in any way fun or interesting.

Ah. There's a Pathfinder CRPG thread for both Kingmaker and Wrath of the Righteous, which unfortunately doesn't have either Kingmaker or Wrath of the Righteous in the title so that's a fairly easy mistake to make.

There's also advice for these games in various other sites on the Net if you're interested. GameFAQs and Neoseeker are the best sites I've found for walkthroughs. There are many good Let's Plays on YouTube too. PM me if you need specific advice, I've played these games a few times and watched many YouTube LPs.

If readers are interested and Grey Hunter allows it, I can describe some alternate paths for various events in the game as we get to them. I wish to keep spoilers minimal, though, so I'm holding back till we get to appropriate places. Hope that's ok.

Hero of the soviet union.
Accidental destroyer of planets

We set forth along the side of the Shrike river.

Apparently we can't even walk down a road without being attacked.

Oh, it's just the wildlife.

It goes well for them. We have to spend some time washing blood off us as Amai explodes a couple of them with overenthusiasm.

We make camp, the most important decision is we need good branding, so we will be known as the Leopards Eating faces party, after Epimetheus, the newly named Leopard. It lets people know where they stand with us.

I'm not a great cook, but everything else goes well!

Finally, we arrive at Oleg's trading post.

Is he talking to us? Or the people he's fleeing from?

Oh, mob enforcers, I know how to deal with this.

Violence. Well deserved violence.

Killing people makes me better at killing people, and I feel like I've passed an arbitrary milestone.

My words will shock the enemies with their truth.

My minons also get better.

Yes Oleg, you were very helpful.

He is joined by his wife.

More bandits are on their way, and this guy does not seem to recognise future royalty, though the fire will be useful.

I note the name of the coward.

I then clear out our excess loot.

I'm actually surprised this was a real magic ring!

We then ready ourselves for the attack.

It's night before they attack.

We make sure they get a proper welcome – cleansing fire!

Those not reduced to ash are quickly cleaned up.

The loot includes a fancy magical cloak I appropriate for myself!

Oleg is enjoying the revenge!

Now he's calling me his lord – he's accepted it quickly, though the hundred gold is already a pittance to us.

Then it is time to rest a night in a proper bed

The Middle of the Night

I awake to find the room full of some unnatural mist.

A figure forms from the mist – is this when I am awarded my mystical sword of destiny?

It seems not, she is but a failed guardian – but she gives me some useful information – to find the stag lord, I need to remove the magical mist.
It seems he is something more than just some bandit king.

Well, this is useful – I shall of course assume it is a trap.

Come the morning, I search the chests in the room – on one of them I find an owlcat that takes a liking to me – I shall call him headchomper, as eating faces is the name of the game!

There is also a fancy hat and necklace.

Come morning, Svetlana has a job for is it seems.

We can of course keep an eye of for a wedding ring.

Interesting, who is this dark haired woman to Svetlana? I make no promises on my actions.

I also ask some minor info.

The other person here is a washed up drunkard of a hero.

Her story is long and sad, but mostly hubris. She does offer to supply mercenaries for 2,000 gold.

Oleg seems to be in a good mood!

I've guessed from the magical fog this is not a normal bandit, but this is some kind of useful info.

Next I speak to Bokken, the potionmaker.

He does have a fetch quest for us. The bread and butter of a starting adventurers career.

I find Amiri practising, and she just starts telling me about her sword.

Her background is as unimaginative as you would expect from a barbarian.

She's an adventurer because her tribe did not believe in women's rights.

Jaethal has a much more interesting story.

She tells a tale of using her kin in blood magic to retain her beauty. I give her hints on how she could had done this without getting caught.

Her punishment for this crime was apparently an ironic punishment from her god, and the new role as an undead inquisitor!

She has traded pleasure for power, a good trade in my book.

You get the idea Assassins are going to be featuring prominently in our future.

Valeries story is somehow more boring than the barbarians! Rich kid becomes paladin.

Such a hard life.

At least we have two minions who are not big on critical thinking, and one who is aligned towards our goals!

Next up, we start to explore the stolen lands and try and find the source of this mist. And maybe get those goods for Bokken.

Well, good luck. That’s all I can say.

Edit- good start so far. Pro tips- if you keep leveling up, mercenaries get more expensive. Some players delay their leveling for that reason. You don’t necessarily need mercs to complete the game, but the sooner the better if you want them. Annoriel also provides retraining if you want it- 3 free character respecs and then slightly more expensive paid respecs. Be sure to check the trading post for secrets when you can, using your highest Perception person.

I found Valerie's backstory even more tedious than the usual "rich girl turns paladin". It's more, "Pretty and rich girl was tired of being pretty, joined paladins who worshipped being pretty, and so left them as well to become a fighter."

At least Amiri is a bit more rambunctious. And hits things hard enough to gib them.

Like I said earlier, Valerie is very polarizing. I found her my favorite romance in the game, above even the secret ending, slow burn appreciated. She also makes an excellent candidate for a certain strict order of warriors in one of her alternate endings. I had Pained's judgement to start out too. Valerie has to grow on a player. She's an acquired taste.

Amiri enthusiastically wants to slaughter things, knows she wants to slaughter things, and will work with us so long as we put her in a position to slaughter things.

That's definitely a useful minion!

Valerie (in my small amount of play in the game) I never did much with her story. I found her a very good front-liner (of which Kingmaker has some very nice ones, Wrath admittedly not so many) among the base companions.

Yeah, some of the class and ability choices the game gives your companions are... not ideal. Valerie's not the most egregious example of that, however. And thanks to the years of patching and tweaking the game it's no longer necessary to minmax.

I just checked and between 5 and 7 a tower shield specialist gets feats and class abilities that reduce penalties to attack, max dex bonus, and movement speed as a result of wearing heavy armor. I think the penalties from level 1-3 aren't really addressed because you're already getting a very juiced AC just from the heavy armor and the tower shield.

The Oversized property on that weapon is what gives her a penalty to attack. She comes with the Exotic Weapon Proficiency by default, which covers the sword since it's a Bastard Sword.

The thing that always gets me is why Exotic weapon proficiency is even needed for a Bastard Sword. It's just an even longer longsword.

It's the "hand and a half"-style feat tax that D&D 3.5, and therefore Pathfinder 1st ed., liked to use as a "balancing factor" for one-handed weapons with a better-than-usual damage die. These type of weapons can normally be wielded with two hands as a martial weapon; the Exotic Weapon Proficiency is needed to use these with one hand without penalty. Having not played Kingmaker or Wrath of the Righteous myself, I do not know if Owlcat programmed in the full breadth of this mechanic.

Incidentally, both Kingmaker and WotR each include one of the Pathfinder Iconics (example characters of each class) among their NPC allies. For Kingmaker, they used Amiri, the Iconic Barbarian; for WotR, they chose Seelah, the Iconic Paladin.

Lord Koth
Jan 8, 2012

Any kind of nonproficient penalties just flat out don't exist in the PC games. Either you have the proficiency and can wield the weapon, or you don't and thus can't. There's no programmed situational exception for those few weapons that fall into a one/two-handed split proficiency category either, so if you want to use a bastard sword you'll need to pick up the proper feat.

Given that, of weapon types in the game, the split proficiency only applies to bastard swords and duelling swords (and the latter's pretty much connected with an archetype + prestige class that automatically gets the proficiency anyways), it makes sense for them to have not tried to program some sort of exception in.

We set off towards Thorn Ford, let's see what the bandits are up to!

We can't go anywhere without meeting fun people.

At least this guy is not attacking us.

He is annoyingly cryptic however.

Amongst his ramblings, we do get some useful information.

We follow on Tartuccio's trail.

Two feet down the road we run into some more problems.

It's at this point I realise I seem to have somehow left the rest of the party at home!

It's fine, I have a leopard.

Right! That's better!

We make progress towards the tomb!

Let's find that slippery little gnome!

There is some good loot already!

Tatuccio is here – and like all so called masterminds, he's making everyone else do all the work. I know this is folly – If you want a job doing right, do it yourself!

We verbally spar! The fool, doesn't he realise how different we are! He's an evil purple gnome with some dastardly plan, and I'm a god sent saviour who will do anything I need to!

Harrim is easy swayed to our side.

Then he flees, leaving his minions behind.

It's murdering time.

One of them grows to giant sized, and smacks down Amari.

It doesn't help him for long.

Following Tactuccio we see a secret switch.

And a great door opens.

The room is full of traps, quickly disarmed.

We loot the room.

Now back on his trail!

We track him.

But the tral quickly goes cold.

I take the smaller trail, he did not have many minions left.

We are defeated by a cliff, and he escapes - for now!

He'll be back, so for now, it's back on the trail to the ford.

Another dream.

It seems to be pointing me in another direction.

Let's deal with this river crossing before the second one!

We have a quick nap by the river before searching for trouble.

They have trapped the approach, - this is efficient.

I find them, and try to bribe the information out of them.

Yeah, we all knew it wouldn't be that easy!

They are not much of a challenge.

While Epimetheus feeds on their corpses, we find their orders – it's always helpful when the baddies write stuff down, it's so much quicker.

We rescue the prisoner.

Hopefully, he'll be useful later.

For now we clear out the last few bandits.

We continue along the thorn river towards the hut the Stag king was so keen to see destroyed.

There we are met by the spirit of the Guardian of the Bloom.

She shows us ghostly memories of the past.

Dad believes in stern punishment's it seems.

Around the corner, the story continues, and we see the young man is now the Stag King.

He takes revenge on his father.

It seems the father is still around, and could be of some use to us.

I apparently was the only one to see that – hopefully the others did not thing me mad staring off into space for minutes at a time.

Gather evidence of crimes, got it.

There are notes hidden under a stone of a strange alter that stands opposite the burned out hut the Stag Lord was raised in.

Apparently this temple of the Elk should be on our list of priorities!

The question is, do we head straight there....

…. or head south to nettle crossing?

Review of Grey Hunter's latest update from a Chaotic Good, forgiving, dedicated fan perspective-

Nice how you showed off a mistake a player can easily make. Glad I had a Smilodon when I did what you did on my first playthrough. Unfortunate that we missed some NPC commentary on the weird old man but that's ok. Our own gameplay can fill in the gaps here. I reloaded a save once I knew there was commentary and played the "Meeting Remus" scene again a better way. :)

I agree going to the Tomb first is a good idea. You can also go to the Thorn Ford first instead- but it doesn't give you anything convenient or lasting.

"We verbally spar! The fool, doesn't he realise how different we are! He's an evil purple gnome with some dastardly plan, and I'm a god sent saviour who will do anything I need to!"

Great line!

You picked Harrim over Linzi? It's cool, if I were playing your character I'd probably do the same. At least her upcoming circumstances will give Linzi space to work on her book. That's what she needs, right?

If you do succeed at tracking Tartuccio, it doesn't change much. You just get another battle with his minions and some more experience.

A non-Good character cannot recruit Kressle. This is one thing I hate about alignment-specific options. Oh well, I don't need to be Evil and if the game allows me to be entertained by it briefly, that's ok, I guess. The game does allow us to reap what we sow, and earn an appropriate reward no matter what. That is the purpose of the power fantasy genre. And we don't ultimately need that locked option to finish the game, it's just cool.

Geez, worst father ever! And the son did end up just like him. That song "Cat's in the Cradle" should have warned the father. Oh well.

On the vote- Nettle's Crossing asap. Why? If you want to go to the Temple first, it and the area around it have important game features and plot stuff. But the nightmares will handicap you if you don't settle them by going to Nettle's Crossing. I'm cool if we avoid there, I'm just hoping we can handle the consequences of that.
