They evolved on Madagascar prior to mammals like rats and so they occupy a niche and resemble the behavior of small mammals or reptiles rather than a cockroach. They're slower, won't eat rotten food, and have a symbiotic mite species that cleans their exoskeleton. Their poops make a strong fertilizer
