She lived just down the road from me for years. Seemed like a very quiet, low-key woman any time I saw her around the town.

I just heard from my dad, who knows a lot of people in the part of rural Wicklow where Sinead moved in the last few years, that whenever she was home, she hung a sign on the gate inviting any passing neighbours in for tea and a chat. She was a painfully honest and unfiltered person, apparently extremely funny and self-aware, and swore like a sailor. All jokes aside, we could do with more people like her. Ar dheis Dé go raibh do anam, a Sinead mo siubhneas beag.

Her funeral procession just went down the seafront in Bray, passing by her old home. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kdrk0GQrfV4 It was very moving, just thousands of people, both locals and from all over the place gathered together to say goodbye and exchange stories about her When the hearse passed, the crowd all started following it, which is pretty traditional. edit: just wanted to say, that while Morrissey is right (blergh) about the media always jumping on her whenever she was having a bad time and representing her as an unstable lunatic when she pointed out cruelties and injustices baked into the system, it is not at all true to say she was not loved and appreciated when she was alive. She lived in my home town for 15 years, she raised her two youngest kids here. So many people have little stories about funny conversations they had with her, recalling times when she helped people who were struggling financially, or how she came to their open mic night and performed a few songs in front of an audience of maybe 10 people*. Most people kept these stories to themselves, or only told them to their friends, because spreading them all over social media would have felt like a betrayal of a nice, gentle, funny woman who was a part of our community. They are telling them now because that is what a wake is all about - sharing stories about the person who is gone. *https://www.independent.ie/regionals/wicklow/bray-news/the-night-sinead-oconnor-sang-amazing-grace-unannounced-in-bray/a299602299.html Pookah fucked around with this message at 19:51 on Aug 8, 2023 |

Earwicker posted:thank you so much for sharing this. Having the respect of your peers is everything. I have another strange little moment from yesterday's funeral - this pink chair was placed in the door of her old house, with her photo in front of it. I saw it and thought "I remember that chair! she used to sit out in the garden having a smoke in it" Except it wasn't the old chair, that left when she moved out. This chair simply turned up on the beach on the day of the funeral. A guy called Adrian Duggan, who lives down by the beach found it, thought it was weirdly like her old chair, and put it in the doorway. It's not a big beach, and chairs are not something that you'd normally find there. Just a silly, lovely little coincidence.

So so mad. U have no idea how mad I am right now. (I just threw a TV out the window bc someone pretended not to know Dolores O'R wasn't Sinead O'C) gently caress, I just killed Bono. Edit: Bono lived like about half a mile from me when I was a little kid back in the 1980's. He used to drive a big old banger of a merc or bmw back then. Ireland is such a weird little country. My little brother snuck out of the house when he was about 5 and cadged biscuits off Ali Hewson. Pookah fucked around with this message at 15:30 on Aug 11, 2023 |

Once you have the calves for it, a kilt is always a good choice, dudes look great in that kind of fierce, structural skirt. And yeah, I love my weird bird av, it's just a happy jackdaw sunbathing on a warm spring morning.

Pennywise the Frown posted:I had the calves but I had really high socks. Good call on the defensive underwear, people get so weird about trying to expose men in skirts. You look extremely sharp in that outfit! But where is your wee little knife that, if I remember correctly, is supposed to be either tucked into your sock/shoelaces, or stored in your sporran?

Pennywise the Frown posted:It was near Seattle so no knife! As far as I remember at least. It was a rental but the dude was decked out with everything you could want. I went with the green tartan because it was closest to the family name. Now you understand the chronic grievance women have about not getting any pockets. Women get expected to wear skirts and not even a sporran to store their stuff in.
