poo poo, i never thought of that. maybe i should try 4x32 and see if it makes a difference for daw recording/playback performance. i get some occasional lag with more than 8 tracks or so

indeed I don’t think I needed the extra 32gb but now all my 4 ram holes are filled. shitposting at the speed of space time

The microcontroller in the power supply I'm programming has 256 kbytes of RAM. This is far, far more than the power supply software requires.

Yeah, maybe I should keep this going just out of sheer stubbornness. I fully upgraded it when that processor generation (Xeon Westmere?) was retired from datacenters. So it has dual 6-core cpus and 96 gb of ram and heats the condo in the winter (and in the summer).

There was a really long gap when Apple had no computer that I wanted to buy (like the round mac pros). But the new mac studio seems good, and the Apple CPUs seem good.

the base Mac mini is faster than your space heater block of aluminum and produces no noticeable heat or sound. buy a Mac Studio and stop wasting effort trying to keep that machine out of the grave.

update: even though i didn't need the additional ram per se, filling all four slots does, in fact, improve performance

thx, yospos

common mistake of the moar cores era is that if your memory channels aren’t scaling with your core count you’re becoming increasingly memory-bound as that bandwidth is divided between them.

also your cpu has not many ram channels because it’s a consumer level cpu so it can’t really use more

Some CPUs get slower if you fill all the RAM slots, and you need to leave one empty for max performance.

sometimes you have to blow on the pins of your ram and then blow on the slot before you plug it in, otherwise when you turn on your computer the screen will just flash pink
