The commentary track for Pee-wee's Big Adventure with him and Tim Burton is a great listen. He seemed like a really sociable guy with a lot of friends. It seemed like he remembered every minor actor's name in the movie and was still in touch with a lot of them. He also hand picked Tim Burton out of obscurity and launched his career with that movie.

I remember the news about him when I was young but it coming to me through the lens of conservative talk radio my parents and teachers lived and breathe and in this extremely exaggerated way like the story was that he whipped it out in the middle of a crowded city street and started jerking off at kids or something genuinely horrible like that.
