The Life Aquatic Studio Sessions Featuring Seu Jorge will always sit in the topmost tier of movie soundtracks because it's just a whole lot of acoustic David Bowie covers in Portuguese

And from the same movie, Ping Island Lighting Strike Rescue Op by Mark Mothersbaugh is an all-time banger

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fAbvRyKVHUo

Echoing this, Seu Jorge's songs are fantastic. Also he was Knockout Ned in City of God.

I really like Rushmore's and Royal Tenenbaums's soundtracks, too.

This thread's like staring into the void.
Glory - definitely helps put you into the time period and the way the last 3 songs play out is perfect.
The first one fills you with so much hope even though historically you know the outcome and how the last choral part strengthens the huge kick to the nuts.
The last song during burial is such a downer but beautiful at the same time for what is shown on screen.
The closing credit song is my absolute favorite of all time, especially how it starts just after the burial.

The original mission impossible soundtrack introduced young me to a whole bunch of interesting music, I remember listening to this on loop for a long time.

https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1e18ScbFroKyRvtjSUz9RC?si=I8NEMMoNTcesVXjZ2QM0NQ

quote:

"Theme from Mission: Impossible" – Larry Mullen & Adam Clayton (3:27)
"Spying Glass" – Massive Attack (5:21)
"I Spy" – Pulp (5:56)
"Impossible Mission" – Danny Elfman (5:35)
"Headphones" – Bjφrk (5:40)
"Weak" – Skunk Anansie (3:31)
"On and On" – Longpigs (4:11)
"Claire" – Danny Elfman (2:55)
"Dreams" (Radio Edit) - The Cranberries (4:13)
"You, Me and World War III" ('Big' Single Remix) - Gavin Friday (4:28)
"So" – Salt (3:33)
"Trouble" – Danny Elfman (3:32)
"No Government" – Nicolette (5:31)
"Alright" – Cast (3:35)
"Mission: Impossible Theme (Mission Accomplished)" – Adam Clayton & Larry Mullen (3:05)

If nothing else, discovering Massive Attack made it worthwhile.

e: I guess I should add a disclaimer that my experiences with soundtracks are pretty limited, but if there was one that I can single out, this is it.
e2: after spending more time going through what has been shared, top tier is probably a stretch for the above. Ah well.

Were any of these songs actually IN the movie? That said, as far as "let's put some songs on a disc as a marketing tie-in for a movie'" goes, this is one of the greatest.

I also forgot to mention that the soundtrack for Saturday Night Fever is full of loving stone cold classics.

I am lucky enough to live near the mall they filmed this in. There's an annual convention and a few years ago they talked about the soundtrack and how Goblin and Romero worked on it together, with Romero specifically wanting the "Gonk" song at the end despite some protests from others.

Not even the best song off the album...the best is PROBABLY "Instruments of Destruction."

Surprised we made it to page 3 with no one saying Top Gun.
maybe it's cliched to say it? But it's a clichι for a reason, the soundtrack is full of bangers. And not just the most well known trio of "Top Gun Theme", "Dangerzone," and "Take my Breath Away." Smaller tracks like the not-remotely-at-all-homoerotic "Playing with the Boys" , and "Mighty Wings" and ""Lead Me On."
