Not only was he able to work multiple styles in multiple places at a high level he also was super open to new styles that many old wrestlers say are killing the business. He knew that Joshi in the 80's was the next wave of wrestling

Look in my eye,
what do you see?
I decided to put on "The Rise and Fall of ECW" on a whim while I was working today, and when the Funker came on I smiled and thought to myself "man, I miss Terry Funk. I wonder what he's been up to, hope he's enjoying retirement because goddamn he earned it."

Then I saw the news. Big RIP to one of the real ones, gonna miss that crazy cowboy. :smith:

Good luck with your depression!
When I was a little kid watching ECW Terry was my favorite, he was so genuine and so authentic in a way that very few people have ever achieved in the art of professional wrestling. I never once missed a chance to watch him. I even watched him on WWE after the ignoble death of ECW (which I did not like at the time) solely because he was Terry Funk and I watched Terry Funk matches. He reminded me of the guys I was growing up around, but existed in them in an idealized form. Hard, angry, rural blue collar guys that slaved away in fields and factories so they could cut loose one night a week. He did what he thought was right, he fought who he thought needed to be fought, and when he fought he did whatever he could physically do to win. Always will be one of my top guys, and the sport will Forever have been enriched by his presence, and be markedly poorer for his absence.

In celebration of the living legend and all that he accomplished, please accept the highest honor wrestling has to bestow: a highlight compilation set to generic buttrock that some guy slaved away over in his basement

One of my favourite crazy details from Funk's career - he and Dory junior trained Anton Geesink, professional wrestling's first Olympic Gold Medallist. He won gold in the open weight class for judo at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. After he retired from competitive judo, he was approached by Giant Baba, and sent to Amarillo to be trained. He was (as far as I know) pretty much the first gaijin in Japan being promoted as a top level babyface, often teaming with Baba himself.

Side note - Kurt Angle wasn't even the first Olympic Gold Medallist in WWE. That honour goes to Wim Ruska, another Dutch judoka. He won two golds at the 1972 Munich Olympics, and was brought in by Inoki so that New Japan would have its own Olympic Gold Medalist judoka. From there, he'd have a few dozen matches in the then-WWWF.

When I was a kid I was a huge Mick Foley mark - still am. And his love for Terry is what made me fall in love with Terry too. And in the years since then I have never once heard a bad story about him. In a time where eventually all of your heroes have a story attached to their name that makes you like them a little less - he stands head and shoulders above them all. Also he is still the paragon of the idea of a wrestler giving back to the business and being a forward thinker when it comes to helping the future of the business. The antithesis of Hulk Hogan basically.

A few match highlights from Japan...

June 11, 1976, Terry vs Jumbo Tsuruta, NWA title. Jumbo spent the first 6 months of his career in Texas learning the ropes from the Funks, so not only were they very familiar with each other but Terry always wanted to make him look good. Textbook old-school wrestling match.
http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?2zql2wv6rh8k6ka

December 1977, The Funk Brothers vs Abdullah the Butcher and (original) Sheik. All-time great performance from Terry that permanently endeared him to the Japanese fans. Abby and Sheik use the "hiding a weapon from the ref" tactic to maul Terry, so we get epic selling from him.
http://www.mediafire.com/?o699uw2pjoylu9n

Terry vs Stan Hansen, April 14, 1983. Bah gawd slobberknocker right here.
http://theditch.biz/TerryVsHansen4-14-83.avi

The Funk Brothers vs Hansen & Gordy, August 31, 1983. Terry's first retirement. Big heat and an emotional post-match.
http://www.mediafire.com/?1nawea3lmlywcmb

The Funk Brothers vs Choshu and Yatsu, August 31, 1985. This match is 100% about Terry being a raving maniac.
http://theditch.biz/ChoshuYatsuvsFunks8-31-85.avi

Context: the Guerreros worked in Texas for decades, so it was only natural for Terry to want to make young Eddie (who had endless potential as we see there) look good.

The context for this is that Memphis announcer/kayfabe owner Corey Maclin runs afoul of Jimmy Hart and Jerry Lawler and they kicked his rear end. This results in Maclin calling Funk for help after being challenged to a tag match at the Memphis Coliseum, and Terry has a long history with Lawler. Funk sends a promo every week leading to the show. There's an amazing one where he makes up a story about talking to a fan who wants to tell Terry who he thinks the GOAT is. I won't spoil it but it's worth watching.

The energy of the 80's AJPW crowds never ceases to amaze me. Terry was SO goddamn over in Japan, you can't help but love him and root for him as the babyface-in-peril. Meanwhile in America, he's a dirty bastard crazy son of a bitch.

i was reading tod gordons book (Tod is God lmao) and he had a funny story of Terry backstage in ecw giving some injured kid a lesson. The younger wrestler has some issue with his neck and Terry was urging him to get it looked it. The younger dude said he has no insurance so he cant pay. Terry says no problem ill teach you the rental car plan. Get a rental car and get the highest level of insurance they have this will cost you 50 bucks tops. Then immediately drive that fucker right into a stop sign and get out holding your neck.
