The pirate code is really more of a guideline, than actual rules.

It's much lower volume, but after years of doomscrolling outrage Twitter this is actually pretty nice.

it's not bad, but it's been useful to use the block/mute lists to keep the crypto dorks away. Also seems like the discourse is kinda hyperfocused on really useless, inconsequential stuff (the NYT article with the dumb anecdote about picking a pink starburst was all over my discover/for me) but maybe that's just social media lol

Not really? They're still adding improvements (that admittedly should have already been part of the site) and they added another 2 million users after opening up. The place is definitely busier than it was, and I've started seeing a couple of news agencies start to post there as well.

Sadly it's just hard to break the inertia of Twitter. People still posting there "so their stuff gets seen" even as actual engagement with said stuff drops off a cliff.

Is it really engagement when 90% of it is Nazis?

Well specifically it was someone talking about doing a kickstarter/fundraiser that they shared on Twitter, and despite "views" being way up actual people clicking through to make a pledge was down an enormous amount versus the one they had pre-Elon. This was followed by other people sharing their own anecdotes about how bad their sales/fundraisers had dried up over on Twitter.

However it still makes them *some* money, so people keep using it despite the obvious issues. Kind of like this post I saw about Tumblr today:

"Have to learn to use Glaze or Nightshade because of the Tumblr selling data to Midjourney and OpenAI news. It’s the platform with my largest audience by a MASSIVE margin and I get a lot of comm work from it, so I can’t leave yet."

Unfortunately it's also hard to make money on Bluesky; there's a smaller audience there and no algorithm shoving your work in random people's feeds. Plus needing to start over, of course.

Basically we're just looking at a long, slow decline for Twitter as long as it can generate any amount of revenue for the people whose businesses rely on social media to get them clients.

I'm still really enjoying it and I feel the people I interact with daily are turning into more meaningful connections than I had on Twitter, largely because we're either finding each other through shared interests on the Feeds or through mutuals. The Goon Feed is especially great; there's such a diversity of interests and senses of humor that it's always a good diversion.

The lack of an algorithm kind of sucks for me only in that I'm on the opposite side of the planet from a lot of you, so things that happen during the day in America are nowhere near the top of my feed when I get up for work in the morning in Asia, so I miss a lot of content if it's not being reskeeted a few hours after it's been posted.

Most people I know have accrued between 400 and 1000 followers, and those are often mutual follows, which makes it a far more successful platform by user metrics than basically any other social media platform I've seen or used. I'm still getting multiple follows a day on Bluesky even now, so the platform clearly hasn't slowed down.

I've found it much easier to accrue followers on Bluesky than any of the competitors, including Twitter. I just subscribe to feeds, follow the people who post there, and they follow me back because we have a shared interest. I already have close to a 1000 followers, while I struggled to reach 300 on Twitter.

hi how are you

I honestly don't like it much. I can't tell if it's not as much fun as twitter was when it was good, or if a break from that kind of social media cured me of the brain worms I needed to enjoy it. I like seeing cool drawings from some of the artists I follow and sometimes someone will crack a joke but it mostly just feels like hard work to get into.

Yeah. When I deleted my Twitter account it felt so great. For a week or two after, there was a compulsion to check Twitter, but I couldn't because my account was gone, so I'd just stop and go do something else instead. Eventually the compulsion just went away. It was amazing, I had so much time back in my life.

I made a blue sky account a while back, but it started to give me those same lovely compulsion feelings. So I logged out and never looked back. Social media brain worms are loving awful. Now that I'm out, I'm never going back.

I can totally get this because it's a very different vibe from Twitter. Twitter was like a thousand of the funniest people ever cracking jokes about the same insane thing and being able to respond immediately to any unexpected change in direction in some shared subconscious dialog while also being on the occasion genuinely informative about something important.

Kinda the same problem I have. It's doom and gloom constantly, people scolding others for whatever, random furry art out of nowhere, and then the same thing reskeeted (ugh) 10 times. I enjoyed it a bit at first, lotta y'all in this thread are funny, but it's not very engaging in the same ways Twitter is not engaging.

EDIT: sorry this is a useless post, you can all enjoy things I think I'm just tapping out.

It's a bit of a mixed bag. I follow about 450 people now; friends from twitter, goons, artists, and randos I met on Bluesky. So my following feed is usually a good mix of content, though it does skew heavy towards doom whenever the latest AI or anti-trans or anti-woman news breaks. My custom feeds are also pretty good when I want to focus on specific groups of posters or types of content.

The Discover feed tends to be pretty bleh though. It's usually the last feed I bother checking (if I check it at all), and only then to see whatever random fan art is coming from the japanese users.

News to me, but I guess people are still chasing those Twitter highs.

I have a toggle for the Home feed set to show me random posts from across everything I'm subscribed to, so if there's a Feed I've been neglecting it can bring interesting posts to my attention.

The politics are the politics and I try not to engage overly much, but given it's an election year and uhh the whole of the Gaza situation, it's kind of hard to avoid entirely, but that's true of most social media at this point.

The pirate code is really more of a guideline, than actual rules.

After Twitter turned into a nazi shithole run by a racist horny toddler, I scaled down my social media consumption by a lot. I used to follow 1400 people on the twots, had 1100 followers. Now i have ~140 of both of Mastodon, and about a third of that on Bsky.

I just open either app occasionally to shitpost or repost pictures of puppies, but my main source is news is just the Google News app aggregator. I can up/downvote articles or hide entire sources to tune it to my needs. Way better signal-to-noise ratio for my taste.
