I remember a couple of classes in our High School showing this movie in like 2003 or 2004 as part of some sociology or health initiative. This was in a suburban school in Michigan and was meant to be a warning or something about having sex or doing drugs I guess? The movie was rated NC-17 at the time and they were showing it to sophomore classrooms, to children who were into pokemon and strugging in Algebra 2. It was mostly confusing to me because the movie showed a guy that had sex, rocked phat jeans, smoked weed, skateboarded and drank 40s all day while listening to classic NYC 90s hip-hop tracks. Honestly it looked like the coolest poo poo ever. Turns out he has AIDS though which isn't cool, nor is unknowingly spreading it around or talking trash about virgins you banged. I'm curious if anyone else had to watch this trash as a youngster or has any insight into what people were thinking showing this in public high schools. It just seems like some administrator got wind of it, was totally out of touch, and decided that a bunch of suburban white kids needed to know the Sickening and Heartbreaking Truths of Washington Square Park in the 90s.

No, but we had a rousing game of stupid chud kids in a stupid chud state asking stupid sex questions. My personal favorite was a girl that asked, "is mountain dew a contraceptive?" The teacher stood there, dumbfounded, for a solid 10 seconds and even with how idiotic everyone was, everyone seemed in silent agreement that was the dumbest thing they have ever heard. You just know her 16 or whatever bf told her that it worked and they were just having unprotected sex. She had some back and forth that I don't recall after that but it was something about being adamant that it worked. After that we watched a video of some woman giving birth, all the guys didn't take it seriously and just made fun of how hairy the woman was. Some kid named Daniel fainted. Bunch of people seemed to never want to have kids and then were immediately pregnant that year or the next. I'll never forget you, mountain dew girl.

There was an old rumour about coca cola (diet coke?) being an effective spermicide. e - There are real scientific papers about it and the problems it posed to public health.

I never watched it. The sister of a good friend in high school had a role in it. She was an estranged, rebellious teen that had essentially ran away to live with cousins and other teens clear across the nation and somehow she managed to get cast for it. My friend watched it and didn't care for the character she played and told us not to watch it. She returned home after a few years and was actually a very cool and savvy person. She didn't like to talk about the movie; it was a tough time in her life. She used a screen name, and I barely recall what she looked like. I'd have a tough time picking her out. Maybe with an old high school yearbook.

I went to a catholic school so we watched a movie about Jesus. This was way before Mel Gibson's Jesus movie though, but definitely a Jesus movie and he got crucified. I think we ended up watching it twice. Oh yeah we also watched Terminator 2.

We had to watch this movie about a kid who stole a car to look cool in front of his friend and went to prison for it. Then in prison he got bullied and killed himself. We also had to watch the birth video and one about elephantiasis.

We also had to watch a play about how someone had a bad day and decided to huff hair spray at the end to make themselves feel better. But then they died immediately after inhaling and all the characters from earlier that made the character’s life lovely came up one by one to say how sad they are that the person died. And a movie about not taking ecstasy because you’ll die from that too. Oh and one time we got a recovering addict in who had to talk to us about how bad drugs are as part of some kind of community service. He told us that drugs are bad so we shouldn’t do them unless its weed which is safe and the staff got super angry at him for it and removed him from the classroom.

Still very stupid. Sure, but it's not like these kids knew the difference between "lowered sperm count" (completely ignoring that it's probably by 3%) and "an effective form of birth control". Very stupid indeed. They didn't even go over birth control with us beyond abstinence and condoms. I got to put a condom on a banana in a different health class, so that was fun. But you'd still be going to church the next day and hearing "abstinence only" and "no sex until marriage". And there were definitely parents still opting their kids out of sex ed all the way through highschool. I can't imagine hitting your 20's and still having no idea how cycles work or how babby are formed how are girl get pregognant, all thanks to your parents. I had a dedicated sex ed in 3rd grade, 9th grade, then just a general reproductive section in a 10th grade biology class. E: Oh god also just remembered we watched a different sex ed video about a girl that got pregnant but kept insisting it was impossible to everyone, her parents, her doctor. The reason? We never watched Kids but we did watch the aforementioned giving birth video, the Fetal Alcohol Syndrome movie with Jimmy Smits, and the turtles loving video.

One of my classmates had an older sister who went on a weekend long field trip with their biology teacher. They all decided to go to the cinema one night. The biology teacher was a devout christian, possibly one of those born again types. The film they went to see was Trainspotting. The biology teacher was traumatised and wouldn't shut up about it the rest of the weekend.

Didn’t see Kids, but my high school had the whole senior class watch Schindler’s List in the auditorium. It’s a great film of course, but kind of undercut by all of us hooting and howling every time a sex scene was on, or when they show naked people in death camp shower scenes that are meant to be horrifying but every boy there is just psyched to see some tiddy. What mostly stuck out to me was the scene of a little boy hiding in a latrine from Nazis and the guy next to me yells out “I found a chocolate bar” in a little kid voice. just lmao

I eventually got over the driving anxiety only to have a bad multi rollover wreck in my 20's, I've tried to drive as little as possible ever since. I didn't end up as red asphalt though, so that's a plus. I did however end up a goon...

Yeah, I know exactly what film you're talking about. Aside from the various rapes (quite a few instances of date rape in that movie) the other thing that stuck with me is the scene where they beat a dude to death with skateboards and shout spicy words at a gay couple. Made me feel pretty bad about being a sex haver for a while and then I got over it. I guess it's supposed to be damning social commentary but honestly, the whole thing is so loving surrealist that you could take parts of them out of context and have people thinking it's an adult swim sketch. "It smells like butter scotch, yo!"

No, but that sounds cool as poo poo, if not exactly sound from an educational standpoint. If they showed it to us, we would have spent the rest of high school singing "I have no legs, I have no legs" and drinking Kool-ade out of tampons. We did watch "Reefer Madness" when one of the stoner kids talked Coach into showing it in heath class. Also he got all the students to draw what they thought the opposite sex's genitalia looked like, which was kind of a challenge in the days before ubiquitous porn. It was surprising how many of the girls thought we had pubes growing out of our dickheads.

I watched it when I was in HS but no we didn't watch it IN HS. We didn't watch any education movies. We had speakers. One guy was a karate master and taught us to stay off drugs with his kicks and flips. Another was a bodybuilder guy with a Mr. T gimmick except he wore a giant padlock chain around his neck. He taught us to stay off drugs by powering up with sports and math. He said he was going to find Darryl Strawberry and get him off crack by whooping his rear end for the children. Anyway Kids was pretty over the top and even horrifying especially with the skateboarders murdering the dude and the party at the end. I guess the message was this is what happens when parents are out of the picture. Was a any parent even on camera during the whole movie?
