tfw you're peeing next to someone in the lineup and they don't know
it's not really anime per se but I was curious about a technique that gets used in manga if yall don't mind.

Something I've noticed consistently in manga is these kind of... what feel like super-realistic drawing styles that kinda feel like they're taking a real photo and somehow manga-fying it.

Is this something done in some kind of mangaka digital program or are they really drawing these?

The knives and the Tokyo background in these images are what I'm talking about. It's odd because the detail is always really, really good (almost always better than the quality of the usual panels), but it has this photo realistic effect like it's a procreate filter or something.

The knives might be a bad example idk but I hope you get what I mean. It's just so much more intentionally detailed than 99% of the manga in a specific way.

Hah, fair. What I have noticed though is that it's very commonly landscape. Tokyo buildings and such. Which makes me wonder if it's a conversion technique from a photo.

almost like rotoscoping but for landscapes or whatever

I don’t think those knives are an example of it but it’s not uncommon.

What confuses me about this kinda stuff is that they're all acting like children (or like... some idealized version of a child that doesn't exist in real life) but are also clearly beautiful women, which is a little jarring conceptually.

Are these woman viewed as sexy or is this like a cute thing that's not about that? I'm just curious, I enjoy a lot of Japanese music but some of this stuff legitimately confuses me about what kind of audience it's for. No judgment at all; I just have no idea what's going on here.

I enjoy a lot of the work done on First Take. I'm curious, is it really just one take, always? That's definitely not true right?

So Gege presumably sat there and drew all of that line work? I mean, that's super impressive.

It's kind of funny to compare that to the artwork he's putting out these days if so.

I watched inio asano talk about and demonstrate his creative process at TCAF a few years back, it’s an increasingly-common technique over the last twenty years to achieve the aforementioned look for backgrounds. more recently asano models scenes in unreal engine and works from there. I haven’t watched the full ep but he goes into detail on his process in this episode of manben:

ofc for the closeups sometimes an artist just wants to flex

omg I can tell that is a fantastic documentary and I am sooo watching it today thank you.

Modeling in UE is not what I was expecting at all but that is incredible!

Manga is so drat cool.

e: I'm watching it now and the line work is loving nuts!!!

kater posted:

An interesting take, thank you. I feel like it's never that simple though. I'm just trying to understand the audience  I'm sure for a lot of people it is that simple. It's probably not worth discussing, unless someone has some insight on the specifics. Carry on.

If anything the financial aspect is super interesting too, like, the infrastructure behind a huge band like that must mean that each member is getting a very small piece of the financial pie. I wonder if they're more like hired hands when the revenue has to be split so far among stage hands, management and all the different singers.

yes. it makes very specific people at metal shows incredibly mad when you chat with other people about them and therefore is cool.
