A bit late, but they're using air bearings on the rotating arm, which is why it needs air. That's what that blue sleeve is, and it should allow the arm to rotate and slide along the shaft with extremely low friction. I'm actually pretty sure it's just an off-the-shelf component. I don't know enough about record players to know if has any practical benefits, but air bearings are legitimately cool tech and a pretty elegant way to get the combined rotary/linear motion. Not worth $20k, though: the bushing costs ~$350, and the shaft probably about the same.
