I had a really good draft last year apparently. There were a lot of good value picks I had to decide on.

Sent you a PM, let me know how you want to arrange things tonight, if you still need to head out to the ferry mid-draft.

4. (49) Victor Hedman (TB - D) $42
5. (51) Jeremy Swayman (BOS - G) $42
6. (82) Cole Caufield (MTL - LW,RW) $11
7. (88) Darnell Nurse (EDM - D) $53
8. (97) Carter Hart (PHI - G) $21
9. (108) Tyler Seguin (DAL - C,RW) $16
10. (131) Boone Jenner (CBJ - C,LW) $18
11. (140) Owen Tippett (PHI - RW) $2

17. (231) Pierre-Luc Dubois (K) (LA - C,LW) $68
18. (232) Hampus Lindholm (K) (BOS - D) $2

So, my plan going in was to target one top center who can also add in other categories, as well as a clear number one goalie. John Tavares went for cheaper than I expected, so I spent more on Miller, which was okay, because he's great in this format. Missed out on a ton of goalies, and ended up getting Swayman. Couldn't follow it up with another option, so had to go with Hart again (I drafted him last year and dropped him a month or two later, stupidly). My focus then became drafting multi-positional players, and wingers who could get me a lot of FW and other categories.

The issue with my team is that I am depending on a few older guys, who I am hoping won't take big steps back this season. Of course, that will be balanced by Caufield and Tippett becoming elite.

I really wanted Seider predraft, and he went for $50. Then I entered a bidding war and spent $53 on Nurse, who I also wanted, but I prefer Seider. I also stopped bidding on Bobrovsky around $20, and should have just kept going. But, I will forget both of these things very shortly.

I had both of my drafts tonight.

First up we have the $15 league I joined.

10 teams
Scoring: G, A, +/-, PPP, SOG, BLK
W, GAA, SV, SV%, SHO
I had 1st pick.

Friends league with 4 keepers (I kept Draisatl, Tage, Samsonov and Morrisey)

10 teams, same as above plus Hits, Goals Against and Shots Against.
I had 2nd pick after keepers.

I feel pretty good about both drafts, I don't think I screwed up too much. I was in a pretty good position going into both of them.

I take comfort that I got Bob then, since you outbid me on Nurse. Haha.

On mobile, so will have to share team later, but overall pretty impressed with the team I ended up with, considering I slept through the first hour (auto picks were Rantanen and Kucherov for 190 total or something, which is… ok, I guess). My team profile is pretty old so I suspect a middling finish unless everyone magically doesn’t get injured, or I snag some unknown person on the wire that takes off. Oh well, this year’s drafts coincided with some international trip prep so I’m not too invested in outcomes.

Centers baby! Cheap keepers on goaltending let me spend a lot of money quick. With Bedard, Fantilli, and Benson this team is very high risk, high reward. Hopefully cheaping out on defense to prioritize hits and blocks (I think I spent $19 total) works out. Only picks that I really feel like I messed up on were Kuzmenko (who I dunno will even crack 30 this year) and Duchene, but they’re both cheap and probably easily replacable. I also wish I had gone for some more positionally flexible players but ultimately that’s also a minor issue. Ultimately pretty pleased with it.

I usually end up taking multiple rookies in this draft and I didn't really do that this year since it hasn't worked out all that well in the past. I really just took Poitras and at $1 if he ends up getting sent back to junior after 9 games it's not a huge deal.

As someone that usually deals with these things in JST, I sympathize. It can be fun/interesting to try to find hidden gems to have cheap keepers next year, but it can be a bit of a grind.

Also, I wish my team was a little younger...

Tried not to homer too much, only Hyman and Campbell this year. And Campbell is the third goaltender, so really no expectations there.

Yeah, hate this. At least in fantasy baseball, you have so many starters that one bad outing shouldn’t hurt that bad. But depending on how many goalies you have, you may only be getting 3-5 starts. One bad outing can ruin you.

Yeah, Samsonov has hosed me over so far, I kept him in my keeper league because Vas was gonna be out for months. I also took him in my money league draft.

But I think I recognized his suckitude in time to get some decent help off the wire, in the keeper league my goalies are Samsonov/Woll/Hart/Vanecek. I got Hart and Woll off the wire and they have been great so far (I dumped Skinner and Copley).

My money league goalies from the draft have held up a little better, I've got Ullmark/Samsonov/Thompson, and Vejmelka I grabbed off the wire to replace Skinner. I'm gonna try to stay patient with Samsonov, I'm hoping he will settle into a groove soon.

My offense in both leagues has been off to a slow start, so I'm having to climb out of the cellar just a few weeks in. I'm kicking myself for not finding room for Frank the Tank in my $ league... I grabbed him in the keeper, but I hesitated in my $ league and someone else grabbed him.

I feel like my HHL team should be doing better than it is, but such is the mystery of fantasy hockey. My skaters are about middle of the pack in each category, in terms of raw totals, although goaltending has been sunk mostly thanks to Samsonov, who I still can't give up on yet because he's a goalie for Toronto - but the actual results have me at 15th overall. Luckily it's easier to turn things around in fantasy than it is in the actual NHL. I don't have a fantasy Woodcroft to fire.

My Longstick team is horrendously bad. I guess that comes with the territory when you draft Kuemper and Markstrom.....except that Washington is at least winning lately. I'm still bad though. Just kinda middling in everything (and bad at goals) and my goaltending is horrific.

Doing much better in the Hockiest (5th) and Denis Lemieux (2nd). In the Hockiest I appear to be getting propped up heavily by my goaltending, though. I'm first in the league in powerplay points and assists but I'm middling or worse in everything else except for goalie categories which I'm dominating. And this despite Hellebuyck sucking. But the Vegas goalies are just making up for it heavily by both doing extremely well.

My Denis Lemieux team also seems to be mostly being propped up by goaltending.

I guess the lesson here for me is to just draft goalies because the one league I didn't I'm sucking in.

It's tough trying to figure out how long to be patient with guys too. In the LSL you're just hosed if you suck because the waiver there is dire but there's some guys in the Hockiest that have been very disappointing for me so far but I'm not sure yet if I want to make changes because I'm in a playoff spot and doing fine despite that. But the waiver in the HHL is pretty solid and there are good options there if I do decide to change it up.

Yeah I'm never sure of how long to hold on to guys. In HHL have Samsonov, who I plan to hold on to just because he's Toronto's goalie and he should get wins if nothing else. But I've also got Nik Ehlers and Devon Toews who have been loving awful, like ranked 467th and 452nd respectively. I could definitely get immediate waiver help for them but Toews was a top-100 player in this format last year. Ehlers might just be broken at this point, I'll probably give him another week.

LSL my whole team is kinda "meh" but the options on the waiver wire aren't great.

Fine with DLML. I haven't lost since week one there, but I'm not winning by a lot, so I'm only 7th. Swayman, Georgiev, and Shesterkin is basically guaranteed goalie wins every week, which helps a lot.

If I have learned anything in the HHL, it is to keep your goalies who get starts, unless it's like San Jose's goalies. I dropped Hart in November last year, and ended up having to juggle a lot of garbage.

I also just spent the past week and a bit with Hart out, and that waiver wire is dire.

Won my game 11-4-0 in LSL last week and...dropped in the standings. Pretty cool!

My LSL team is weird too. I've been winning even though I don't have a single skater in the top 100. In fact I only have two skaters who are even ranked in the top 200. What I do have is Oettinger and Hellebuyck, so I usually win goaltending, and then my collection of junk skaters usually win at least a handful of categories to eke things out.

I don't think I've ever been hit so hard by injuries in fantasy like I have been lately.

HHL: Charle McAvoy, Pavel Zacha, Jamie Drysdale all on IR or Out. K'Andre MIller DTD.
LSL: Kyle Connor, Trevor Zegras, Sam Girard, Kevin Korchinski, Arthur Kaliyev
DLML: Pavel Zacha again, Seth Jones, Thomas Chabot

Me and Kalensc had the funniest/dumbest trade in the Longstick. So I've got Markstrom and he notices that and I guess at some point he picked up Dustin Wolf. With Markstrom hurt, Wolf was getting some starts.

But Kalensc wasn't satisfied with Wolf or his goaltending so he reached out to me asking if I was interested in making a trade for Wolf since I already had Markstrom. So we put together the Alex Lyon for Dustin Wolf trade and it finally went through today only for Markstrom to get activated (and thus, Wolf sent down to the AHL) and Alex Lyon also got immediately hurt after Kalensc got him.

Gming is hard.

Playoffs are no big deal,
don't have a crap attack.
Other than Tom Wilson, I decided to keep 3 awful players, but have still managed to avoid disaster because I drafted well.

I ended up dropping Lindholm a few days ago, but man, Dubois and Hartman are continually on the "I am just waiting for someone better" chopping block.

In HHL, waiting for Dustin Wolf (or Spencer Knight) to be called up led to me picking up Kochetkov, so I thank Wolf for that.

I let Dubois free. Go grab him if you want him!
