I'm not gonna blame the guy, I don't know the conditions and also trying to find your way in unknown areas sucks. I will say tho that Google gave me directions to a local park but for some reason it included a stop at the local police station and instructed me to graffiti the wall and look I didn't know how to get to the park and it wasn't gonna tell me until I did it so I had to yes this is the defence I am using in court gently caress you pigs

its funny because apparently after the guy died some locals bought concrete barriers to put in front of it, shame they didnt think to do that before and lol they probably just opened themselves up to liability by taking responsibility

somewhere that private death trap road connects to a public road, and the local government should've barricaded those entrances until the bridge was fixed or blocked off privately

Google is responsible for that man's death and the "engineers" who work on google maps have blood on their hands. Google should be dissolved, their assets sold, and the proceeds used to fund road repairs.

Google removed "Do no evil" from their corporate mission statement, so they're absolved of moral thoughts, and the TOS absolves them of liability for driving off a death bridge, so I'm pretty sure they don't give a gently caress, OP

frumpykvetchbot posted:I suspect that the NC city municipality here for whatever reason is too dysfunctional to use such tools, and google simply assigns only very few people to process user submitted stuff. They probably get a bunch of noise through that channel and attempts at organized vandalism so it could be that their over-reliance on algorithmic filters didn't allow these user reports to bubble to the surface. Given what I know about Google from friends who have worked there, user-submitted map update requests are probably handled by a team of contractors who Google is trying to replace with some sort of automation within a 5-year timeframe.

Does the bridge not show up on satellite pictures? Seems like over the course of a decade someone at Google could have gotten a report of the washed out bridge, checked the satellite photos and determined that the bridge was indeed washed out, and tell Maps not to direct people over it anymore.

both google and the municipality or county share responsibility under the current legal framework, when two separate parties share responsibility for a death, neither can be held liable case closed

I can only go by the photo but it sure looks like the council didn't even put up a barrier or warning signs. In which case it's 100% on them. If they did nobody is to blame to except the driver. There should be flashing lights and reflective warning signs for 500m leading up to it.

One thing that Google Maps has done to me lately is that it will mildly freak out and tell me I'm going the wrong way. My town has changed the traffic flow in a few places, and some streets that used to be one-way are now two-way, but I guess Maps hasn't got the memo yet. The first time it happened to me I actually pulled off into a parking lot because it made me question my own perceptions.

the annoying thing google does quite often in my county is tell me to exit the interstate and then get on some lower speed limit state road that runs parallel to the interstate, and then get back on at the next on ramp that might make sense if there's an accident or congestion, but it just does it all the time for no reason. i know to ignore it now, but i bet it gets a lot of people who aren't from around here. whatever route cost optimizer they're using must have a bad metric for that stretch and i doubt it will ever be fixed i tend to use apple maps now, though, since its navigation instructions are much better

Funky See Funky Do posted:There should be flashing lights and reflective warning signs for 500m leading up to it. If you look up the location on the actual map you will see that the past tense bridge cuts across the creek from one narrow residential street to another. The whole area looks like normal speed should be 15mph. All they had to do was out up concrete blocks with reflectors at the street intersections on both ends.

Off and on service roads during rush hour. At some point I turned it off and just winged it and turned out fine. I still use google maps mostly but I’m noticing that in some cities it’s not as relevant as it is others and hoo boy that’s not fun when you factor in public transit. Either that or it can’t quite orient itself correctly and will drift a few meters. I am not sprinting by any means, keep up.

FYI property developers usually create a new legal entity for their projects that is dissolved after the development is complete. If youre building a strip mall youll just register as 123 Commercial Drive LTD or whatever. The developer builds it sells it or rents it under a different management entity and dissolves the first one. If it was a private road as part of some group title subdivison or HOA, the city probably would need written consent from the rightful owner before they could place structures. Depending on local legislation the city may not have even had a legal mechanism to pursue this. Posession being 9/10ths of the law, its actually quite difficult to build something on land you dont own. Barricading the nearest public road may have restricted local access. From a muncipal perspective, it would be like someone having an uncovered well on their land. Yes, its a hazard, but the onus is not on the city to cover up or warn you of these hazards on private land. There may have not even been a set of conditions for the development depending on age, maybe just stamped plans. In any case I feel bad for this family, but its telling that theyre going after Google. Theyve likely explored other legal options and found dead ends (whoops). I doubt it will have any consequences aside from google putting some "road conditions may vary" warning up. Unless there isnt one already. Google, as much as it tries to be, is not a 1 to 1 representation of the real world. Especially as you get outside of major cities in the US, poo poo just isnt up to date. The aerial images are dated, streetview is even worse. Its a tragic case of someone trusting their technology too much.
