it's dumb, but Panic at the Disco redid Billy Joel's We Didn't Start The Fire but with more modern poo poo. There's cute things mentioned like Iron Man and Pokemon, horrible things like Sandy Hook and Columbine, and then near the end "white rhino goes extinct."

Sorry for Lilo and Stitch here again but my niece in law got really into it the last bit of time she stayed with us and it was awesome

She’d hold one of our infants and refuse to sleep without releasing them, declaring ohana means family and family means no one gets left behind.

And she’d wake up asking if she was holding them right and not hurting them

The whole time makes me weep that the kids are alright

Lilo and Stitch did to us what people think Bambi's mom being shot did. It did not. It never has.

Mufasa's death never hit me as hard as just some of the instrumentals of Lilo.

Oh, I've got one for sure. The CDC has a PSA series called "Tips from Former Smokers." The whole series is heartbreaking and I highly recommend it. They find former smokers who are dealing with terrible health issues caused by smoking and have them share tips for current smokers. The bit is that rather than sharing tips for quitting, the subjects share tips for what people should do/expect if they don't quit. Tips like "When you get a colostomy bag, try to keep your sense of humor. You'll really need it." or "If you develop macular degeneration, try to look as far away as possible from where they stick the needle in." There are also longer spots where the subjects tell their story in more detail. Almost every star's entry (or entries) makes me cry when I watch it, but one in particular makes me cry whenever I think if it: Terrie H.

CONTENT WARNING: Stoma (hole in neck) and watching someone put a piece of medical equipment into theirs, cancer, general human suffering, death

Terrie fought a very long and hard battle with cancer as a result of smoking. She had several segments. Her first one was on the lighter side for this series, kind of a dark comedy entry. She shows what getting ready in the morning can look like for those who used to smoke: First you put your teeth in your mouth, then your wig on your head, then your hands-free device in your stoma.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5zWB4dLYChM

The next one she did was a year later, and I think about it A LOT.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EyVLKHEqTu0

quote:

TERRIE:
Make a video of yourself... before all this happens. Read a children's story, or sing a lullaby.

I wish I had...

...the only voice my grandkids ever heard is this one.

Her condition continued to deteriorate. In 2013 she came back for another spot. This time she was in a hospital bed, in visibly worse health, her head shaved for surgery. She no longer had a classic "Tips for Former Smokers" everyday life tip because she was no longer able to live her everyday life. Instead she gave a more conventional tip.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OFQ6YoDAoeY

quote:

TERRIE:
Don't start smoking.

If you do smoke, quit.

Don't give up at one try. Keep trying until you succeed.

I don't want anybody to have to go through... what I'm going through.

INFOCARD:
CANCER FROM SMOKING KILLED TERRIE.

SHE WAS 53.

Now I'm sitting here crying again. gently caress cigarettes. They've killed so many people. They killed my grandmother. gently caress the companies that make cigarettes. gently caress everyone who has ever worked for them. They can all burn in hell.

Well if you've made it this far, reward yourself with this funny one.

See, my father was a Rangers fan from the moment the Senators moved to Arlington. He was crushed when they lost in 2011. They won the World Series last night and I cried like a baby because they finally won it (in my mind) for him, even if he wasn't here to see it.

Around the same time my sister was a big fan of Better Than Ezra, and they have a song called A Lifetime from that period about a teenage girl dying in a car crash. I burst into tears every time I hear it (fortunately it never saw radio play).

Lot of songs in this thread and I can't pick one to post but here's something that happens to me a lot. Listening to a playlist or an album and it's all normal and fine, and then something that gets me comes on and I'm like, it's okay, I am doing okay now, I can listen to this one, and then I almost never manage it.

Lot of books and stories too but the one I am gonna post is The People of Sand and Slag, at least partially because it's a short story you can read for free online if you wanna: https://windupstories.com/books/pump-six-and-other-stories/people-of-sand-and-slag/
I read this one waiting in the parking lot while I was waiting for a friend I had driven to a job interview. I wasn't expecting it to be heavy, all I knew going in was that it was supposed to be good sci-fi recommended by a friend. He never asked why my eyes were red after he got back out but it was an awkward drive back. Came home and pet my cat for like six hours.

A kpop/jpop superstar took his own life and his fellow members performed a huge (already planned) two night concert just 2 months later at the request of his mother. They ended the 3+ hour show each night with the last song the member wrote and recorded with them in one of the most powerful performances I've ever seen of. The empty mic and spotlight for him, his voice playing, and 50,000 people in stunned silence as the members slowly break down throughout the song, it's a lot. The entire concert is worth watching for the strength these guys have, but this song really encapsulates so much of human love, loss, and what art and music can do to convey that all.

The song is in Japanese, and while it reads like a love song, the lyrics are much more poignant and powerful given the context.

Been more emotional lately. Teared up a bit listening to Perfect by Rob Cantor, a song about being loved despite being flawed and not being of service.

quote:

If you took a boat to the middle of sea
And spent all my money seeking treasures for me
But came up empty-handed every week after week

I’d tell you that your love is still cheap
That you are worth the trouble to keep

So don’t be sad or scared at all
Even when you can’t recall
You’re perfect in the way that you are

Pixar movies are cheating but recently I rewatched Inside Out because I kept tearing up randomly thinking about the part at the end. If you haven't seen it don't spoil it for yourself, just watch the movie.

The part where Riley 1) allowed herself to feel the sadness she had been pushing down since they arrived in San Francisco, 2) began the process of mourning the life she had left behind, 3) constantly felt the need to apologize for her feelings and her lack of positivity to her parents as she expressed herself, and 4) was validated in her feelings by her parents who supported her and affirmed the sadness she was feeling, all while 5) Sadness and Joy in Riley's mind headquarters went through with this process despite none of them really wanting to or knowing exactly what they were doing because they knew it was what Riley needed. It really spoke to me. If you have ever been made to feel like you are not allowed to feel or express negative emotion because the people you care about are relying on your positivity, if you have ever been made to feel like asking for support would make you a burden, you really should give it a watch. I also cried because of Bing Bong, obviously, but also the preceding scene when Joy actually feels sadness for the first time and then comes to understand the value of the feeling.

Bao, a short, is also really good and emotional.

on rewatch, it's clear especially in class when Riley is forcing herself not to be sad, but still getting teary, none of the kids look anything but concerned. even the popular "makeup" girl looks worried for her.

kinda the opposite, but we're goons, we probably all know Transformers, right? And we know Shockwave, the faceless emotionless loving monster Decepticon. But he wasn't always like that. In IDW comics turns out Senator Shockwave was super charismatic, always looked out for the little guys, and while he had ambition and was a scientist, he also was intent on knocking down the tyrannical Council who essentially kept Cybertron in caste slavery. Started an institute that doubled as a hiding place for people the Council wanted killed similar to Professor Xavier. Protested against a lot of the insanity from the Council. Oh, and he changed his paint colors every few days because he was a bit vain. But overall a great dude.

And the Council found out about him sheltering bots they wanted dead. So they burned his school with most of the students inside, killed the rest, and the lovely Senator faced empurata: removal of his hands and head to become the purple bot we know. But that wasn't enough punishment, so they also clipped out his emotions and pretty much mind-raped him into becoming an emotionless husk. Dude was essentially a more flashy Optimus Prime and ended up a monster because he kept trying to do good and save people.

A story from today instead of a link.

Came home from work to my roommate crying reading a letter in our kitchen. His mom snuck a letter into a box of things she was getting rid of as she moves out of her city apartment. It was a love letter his dad wrote to her a year after he was born that'd he never seen. His dad died when he was 16, and he hasn't seen his dad's handwriting since. We ended up holding each other sobbing.

This is an amazing thread. I never thought I'd have tears streaming down my face from a miso soup ad, but here we are.

Anyway, for my part: Celeste made me cry. I've dealt with (and still working on) mental illness, and found it incredibly touching and relatable. I remember discussing with a very dear friend the bit about Madeline having an alter ego, a metaphor for an internal voice, who bullies the gently caress out of her. And how my friend hasn't had that experience, while I thought it was normal and have had it all my life.

I crird at the part where someone asked Madeline how she deals with her depression, and she replied "I get drunk and get mad at people on the internet". Because I did exactly the same thing.

Apart from me being cis and not a mountain climber, I see a lot of myself in Madeline
