Fun Shoe
Darkness falls across the land , The midnight hour is close at hand
Creatures crawl in search of blood, To terrorize y'all's neighbourhood,
And whosoever shall be found, Without the soul for getting down
Must stand and face the hounds of hell, And rot inside a corpse's shell
The foulest stench is in the air, The funk of 40,000 years
And grizzy ghouls from every tomb, Are closing in to seal your doom
And though you fight to stay alive, Your body starts to shiver
For no mere mortal can resist, The evil of the thriller.

:spooky::spooky::spooky:WELCOME TO THE 2023 OCTOBER CHALLENGE!:spooky::spooky::spooky:

First, I’d like to convey to everyone that they should probably bookmark this thread, because this is the season where spooky and unexpected things can and will happen. I’m unable to say any more, but again, it’s a good idea to bookmark the thread.

Secondly, I want to thank Franchescanado for running this thread for so many years. I think it’s safe to say that we wouldn’t still be doing this if Fran hadn’t put in all the time that he did to keep it going even though I’m sure there were times where he would’ve loved to take a year off. Fran is a spookadoodle Legend!

We've also got a really good seasonal MoTM thread, featuring The Exorcist and Noroi: The Curse. Both of these movies will count for completion of challenges here too!

October MoTM: https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=4043109

With that said, let’s get the party started!

THE CHALLENGE

The “traditional” October Challenge is to watch 31 movies in 31 days and post short(or as long as you want) write-ups about the movies you watch. 31 movies is what’s required to qualify for some pretty weak prizes, but it’s by no means required to participate in this thread! Watch as many or as few horror flicks as you want to, post about them here, and have fun reading the thoughts of other posters. That’s what the thread is all about, so don’t get too caught up in completing challenges or making it to a specific number if it’s going to ruin your spooky season fun. This is a thread for celebrating the Halloween season with some great horror films, not just completing challenges!

BONUS CHALLENGES

We will have some optional bonus challenges posted below. These are also meant to be a fun extra challenge but again, feel free to ignore them if you prefer to set your own personal goals/challenges or if you just want to have a laid-back month where you watch whatever the hell you want. Completing the challenges will however get you an extra entry when it comes time to do a drawing for the fabulous prizes we have in store.

But seriously, I wouldn’t get overly excited about the prizes. If you want to know what they are, it’s horror movie digital codes. I will post a list of the codes that are available, and each winner(drawn randomly at the end of the month)gets to decide their movie of choice until the codes are gone.

The bottom line to all of this is that it’s a fun way to share our love of horror, not a competition. Let’s make sure we keep that in mind!

WHAT COUNTS FOR THE CHALLENGE??

-Horror Movies(this includes all flavors of horror including horror/comedy, family friendly films, musicals, etc.)
-Thrillers
-Documentaries related to horror and/or Halloween

WHAT DOESN’T COUNT??

We’re going to take our cue from Franchescanado on this one, and the rules for what doesn’t qualify for the challenge are the same as previous years.

-No T.V. Shows or Mini-Series(unless they’re for a specific bonus challenge, i.e. the Samhain Challenge)
-No Horror Anthology Series episodes(Masters of Horror, Tales From the Crypt, etc)
-No MST3k episodes because they don’t show the complete film
-No pornography

The last thing I’d like to note is a change from previous years, which is that rewatches are allowed when completing the bonus challenges. Unless otherwise noted(there are a few challenges that don’t allow rewatches), if you want to rewatch one of your favorites in order to complete a challenge, have at it. On the other hand, if you want to stick to only new-to-you films, more power to you. The challenge officially begins now and will continue until noon on November 1st.

Let the games begin!

INDIVIDUAL BONUS CHALLENGES(13 TOTAL)

For these individual challenges each film can only be counted for completion of one individual challenge. No killing two birds with one stone for the individual challenges.

:spooky:CineD HORROR THREAD POLL CHALLENGE:spooky:

Watch a movie that appears on either of these two lists:

https://letterboxd.com/goatgonzo/list/i-have-to-return-some-videotapes-sa-horror/

https://letterboxd.com/goatgonzo/list/you-will-not-leave-this-house-alive-sa-horror/

A while back the CineD horror thread did a big poll of everyone’s favorite horror movies of the late 20th and 21st century. The results are a great reference guide to some of the best horror of all time and a perfect way to start spooky season. Hard to go wrong with these lists(thank you to STAC Goat for compiling the lists). In bingo terms this is almost like the Free Space, it shouldn't be hard to find something you want to watch on these lists.

STAC Goat also puts a lot of time and effort into a tournament style thread where we watch horror movies and vote on them. You can complete this challenge by watching one of the movies featured in that thread as well(list below).

https://letterboxd.com/goatgonzo/list/spook-a-doodle-bracketology-tournament-movie-4/page/2/

:spooky:FREDDY VS. JASON 20TH ANNIVERSERY CHALLENGE:spooky:

Watch a movie from the Nightmare on Elm Street/Friday the 13th series OR watch another “Monster Mash” movie(A Monster Mash is when two or more famous/iconic monsters appear in the same movie).

A legendary battle of the titans took place 20 years ago with the massively anticipated Freddy vs. Jason. 20 years go by in the blink of an eye don’t they?!?

:spooky:PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK…..IN SPACE!!!:spooky:

Watch a period piece OR watch a movie that takes place in the future(as of when the movie was made).

The present day is boring. The past and the future is where the good stuff is. Feel free to ask for an official ruling if you’re not sure whether a particular movie qualifies or not.

:spooky:BIRTH OF HORROR:spooky:

Watch a movie that was shot in and/or set in your place of birth OR watch a movie that was made the year you were born

FYI, for this challenge the definition of “place of birth” will be very loose so if you want to use your birth city, state, or even a general region nobody’s gonna bother you about it.

:spooky:ROB ZOMBIE 20TH ANNIVERSARY CHALLENGE:spooky:

Watch a Rob Zombie movie OR watch a zombie movie.

20 years ago the horror landscape was forever changed with the release of Rob Zombie’s House of 1000 Corpses. Are you someone who has bad taste and as a result hates Rob Zombie? Fine, go ahead and watch any zombie movie of your choosing.

:spooky:”THAT GUY” CHALLENGE FEATURING DICK MILLER AND KEITH DAVID :spooky:

Watch a movie in which “that guy” character actor Dick Miller OR Keith David appear. Partially inspired by the documentary That Guy Dick Miller(https://letterboxd.com/film/that-guy-dick-miller/), which of course would count for this challenge as well. Reminder that thrillers DO qualify.

Character actors are always underrated and often completely forgotten. As horror fans we appreciate the characters these blue collar actors create, so let’s celebrate two of them this year.

Suggested by horror thread poster Crescent Wrench!

:spooky:THE EXORCIST 50TH ANNIVERSERY CHALLENGE:spooky:

Watch The Exorcist OR watch a movie that involves The Devil, demons, or demonic possession.

We’ve certainly done a “demonic possession” challenge in years past but hey, 50 years is a momentous anniversary. The Exorcist was a game-changer so let’s make a special point of recognizing it.

:spooky:HORROR ADJACENT:spooky:

Watch a thriller OR a horror/comedy OR a horror/musical OR a horror/action movie OR a horror/scifi movie.

The horror genre is a pretty big umbrella. Take a step outside of traditional horror and watch one of those horror hybrids that mixes horror with elements from other genres.

:spooky:WHEN ANIMALS OF UNUSUAL SIZE ATTACK!:spooky:

Watch a movie featuring deadly, oversized animals OR watch a movie featuring deadly(they have to be deadly!) swarms of very small, tiny animals

Who cares about normal, average sized animals? We want giant animals or deadly swarms, nothing in between! This challenge was suggested by horror thread poster Baron von Eevl!

:spooky:BACK OF THE VIDEO STORE CHALLENGE:spooky:

Watch a movie that you choose based only on it’s rad looking video/DVD box art, OR watch a movie that has less than 10 reviews on Letterboxd

This challenge is about those times when we wandered around the video store and ended up choosing something completely random just because it looked cool, from some out of the way corner shelf that’s collecting dust. Let’s roll the dice! No rewatches allowed for this challenge.

This challenge was jointly suggested by horror thread posters Xiahou Dun and feedmyleg!

:spooky:CHILDHOOD TRAUMA :spooky:

Rewatch a movie that scared you as a kid but that you haven’t seen in at least 10 years(the longer the better). If you didn’t watch any horror movies as a kid, rewatch one of the first movies that hooked you on the horror genre. This is only challenge that actually requires a rewatch.

The best horror movie experiences often come from childhood or our teenage years. For me, revisiting one of those formative horror films from my past is always a great time.

Suggested by horror thread poster Gripweed!

:spooky:BITE-SIZED HORROR:spooky:

Watch a horror anthology film OR watch 60+ minutes of horror shorts.

Horror anthologies and shorts can be a lot of fun because the format forces them to keep things simple and if you’re not feeling it with the current story then you’re probably about 10 minutes away from a brand new one anyway!

:spooky:THE SAMHAIN CHALLENGE:spooky:

Watch a movie set(or partially set) on Halloween OR watch 60+ minutes of Halloween Specials or Halloween themed T.V. episodes.

Halloween is the best time of year and the a lot of the best horror movies are set on Halloween. This one's a no-brainer!

GENERAL/META BONUS CHALLENGES(18 TOTAL)

Credit goes to gey muckle mowser, these overarching challenges were a fun addition to the May Challenge this year so we’re adding them to October. 18 may sound like a lot at first, but unlike the individual challenges, these meta challenges CAN overlap with any other challenge(including other meta challenges).

For example, if you watch a Japanese movie that you’ve never seen before from the 1980s that has demons in it, bam you’ve just completed 4 different challenges! These are more general challenges intended to maybe push you a little bit outside your comfort zone but keep in mind with a little strategizing you can knock these out pretty quickly.

:spooky: NEW-TO-YOU:spooky:

Watch 6 movies that you have never seen before. This is the only challenge where rewatches are NOT allowed.

:spooky:HISTORY LESSON:spooky:

Watch a movie from 5 different decades.

:spooky:AROUND THE WORLD:spooky:

Watch a movie from 4 different continents, excluding North America.

:spooky:HORROR IS FOR EVERYONE:spooky:

Watch one movie for each of the following 3 categories:

- A film by an LGBTQ+ director, or a film that deals with LGBTQ+ themes
- A film by a black director, or a film that deals with themes related to POC.
- A film directed by a woman, or a film with feminist themes

:spooky:SPOOKY BINGO CARDS:spooky:

Shrecknet was nice enough to whip up some randomly generated bingo cards based on the challenges. If you want to, feel free to use one of these. We'll give anyone who completes a line and gets a bingo an entry into the prize drawing, even if they didn't necessarily complete every challenge or watch 31 movies.

I know I already started my bingo card but I have a question about the numbers in parathesis for some of the challenges.

I assume that (x2) means you have to complete it twice (if I'm wrong please tell me) but it's the (2) and (3) behind some of them that is confusing me. For "History Lesson" it says to watch movies from 5 different decades but I'm thinking (2) means you only have to watch them from 2. Again, if I'm wrong please correct me.

Yea you have to complete the challenge that many times to complete that square. For History Lesson it's a combined 5, there are two different squares for it.

The challenges weren't really designed with a bingo card in mind, which is why some of it is a bit awkward, but this is just an alternate way to visualize the challenges if you want to use it. If you want to you can just complete the challenges one by one and forget the bingo card.

I kicked off my month with two very different but equally comfortable rewatches.

Child's Play

This is one of those endlessly rewatchable films for me. Every 10 minutes or so there's a classic scene, especially once Chucky starts revealing himself. It starts relatively slowly, but when things escalate they really don't slow down again from there until Chucky is a headless burnt-out husk with a hole in his heart.

I do prefer Child's Play 2 overall just for style and tone, but the first two Child's Play films are typically as far as I go with the series, at least on a yearly basis. It's a shame that Catherine Hicks didn't return for any sequels, although I guess it probably was a good decision for her career because I'm not sure if she gets that 7th Heaven gig if she'd been known as the mom from the Child's Play movies.

The Curse of Frankenstein

I basically watch this movie for Frankenstein's lab. I think it's the best mad scientist lab ever.

The main draw of the series overall is Cushing's Frankenstein, and he's pretty much fully formed here in the first film BUT I will say that I like some of the plots in the sequels better. Frankenstein Created Woman for example. Cushing's Frankenstein is a tremendous prick, the fun of the series is seeing just how much of a prick he can really be given the right circumstances.

One side benefit of running the challenge is that I don't have to bother tracking my own challenges, so that's nice.

A point of clarification, when completing the main 13 individual challenges, you can't double up. Each challenge must be completed by one individual film, so you can't complete the Rob Zombie and Horror Adjacent challenge with the same film.

The more general/meta challenges on the other hand are open to combinations, so with Superbeasto you can do Rob Zombie Challenge+New To You because New To You is one of that second list of general challenges.

Fright Night

I like to watch Fright Night around the same time as Child's Play for the Tom Holland and Chris Sarandon connection. It's interesting to me that Fright Night was Holland's directing debut. Aside from just being an amazing accomplishment for a debut, Fright Night feels like a more technically sound, better made film than Child's Play, which he made a few years later. Not quite sure why that is, maybe Holland had more of a natural affinity for the classic Universal Monsters aesthetic and so he was more self-assured and confident.

It's a movie that on the one had I really wish I'd seen as a kid because it would've been a yearly favorite. On the other hand, because I only saw it for the first time a few years ago it still feels like a new discovery and it instantly became a fixture of my October list.

I really appreciate how much stuff Fright Night packs into the final act. It does take it's time to get going, which is totally fine because it leans on the charisma and presence of Sarandon, who dominates every scene he's in. But that last act has everything we're looking for in a fun 80s horror movie. It has some fantastic special effects scenes and some glorious goop. Highly recommended.

The Meg 2: The Trench

Well I needed the animal attack movie and hey, a nice coincidence that The Meg 2 popped up on HBO this week.

It's......not great. They clearly decided to use Statham's action talents more, and create more of a mashup of genres where there are a lot of pretty straightforward action scenes mixed in with the creatures. That's not automatically a bad thing but the plot and characters did nothing to make me care about the action and I was left just looking at the clock wondering when the next shark/creature scene would happen. In the end they do give you at least a taste of what you've been waiting for with the Megalodon shark, a proper Meg rampage. But it's pretty short and then there's also a lot of focus on other creatures that for me were more miss than hit.

It's watchable nonsense, but only because of about 20 minutes combined of various creature scenes and then Statham barely carrying you through the rest on the strength of his action persona.

My goal with the challenges was a sort of one-size-fits-all situation where you could definitely crank them out pretty quickly or spread them out across the whole month depending on each person's preference/schedule. Making it so that people could theoretically complete them all early and then still have a solid chunk of the month left to watch whatever they want was the idea, so far I think it looks like it was a pretty good balance.

same, I don't know when I'm gonna find the time. I've barely scratched the surface of Baldur's Gate 3 as it is. Is it wrong to call in sick to work just to watch horror movies?

Usually when non-horror stuff comes up in October I just push it to November and then I have a whole bunch of good stuff waiting for me when October ends. Helps with the post-Halloween depression.

The Revenge of Frankenstein

Once I get going with Cushing's Frankenstein it's tough to stop, he's just so fun to watch. This is the first sequel, made only a year after The Curse of Frankenstein. The added fun element here is that now the Baron has officially been declared dead and is in "hiding" as a physician in a small town. He seems uninterested in anything beyond the most basic efforts to conceal his identity, and is going by the name "Victor Stine", so of course someone recognizes him and calls him out. The rest of the movie is a cat and mouse game where Frankenstein has to juggle his experiments with the need to occasionally side-step efforts to expose his identity, but he never really has to try all that hard. Cushing plays him as so totally above it all, and it's an endlessly entertaining quality. There easily could've been 15 of these movies and I would've happily watched them all.

Poltergeist

I'm proud of myself with this one because I bought Poltergeist on blu ray like 8 months ago and exercised extreme willpower in not watching it until now. It's an almost yearly watch for me, I just love the combination of those classic Spielbergian ILM effects with the horror imagery. Whatever you want to say about how much credit Tobe Hooper deserves for the film, I don't think you can argue that this is the movie we would've gotten if Hooper wasn't involved. I find it hard to believe that if Spielberg directs the movie we get the guy peeling his face off in front of the mirror, or Jo Beth Williams taking a late night swim with some rotting corpses. I think it's undeniable that Hooper's presence is still felt in the movie, regardless of how much control he gave over to Spielberg.

Watching this also gave me a good idea for a future "That Guy" Challenge: James Karen.

I definitely feel like we should expand the "that guy" category next year though. Off the top of my head you could add Tom Atkins, John Saxon, James Karen, and Cameron Mitchell.

The idea with That Guy was that each year(assuming I keep doing this or whoever does it wants to continue using That Guy) would feature two new people. Or maybe three, if we feel like two is too limiting. But I didn't want to throw out a whole list of people, I wanted Dick Miller and Keith David to have the spotlight this year and then in future years we move on to others.

Obviously I thought about actresses as well, but I had a hard time coming up with actresses who were in a bunch of horror movies but who also weren't legitimate Scream Queen icons. Like, Jamie Lee Curtis and Barbara Crampton and Linnea Quigley aren't under the radar character actors in the same way that a Dick Miller is. With a little more time to think it over I'm sure we could come up with some actress options though.

Cameron Mitchell is a good one though, I wouldn't have thought of him.

The annoying part is that Phantasm 2 has historically been the toughest one to see, due to rights issues. Lots of situations over the years where a streaming service had the rights to all of them except 2. Right now a bunch of them are free on Amazon Video but 2 is still a paid rental.

My main issue with the later Phantasm sequels is just that so much time has gone by and now you're into that 90s Direct-to-Video aesthetic as opposed to Phantasm 1 which was 79 and Phantasm 2 which was 88. There's a cheap quality to Phantasm 3 and 4 that isn't as charming as the first two. And then Ravager of course wasn't made until 2016 so you're really really far away from the original look that Phantasm had back in 79.

Anyway based on this conversation I think I'll go ahead and pull out my Phantasm Remastered blu ray tonight. The mood has struck me.

Edit: Dumb question for Basebf555, but you said Godzilla/kaiju films could count for the Freddy vs Jason challenge, right? Trying to keep my options open for that one.

Yes, but obviously it has to be Godzilla vs. another monster, can't just be Godzilla on his own.

I been watching more than a movie a day, can I still post? Got a few backed up.

Post away. You can do some specific stuff(see the OP) to get a chance at a free horror movie digital code but that's totally optional.

Do Treehouse of Horror episodes, being an anthology of three shorts, count towards the Bite-Sized Horror challenge? Or is it standalone horror shorts only?

I'll allow it. Treehouse of Horror are in a weird middle ground where they're Halloween themed t.v. episodes(which qualifies them for the Samhain Challenge) AND also little mini anthologies in their own right(which qualifies them for Bite Sized Horror). Didn't really think about that to be honest, so I guess we'll just let it slide!

The Pope's Exorcist

I feel like my opinion on this movie could be different depending on if I'm in a glass-half-full or glass-half-empty mood. Because it easily could've been completely terrible and not worth anybody's time at all. Crowe's character does elevate it into something that is pretty consistently entertaining, and I don't mean I was having a good time laughing at his accent. The character is well written and he actually does do a good job of breathing life into a lot of these scenes that we've seen a hundred times before in one form or another.

On the other hand the movie also could've been legitimately great, but it definitely does fall short of that. In the end it's a fairly standard plot that any horror fan has seen better versions of and there aren't a whole lot of surprises in store. That said, I wouldn't mind watching Father Amorth take on a few more demons with the help of that handy map, and hopefully in any further sequels they will have confidence to let things get even wilder and crazier.

Prince of Darkness

I'd been itching to get into some Carpenter anyway and when it comes to "whoops we unearthed the Ultimate Evil" stories Prince of Darkness is one of the best. Carpenter gives it a pretty unique twist by combining it with the modern quantum mechanics and time travel elements, so there aren't a lot of movies out there like this.

Holding the movie back is the two leads who have almost no chemistry at all, but it's filled out with some classic Carpenter players like Victor Wong, Donald Pleasence, Dennis Dun, and Peter Jason. So really by the second act we're talking about an ensemble and there are enough charismatic actors involved to carry the movie just fine. It also has what for me is one of the more terrifying outcomes for any movie protagonist I can think of, which is a shot that has really stuck with me all these years and I've even posted several times before in various threads because it's one of my favorites in all of horror:
