1. Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948)

Watched On: Amazon Prime Video
:spooky: Freddy VS. Jason 20th Anniversary Challenge :spooky:

Honestly I was having a ton of trouble picking out my first movie, but as soon as I saw this poster on Amazon I was taken right back to sitting cross legged in the living room in the early 00s watching AMC. Allegedly this movie was made a bit against the two lead’s wishes since they thought the script sucked and it seems Bud and Lou themselves had a rocky relationship, which is a bit of bummer. Bela Lugosi and Glenn Strange were said to have a good time though! The plot of this movie is great, Dracula and Frankenstein are being shipped to Florida, Larry Talbot tries to call and warn Bud and Lou about this but whoopsie it’s a full moon and he turns into the Wolf Man before he can get the warning out! Horror and comedy ensue. I thought this was going to be a corny time compared to my memories but I’ll hand it to Bud and Lou, they’re still pretty drat funny 75 years on. Dracula’s plot is kind of weird, he wants to improve The Monster by putting Lou Costello’s brain in it for… reasons? Ah screw it, it’s still a good time and none of that matters. There’s also a great cameo at the end that I won’t spoil for those that haven’t seen it.

2. Beast of the Yellow Night (1971)

Watched On: Tubi
:spooky: The Exorcist 50th Anniversary Challenge :spooky:
:spooky: New to You (1) :spooky:

Well I’ve certainly never seen this before. I also didn’t expect it to straight up have Satan in it, a take on Satan that is pretty dope honestly, the actor they got was really good. A soldier near the end of WW2 makes a deal with Satan to stay alive but do his evil bidding by possessing others and corrupting those around them. This movie really feels like John Saxon should have been in it somewhere, would have certainly improved things. Movie takes a bit of a weird turn when our… protagonist? Starts turning into a drat werewolf and ripping people up outside a gothic church like a Hammer Film. Thought the shot of the church was pretty cool looking

This ended up being kind of a combo of Frankenstein/The Wolf Man with a little Satan splashed in. It has it’s moments when the monster or Satan is on screen but things kind of drag towards the middle, the movie could have used maybe a smidge more action.

3. Curse of Mardi Gras (2002)

Watched On: Amazon
:spooky: Birth of Horror :spooky:
:spooky: New to You (2) :spooky:

This movie also appears to be known as “Voodoo Tailz”. From jump, someone was inspired by Texas Chainsaw Massacre, there’s a bad opening crawl that might as well be lifted straight from the first movie and that’s exactly where those comparisons are gonna end. I also have my doubts this is going to treat Voodoo in any kind of respectful way, just a hunch.

I’m not gonna beat around the bush, this is some straight up trash and amateur on every level but I didn’t think it would be anything else. They stretch the run time heavily with b-roll and montages and I highly doubt they had permits for anything. If you told me this was a porno with all the sex cut out I’d believe it. Not a soul on this production was from the area either, this was made by people who had only ever read about Carnival or watched the Mardi Gras editions of Cops. These characters are in the French Quarter on what’s supposed to be Fat Tuesday and there isn’t a soul on the streets in a lot of scenes. Time is also totally meaningless through the movie, it becomes night and day as the needs of the “plot” require.

This movie absolutely sucked and I came really close to turning it off nothing scary happens for nearly the entire runtime, there wasn't even an attempt to make a real movie here. I felt like I was watching the movie they were trying to make in Hatchet, just no one had the decency to chop these people up with an axe before they could finish it.

4. Tales from the Hood (1995)

Watched On: DVD
:spooky: Bite Sized Horror :spooky:
:spooky: Horror is for Everyone (1) :spooky:

A favorite of mine since I saw it around the time of release. As a kid I was basically ignorant of the wider themes of this movie, it was just a really awesome anthology film. Now that I’m older the messages here are sadly just as relevant. Police brutality, white supremacy, passed down domestic abuse, and senseless violence against fellow man are all on display but somehow the movie still threads the needle of being fun in dealing with these very heavy topics. I’ll also call out the wrap around segment of the movie for being pretty good, it’s fun and the sets are nice looking throughout. For anyone reading that’s never seen Tales From the Hood, I’ll say please go out of your way for it. This movie deserves a lot of love.

5. Friday the 13th Part 3(-D) (1982)

Watched On: Blu Ray

I ended up in a mood for a spectacle and a 3D movie seems like a winner. Not even close to my favorite Friday movie but it’s competent and at least significant in giving us the iconic hockey mask Jason. I wish I had more to say but I found this movie pretty boring outside the 3D gimmick and some of Jason’s kills, it’s kind of the generic Friday the 13th film. Go check it out if you’ve got the glasses on hand but otherwise it’s totally skippable on your way to Part 4. I will say, I bet this was a really great time when it actually released. I can only imagine seeing this in theaters back in 1982.

6. Friday the 13th Part 4: The Final Chapter (1983)

Watched On: Blu Ray

Well ok I can’t stop right before one of the best Friday films when I’ve already got the Blu Ray right here. I’m its been pointed out before but this Friday movie has the most eerie shot of them all for my money. You get the cleanup of the aftermath of Part III and then the emergency vehicles leave and the camp returns to the pitch black calm. Chills me right down. This entry does something really important, it gives you some build for the victims so you can care about and root for them while still satisfying that grindhouse drive-in film need for sex appeal and comedy. Savini is also a superstar for the movie, the effects are so good and he really puts his back in to it since he’s under the impression this is it for the franchise. My hot take here is that this movie has the best Jason. Kane Hodder just breathes heavy and walks around like he’s carrying suit cases, Ted White’s Jason feels like he fuckin’ hates these kids and is a force of nature. Ted White understood the assignment.

7. Revenge of the Creature (1955)

Watched On: DVD
I had memories of liking this one on MST3K back in the day and figured I’d see how it held up on its own. I dug it! The scenes with the creature under water are so impressive since there’s actually someone in there doing the thing. It’s of course not as good as the original but for everything its lacking this movie looks great.

8. Historia de lo Oculto (2020)

Watched On: Tubi
:spooky: New To You (3) :spooky:
:spooky: Around the World (1) :spooky:

I think someone in the horror discussion thread brought this one up and drat if the premise didn’t instantly grab my attention. Once this movie gets into the meat of its plot I was hooked the whole time. I don’t want to say much about the plot in case anyone wants to go in blind and I think it’s a better time if you know as little as possible. In some ways this felt like a throwback to a kind of movie no one really makes throwbacks to anymore? Those weird supernatural/occult horror movies of the 70s that there seem to be a ton of, though in contrast to those this movie is tight and doesn’t wear out its welcome like a lot of those tend to (But I love them anyway).

A serious thank you to the Goon I cannot recall right now that brought this to my attention.

:spooky: Back of the Video Store Challenge :spooky:

I don’t know a drat thing about this movie but the cover on Tubi looks insanely cool so here we go!
Wow this is bonkers. Mutant psycho killers come from… somewhere to terrorize San Francisco and start by butchering a bunch of partying teens. As an aside, two of the characters in this movie have Nostromo hats from Aliens and I’m very jealous of those. This movie was a whole vibe and a lot of fun, there’s a variety of mutants to look at, a few pretty gnarly effects, cool Carpenter-esque electronic music, and some neat set pieces. At times it reminded me of a Hellraiser movie crossed with Home Alone? Maybe just the varied appearances of the monsters is why I'm thinking Hellraiser.

10. The Burning (1981)

Watched On: Blu Ray

A true underrated banger. Seems like outside of the spookadoodle hounds like us The Burning still kind of remains unknown. I think it stands up better than a chunk of the Friday the 13th movies.

11. Van Helsing (2004)

Watched On: Prime Video
:spooky: New to You (5) :spooky:

It dawned on me that in spite of being familiar with this movie’s reputation for being bad I’d never actually seen it myself outside of clips here and there. An action/adventure movie with a more badass Van Helsing is a cool idea if you ask me, it never really comes together on the screen though. I think one big thing I’d change is there are just too many monsters, they should have narrowed their focus a little more. That also might have helped with this movie being 131 drat minutes, gotta chop that down. Hugh Jackman also kinda sucks in this, I know they probably cast him just because he had to be a wolf man for a little and Wolverine was hot at the time but he’s very flat here. Dracula is also a dud. I also have to point out a little detail, the writer/director must have been into White Wolf games at the time, because Werewolf Jackman straight up sharpens his claws in the exact way one of the powers from that game works.
If Van Helsing were a lean 90 minutes I might suggest it as a fun little time but that extra 40 minutes of run time is brutal.

12. Dracula 2000 (2000)

Watched On: Max

Pulled from IMDB trivia,
“Script doctor Scott Derrickson told the story of how he got the job working on this film. Harvey Weinstein called him, saying, "I just bought this script, called, 'Dracula 2000'." Derrickson replied, "Oh, yeah? Is it good?" Weinstein replied, "It stinks!" Derrickson asked, "So why did you buy it?", and Weinstein replied "Because it's called, 'Dracula 2000'."

That explains so much about this movie.

Just to get it out of the way, Fillion, Masterson, and Weinstein can all drown in piss for being creeps and creep apologists.

The only thing this movie has going for it is Gerard Butler is hot as hell through the whole thing. When he’s not directly doing anything I’m just waiting for him to come back. I will also shout out the scene where Dracula they use Dracula casting no reflection pretty creatively, I guess they had limited cool ideas. I also can’t stand how this movie references the Dracula novel, it feels ham handed and not at all clever, “Ooo here’s a guy named Dr Seward do ya remember that?” Truthfully I think I’d take Queen of the Damned over this one any day, at least that movie is pulling from original material that hadn’t been adapted a thousand times. The whole climax and end is also totally garbage. In it's own way though, Dracula 2000 is a hell of a snapshot of it's time and since it's only 99 minutes it might be worth it just for that. Also get a load of this soundtrack listing,

13. Maximum Overdrive (1986)

Watched On: DVD

Ah now this is the good stuff. Many a late night was spent with soda and pizza watching this classic on TNT. It’s not art by a long shot but boy is it fun. I remember one time as a little kid seeing a semi with the Green Goblin face on the front during a family road trip and low key freaking out since the bad guy truck was gonna get us. Apparently there were rumors that George Romero secretly directed chunks of Maximum Overdrive and on this watch I can really see it, when I think of some of the vehicle shots Romero did in Knightriders these have that same feel to them. You get some really solid character actors and Emilio Estevez has some big badass energy bargaining with the murderous semi-trucks and stuff. The AC/DC soundtrack also massively whips rear end.

Watched On: Blu Ray

“It takes all kinds of critters to make Farmer Vincent’s fritters”

Love that line.

Motel Hell is full of fuckin’ creeps and it’s great. In hindsight I kind of can’t believe this used to air on TNT at all even with edits because of how weird it is in general but I applaud them for doing so. It's funny, it's violent, it's shocking, it's weird, it's got it all. They were doing a bit of Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 but years earlier.

Watched On: Tubi
:spooky: Horror Adjacent :spooky:
:spooky: New to You (Complete!) :spooky:
:spooky: Around the World (2/4) :spooky:

A Korean Action/Crime/Thriller about a cop hunting a serial killer that no one believes exists, and a gangster nearly killed by the serial killer who team up to find said killer. Now do I wish this had leaned a little harder into the horror elements? Sure. But otherwise this movie was a lot of fun. I used to feel like mid-budget stuff like this was pretty much dead but I just wasn’t looking in the right place, South Korea is knocking it out of the park. It looks good, good music, I never felt like the movie was spinning wheels, it’s no Nightcrawler or Zodiac but still a good time.

16. Necropolis (1986)

Watched On: Tubi
:spooky: History of Horror (Complete!) :spooky:

A smoking hot witch from the 1600s is reincarnated as a smoking hot punk lady on a motorbike who’s looking to suck souls and gain eternal youth. Surprisingly good score. Lots of use of the f-slur in one scene, not a fan of that. This movie is mostly the now alive and in New York witch going around using her powers on people, usually leading to their demise, and looking good doing it. If you’re a fan of sleazy 80’s New York vibes this also has exactly what you’re looking for. Pretty surprised by the effects here too, much better than I would assumed going in. Nothing that’s gonna blow your wig off but really competent stuff. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a movie where someone grows extra breasts and nurses a group of leathery skinned demons in front of a pentagram. This whole movie was better than I expected if I’m being honest.

17. Jaws (1975)

Watched On: Blu Ray

A classic, one of the best. I’m not really sure what I can say that hasn’t been said other than praise. Great actors, shot well, the way they had to use the shark ends up perfect on accident, and one of the finest jump scares in cinema. Jaws is the whole reason I’m scared of sharks and to some extent the deep ocean, which makes me a little weird growing up on and still living on the coast.

Quint getting eaten by the shark is so fuckin’ sad. He survived all that poo poo to get got back home :smith:

18. Casper (1995)

Watched On: Netflix

Had a hangout with some friends and we decided to put on something light. Outside of some dodgy mid-90s CGI, a Mel Gibson cameo, and some uh questionable “romance” elements I thought Casper held up pretty well and was a cute and fun time. Since this is the first time I’d seen it since 1995 I didn’t even realize how much talent worked on the whole thing, Dean Cundey as DOP was especially a benefit because it’s a really good looking movie and the sets are fun to look at. This is absolutely what the various Haunted Mansion movies wish they were. I’m not gonna tell you Casper is amazing or anything but it was a nice way to spend 100 minutes with some pals.

20. Halloween (1978)

I was on a roll of watching favorites. Halloween owns bones. I waffle on whether I like the producer mandated open ending but this time I was into it.

21. Suburban Sasquatch (2004)

Alright so this movie is really really bad but I feel like I had to say I’ve seen it without any kind of commentary. I always respect the hustle of small time filmmakers but their ambition was a little too big for their abilities and I’m glad it exists.

22. Blood Theatre (1984)

Watched On: Tubi

“Unsuspecting workers are killed one by one as they prepare an allegedly haunted movie theatre for its grand reopening.”

Well this movie certainly as sleazy as I’d imagined but also just as not scary/unfunny as I’d imagined too just from appearances. This is absolutely the kind of b-movie slasher that other media makes fun of through parody. Terrible acting, limp stabbings, and a total lack of tension, if this were made today people would be trying to say it was bad on purpose to poke fun at the genre but that certainly ain’t it. Hard pass on this one.

24. The Frighteners (1996)

Watched On: Tubi

Solid as a rock movie that kind of does it all? It doesn’t bombard you with a bunch of lore or anything, very brief exposition and the performances fill you in and tell you everything you need to know so the movie is free to actually be a movie for the runtime. In a movie full of good characters and performances, Jeffrey Combs is stealing the show as an absolutely fried FBI agent specializing in occult crime. CGI doesn’t look great at all though and if I’m being honest I didn’t think it did at the time either, I mean, the effects for the regular ghosts was just ok but the grim reaper thing stunk out loud.

25. Graveyard Shift (1990)

Watched On: Max

Went in not expecting much and turns out Graveyard Shift was a pleasant surprise. It’s such a grimy movie as far as the appearance and capturing the vibe of a town that’s long dead and rotting from the inside out. You also get to spend some time with Brad Dourif and Andrew Divoff who are a lotta fun, the characters in the movie have this combination of being these realistic small town types but also feeling very weird in a way. Was also a big fan of the set for the textile mill and the cavernous basement, it made me want to go check out some videos of people exploring those kind of places, bet there are some sweet spooky factories just languishing. Even though I enjoyed I can for sure understand King’s own criticism of it, the short story is way more scary than the film adaptation by a mile.

26. Silver Bullet (1985)

Watched On: Max

We roll on with the King adaptations. The opening of this movie made me think of a story that went around everywhere when I was a kid about someone’s drunk grandpa/uncle/etc passed out and got their head chopped on railroad tracks, wonder if that came from this movie or if it’s just a thing that happens for real? Anyway, this is a solidly weird kids on bikes style story with a real shock of violence to it, it kind of works for me? I love the setting and environments, the small town surrounded by spooktastic woods and fog. Everett McGill absolutely owns in his role and even Gary Busey is a lot of fun. Pretty neat werewolf transformation tucked in here too. Another solid offering inspired by the Kingster’s work.
