Whoa whoa wait, time out.
Hello I am going to do the thing.

My personal challenge is 31 movies that are new to me, including the entries in the Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street, and Friday the 13th franchises that I have still never seen for whatever reason.

https://letterboxd.com/twernt/list/spooky-october-2023-shameful-omissions/

For the rest of the 31, I'm wondering if it would be feasible to take requests. Here's everything that I know I've seen, so if someone suggests something and it's available to me, I'll add it to the list above and watch it. Maybe it will be a disaster. Who knows?

https://letterboxd.com/twernt/films/genre/horror/

I also usually do the extra challenges so I'm grabbing Bingo Card Lucky 7.

1. Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers
1989
Directed by Dominique Othenin-Girard

:spooky: NEW-TO-YOU :spooky:

Die! Die! Die. Die, Michael. Die! Die. Die.

Everything about this just feels off somehow but it's not like there's anything specific to point to and say "look at this one awful thing that was done poorly resulting in this weird mess of a movie". The cameras are generally pointed in the right direction. The actors appear to be reciting their actual lines. Dr. Loomis is frenetic and creepy. Some of the right ingredients are there. It's all just so confounding.

2. Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers
1995
Directed by Joe Chappelle

:spooky: THE SAMHAIN CHALLENGE :spooky:

On a weirdness scale of one to ten, he rates about a thirteen.

Halloween 6 tries really hard to define and expand the lore around Michael Myers and the cult that has some kind of poorly defined interest in him. Something about druids and runes and Samhain and blood sacrifices. None of it really even matters because this movie never actually goes anywhere meaningful. It's like they were really counting on being able to tie up all sorts of loose ends in Halloween 7, which didn't so much happen.

3. Halloween H20: 20 Years Later
1998
Directed by Steve Miner

:spooky: NEW-TO-YOU :spooky:

It's Halloween. I guess everyone's entitled to one good scare.

H20 makes two very important correct choices. First, it completely ignores everything that happened in 4, 5, and 6. Michael Myers is back after a twenty year absence in which nothing noteworthy happened. There's no explanation and there doesn't need to be one. Second, it brings Laurie Strode back and Jamie Lee Curtis carries the entire movie.

5. Halloween
2007
Directed by Rob Zombie

:spooky: ROB ZOMBIE 20TH ANNIVERSARY CHALLENGE :spooky:

Was that the boogeyman?
As a matter of fact, I do believe it was.

Taking a character who had no real substance to their backstory or motivation (ignoring the druid stuff) and giving them both can be tricky, but it's a reboot and I'd rather have Robert Zombert try something new than just go through the motions. The relationship with the original probably hurts more than it helps though. I think that if you changed some of the names and swapped out the mask you would have a movie that did much worse at the box office but with much better reviews.

6 . Halloween II
2009
Directed by Rob Zombie

:spooky: NEW-TO-YOU :spooky:

You got snapped on by Weird Al!

Halloween II is simultaneously better and worse than the first one and it's exactly what you would imagine Rob Zombie's take on Halloween to be -- a vicious and gratuitous ride. It gets rough in parts and the sound is outstanding. Some of the Deborah Myers Snow Queen stuff feels superfluous and the end is kind of a mess, but it succeeds as a straightforward horror movie where the real monster is emotional damage.

7. Halloween
2018
Directed by David Gordon Green

:spooky: CineD HORROR THREAD POLL CHALLENGE :spooky:

I mean, what, a couple people getting killed by one guy with a knife is not that big of a deal.

Easily the best Halloween movie since Halloween (1978 not 2007). It hits every note, it's full of all of these fantastic little chracter moements, and even has a genuine surprise that I did not see coming. Instead of trying to deconstruct the genre or wink at the audience, Halloween just ignores everything since Halloween II (1981) and shows us what would happen next.

8. Halloween Kills
2021
Directed by David Gordon Green

:spooky: NEW-TO-YOU :spooky:

Hey, Michael! This is for Dr. Loomis.

Halloween Kills is uneven and a little messy, but in a very intentional way because it's a movie about fear, panic, and chaos. Instead of everyone making bad decisions because the genre requires it, Haddonfield is full of people who are scared and confused. This is a movie that works because there's nothing Americans should find more relatable than characters who consistently overestimate their competence in the face of a threat they barely understand.

I know the Laurie Strode story. She teased a man with brain damage and then he snapped.

They were going for something really interesting here and the movie ended the way it should have, but it felt actually felt like a letdown to watch the people in Haddonfield do what they should have done every other time they got the opportunity. The Michael Myers internship was a fantastic idea though.

I loved Greta. A lot. And if maybe, just maybe, someone or something killed her, I'd like to hear about it.

It's all just so goofy, but at least the effects effects are interesting and Robert Englund seems to be having fun. If you're not in the mood for this particular brand of nonsense it gets insufferable in parts. Anyone planning to watch all of the Nightmare on Elm Street movies they haven't already seen should definitely check it out though.

:spooky: HISTORY LESSON :spooky: 1990s

Every town has an Elm Street.

It really feels like they're running out of ideas here which is weird because ☆dream magic☆ should let them do pretty much anything they want. It also doesn't help that all of the characters, except for Doc are so flat. Every time, Freddy's trying to get out or come back or whatever and it just gets tedious after a while. To be fair, the montage during the end credits is fun.

You big dildo, eat your loving slop.

It's like the cast and crew of a 1980s sleaze comedy decided to make a horror flick and it's just so bizarre. Except for Reggie, the kids are a bunch of cardboard cutouts with no personality or cardboard cutout stereotypes, including a bigger kid who won't stop eating candy bars. At one point, relatively early on, some greaser hoodlums from the 1950s show up and it's never explained. The strangest thing is that Jason is basically absent for most of the movie. They were definitely trying something new here.

The recaps are back! Part VII has some lulls here and there but it doesn't even matter. This is Kane Hodder's first time behind the mask and they're all in on the supernatural stuff now. Even though much of the gore is implied, we do get the iconic sleeping bag kill. It's also not a high bar, but the victims actually deliver decent performances here. Kane Hodder is the real star here.

19. Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan
1989
Directed by Rob Hedden

Now look. I think we'll be more productive if we split up. Okay?

First off, Jason is on that boat way too long. It's Jason Takes Manhattan not Jason Enjoys a Leisurely Cruise. The audience wants to see Jason deal with all sorts of late 80s NYC characters, maybe throw a Guardian Angel into a runaway bodega. At least he finally gets to burst through a porthole and a telephone booth, after all these years when he's had nothing but plain old residential windows to burst through.

Directed by Rob Hedden

I have your baby. Come to the Vorhees house. Alone.

You sort of have to respect a movie that goes out of its way to take a crap all over the previous eight installments in its franchise. This doesn't mean you need to enjoy or it think that it's any good. This movie is very dumb.

0. Friday the 13th
1956
Directed by Roger Corman

Don't be silly. No man could have survived such a fall!

Vincent Price and Barbara Steele star in this early Corman movie that combines his two great loves -- gothic horror and outer space. At a remote castle, thirteen strangers are stalked by a mysterious masked figure. Will they figure out the dark secret that connects them before it's too late? Price and Steele are fantastic, of course. It's a little rough around the edges, with some of the supporting cast seeming out of their element, especially Peter Lorre who is slumming it here as the hunchback butler. The third act has a pretty amazing twist that may or may not involve time travel.

Guys, it's okay! He just wanted his machete back.

If you're going to make schlock you need to lean into it the way Jason X does. This cannot possibly be a movie that was intended to be taken seriously, no matter how the actors play it. Jason X is a pretty strong argument for Jason's supremacy among non-Leprechaun horror icons. After all, have Michael Myers or Frederick Krueger gone to space, much less outer space in the future?

:spooky: HISTORY LESSON :spooky: 2000s

You came about that close to hittin' the start button on a whoop-rear end machine, boy!

It's a decent enough reboot that sits somewhere in the middle of the franchise. It sticks to what works with a few really effective tweaks to the formula. There's no magic worm or magic lightning or magic telekinetic lady. Otherwise, it's just a group of young adults who go into the woods to act like jerks and make bad decisions until Jason kills them.

Nathan? Nathan? Nathan! Nathan! Nathan! Nathan! Nathan! Nathan!

Antrum is the heart-warming story of two siblings trying to rescue their dead dog from Hell by digging a hole in the forest. Antrum also a faux documentary that we will refer to as "outer Antrum" and wraps the "inner Antrum" in the previous sentence, which is also a movie that will kill you if you watch it. It's a neat idea, but if "inner Antrum" depends on being able to coast on spooky vibes, the vibes need to be spookier.

Bone Crasher, Stabby, you boys want some exercise?

This was shot really close to where I grew up and it was weird to recognize some landmarks, like Today's Adult Entertainment Center.

Deadbeat at Dawn is a grimy, zero budget look at the violence of everyday life in Dayton, Ohio during the late 1980s. It's definitely rough in parts but it's put together so well and there's a surprising amount of blood.

A man who is convinced that his father was buried alive is, predictably, paranoid about being buried alive. The Premature Burial feels much longer than it actually is. :spooky: HORROR ADJACENT :spooky:

A white person can't join in the ritural. It would bring bad luck.

It's a classic American 1950s spooky sci-fi flick, with a twist. The twist is that it's Italian, not American at all -- "Aiuto! Il mostro dissolverà il mio bambino!" There are multiple monsters, a comet, and an ancient Mayan mystery. Like many similar movies, there's some action at the beginning, then a long second act in which everyone just talks about what may or may not be happening before there's a proper monster rampage at the end. It may also be Mario Bava's first horror movie. He's credited as co director, but it's really not clear whether he or Riccardo Freda did most of the work.

28. Razorback
1984
Directed by Russell Mulcahy

:spooky: WHEN ANIMALS OF UNUSUAL SIZE ATTACK! :spooky:

God and the devil couldn't have created a more despicable species.

There's a lot more happening in Razorback than you would expect. An old outbacksman has been nursing a grudge for years. The world's most oblivious Canadian heads to Australia to search for his missing wife. A pair of Borderlands bandits manage to outdo themselves every time you think they're the most despicable side villains in the history of Ozsploitation. This is all ignoring the constant threat of a wild boar the size of a rhinoceros and the time it just ran off with a quarter of this guy's house.

Gyro Zeppeli posted:

I'm so glad more people are watching Razorback this month, it's probably my favourite new watch for the challenge. That shot of the quarter of the house getting dragged away, TV still on and all, is so perfect.

It seemed like a bunch of other people were watching it and it's perfect for that challenge, probably way better than Eight Legged Freaks which was my original plan.

Edit: That shot was so great!

No goofy AI "art" picture for this one because look at that poster. That is a handsome poster.

Dead is the norm now. I'm the one who's not normal.

This doesn't necessarily do anything new in the lonely survivor trying to maintain his grip on sanity after an apocalypse genre, but it does pretty much everything right. Sam, the survivor, isn't special or even all that interesting. This makes him easy to identify with, provided you are also a relatively boring white dude who just wants his tapes back from his ex girlfriend. The Night Eats the World does have a few really nice little moments. The highlights are the cat's betrayal and Sam's spiteful reaction, the realization of what happened to Sarah, and the interrupted floor cleaning.

Directed by John Carpenter

:spooky: CHILDHOOD TRAUMA :spooky:

I've got a message for you and you're not going to like it.

Prince of Darkness is the first movie that I can remember actually scaring me and it was my go-to movie as a teenager if someone else wanted to watch something spooky.

It holds up really well despite the fact that a few of the cast members are really phoning it in. Victor Wong and Donald Pleasence more than make up for it, especially their office conversation about the nature of reality. The intersection of quantum physics and spirituality still feels ahead of its time. I've seen it before but it's been a really long time and the end is not what I remembered at all.

32. Martin
1977
Directed by George A. Romero

:spooky: HISTORY LESSON :spooky: 1970s

In real life, you can't get people to do what you want them to do.

Martin, the movie, is a really solid entry in the "are they or aren't they" subgenre of horror. Is he an actual vampire trying to navigate the modern world in which he feels like an outsider or is there a more reasonable explanation for his behavior? Are the black-and-white montages memories or just his imagination? Either way, John Amples plays the character just right. He's awkward and uncomfortable and never feels truly menacing.

We really are. We really are doing really good. So much better.

It's unfair to Lyle to just say "lesbian Rosemary's Baby" and move on. Rosemary's Baby was clearly the inspiration here, but Lyle is short and tense and packs so much ambiguity and misdirection into its runtime that it really stands on its own. Gaby Hoffmann carries the movie, but the rest of the cast is also very good.
