so long as people know that if they choose to neglect ped's for ideological / religious reasons, then they are choosing to fight against mutants. the ufc doing this with usada is pretty much that declaration so i'm cool with it.

Not that I think there’s many elite fighters not willing to take the risk, but concern over the medical/ health effects of PEDs is another legit reason to avoid them.

they’ve been taking a much more active role in monitoring weights and providing advice. they provide all the meals and specific weight cutting instruction of any fighter wants it, and even with high level guys who can afford their own specialists, they are still checking in at least daily to monitor everything. they want to avoid incidents like Khabib hitting his head on the tub again, get earlier notice if a fighter is on track to miss so they can readjust things if necessary, and they want to educate fighters and camps and disseminate knowledge and prevent some of the more Josh Fabia-level grifters from ruining fights.

With the PIs, again fighters can get year round food for free and performance and actual MMA training with all of their specialists. The UFC likes having guys in Vegas for all their in house shows and for possible replacements for the rest of their cards, so free coaching and food and supplements and performance monitoring and coaching and pre-specialist medical advice they just give for free.

So the free food is only fresh stuff on site? No stipend/shipped stuff for the journeyman training in BFE?

Hell, it could have been a leg punch TKO if he didn't reposition on the fence.

Someone I know very peripherally is cornering someone in another MMA event in Abu Dhabi, and he ran into Volk

They're pretty much the same size in that pic, and the guy I know is not tall but jacked in person, mostly hidden under that black T shirt.
The 25lb cut Volk is talking about seems on the money.

Cain gets into the prison stint a little bit, but I just appreciate all the details.

This fight feels like a test case for me -- I'm against steroid use, but in the absence of attempts at legitimate testing or controls, I'm definitely ok with people upping their juice (whether from 0 or not) when fighting known dopers.

Jon Jones Vs an actual toddler would be a better watch if anything. Most people wouldn't attack a child, but Jon Jones would punt that thing over the cage.

That's a foul, Jones loses again, toddler relegates Matt Hamill to annals of UFC history.

The announces said fury looked like a tall bag of milk at the start, and I loled.
I’ve always said that Fury’s body is the quintessential “ideal male body, peak performance, and you may not like it” meme. Sadly this fight has rocked the jiggly foundations of that premise.

Marching Powder posted:

i still can't explain francis looking that good in such a high pomp debut against that calibre of opponent. Actually, now that I think on it, his punches are so ridiculous it's actually a handicap in his favour to say that's all your allowed to do.

I think there’s some truth to boxers getting caught off guard by how shittily timed non-boxer punches can be, and hesitating more than usual on when they initiate, knowing the other fighter doesn’t even realize what’s feeding into their offensive timing. With Ngannou, the power of those situationally awkward punches got respect within the first few rounds, so Fury actually had some realistic incentive to hesitate instead of trying to bully through and lead every exchange to shut him down mentally with landed punches.

Now, unfortunately for the Diazes they don't have much sway with athletic commissions or understanding of how the Unified Rules of MMA actually work, but it's hard to find a fight where they lost according to Stockton rules. The Josh Thomson fight, maybe the Rory/Dong fights where Nate was giving up tons of weight. I can't think of one Nick lost except maybe GSP. Nick seemed to have a weird (for him) respect for GSP's cardio and grind.

e: forgot to add the original point of all this. Which is: the best way to win fights that are held under MMA rules and regulation but actually under Stockton scoring is to try and stand and bang and knock the Diazes out.

For Nick, he handily lost his first fight with KJ Noons on rules 1-3. He didn't really have an orthodox stance game back then, and his short chopping right that had him standing all on his front foot was totally nullified by Noons' orthodox body cross. KJ knocked him down, refused to get dragged to the ground, made Nick whiff his high kicks, and busted his nose up for the stoppage.
The rematch showed that, of course, Noons still couldn't hang on rule 4.

Some amusing screenshots I got of the fight

If yall didn't know the name,

quote:

Ngannou spoke about GIMIK Fight Promotions and noted that UFC president Dana White was unintentionally instrumental in his decision. He mentioned that White's insults towards the discussions for his boxing bouts being gimmick fights led him to use the name.

He said:
"I was just doing my thing and then at the end of the day, I put it out. It was all about gimmick fight, which is the same thing that he [Dana White] was trying to do, a gimmick fight. Next time that he has a gimmick fight, he should send it over to me, I'll handle it."
