with a time sensitive system like VAR you need a protocol, a process and a standard for everything. they didn’t have a clear way to hand off decisions to var and vice versa. they didn’t have a process for rescinding var calls in the event of a miscommunication, even if play has restarted. they thought through the broad strokes but didn’t think through the implementation details, the edge cases. you can bench a ref for a week — sack them, even — and send them for more training but humans make mistakes no matter what. the system should be accounting for that possibility in ways other than making a very public apology
