They usually take up one seat, so OP could've sat in the back too. It says the animal was on the floor so...having one seats floor taken up, and sitting in the other seat, seems fine to me. Riding in the front next to the driver when there's space in the back is a weird choice. Especially since lots of people like to comfort their pets on car trips.

That said I'm mostly baffled how the driver drove away when this person was banging on the car. Did he think the rider was going to rob him? Why did he deny having had the cat, hours later? What is this legitimate explanation the Lyft CEO mentions?

I've almost had multiple Lyft drivers straight up drive away with my luggage at the airport. I'm not surprised this happened considering some of those drivers are braindead. You have to leave the door open until you've gotten all your poo poo before closing it so they don't take off.

I would say the cat was a demon. The cat used its demonic powers to brain hijack the driver. The lyft driver will now lose their only means of income and most likely lose their car and get evicted. It's just what the devil cat wanted.

The more normal move would have been to slide the carrier over and get in the back next to it.

Nah, the cat somehow went from inside the car to dumped on the streets, which as it turns out is a texas felony

Which I am to understand might mean that the lyft driver and the cat owner need to have an old west showdown

Exactly, "somehow".

I know we're in agreement, but there's a pretty big legal distinction between "letting the cat go" and "intentionally dumping the cat off somewhere". The first one implies that the cat may have escaped on its own by accident, while the second one means the driver willfully and purposely took the cat out of the car and left it somewhere, on purpose. The former could be written off as a tragic accident; the latter is a literal state felony crime with a possible prison sentence.

The cat was in a carrier and there was no carrier when they found it. The driver consciously took it out and dropped it off. I don’t think it’s even possible to generously assume that the cat just bolted.

My guess is the driver genuinely didn't notice the cat was in the car when he drove off, saw it later, panicked because he thought he was already in deep rear end trouble by then, and ditched the cat thinking that that was the only way to save himself. I've worked a gig job in Austin and can confirm that overwork and inattention are motherfuckers sometimes, although I never loving stole someone's pet and then lied about it.

The owner's Reddit updates also say the driver was allergic to cats and wouldn't have taken the ride if he'd noticed it included a cat, so that may have factored into it as well.

Definitely sounds like the driver did it, but I got a fabric carrier years ago that my cat managed to muscle his way out of (the zipper came apart, luckily I was there to grab him.) I'm not gonna trust a zippered carrier again

20 bucks is a bit much but I'm willing to be it started bc of the sheer amount of people who leave bags or phones in the Lyft and then the driver has to turn around to bring it, likely after their next fare, and from god knows where - which loses them time and essentially, money. Having to bring you poo poo means they can't be earning a fare, so if that money is going to paying for the driver to return the poo poo, great. In the past, you'd have had to haul your rear end to the taxi depot yourself to get it, but those don't exist no more so...pony up. Cabbies deserve cash for their trouble and lost time - not in this case, ofc, but in general, cabbies deserve $$ if they're bringing the item back to where you are and handing it to you.

If Lyft is just pocketing it, gently caress them.

No, fatigue from working as a vet tech and seeing the dichotomy of people being outraged about overt animal cruelty while regularly failing to do anything about their own more mundane version of it in their own homes that they practice out of ignorance and laziness.
