I used to read a lot of folklore.org which is a site full of stories about the development of the machintosh and even among people who remember him fondly he still comes off as a tremendous rear end in a top hat Doug Englebart passed away around the same time as jobs (maybe a couple years later?) and contributed a lot more to computing without being a jerk

I’m also pretty sure it was inevitable: blackberries were already so popular they were called “crack berries” and the latest ipod was basically going to look like the iPhone; wasn’t Steve just the guy who said “hey let’s put a phone in that?” (Or maybe he just thought whoever said that had a good idea) Anyway I know it’s easy to look back on history and say “that was inevitable” but I really don’t think “what if we add phone calls to this handheld computer” was that big of a leap One thing I will give Steve credit for is realizing computers should be locked down appliances. He was championing that mindset all the way back to the Macintosh (he championed the idea that it shouldn't be upgradable, that it be fully contained in a single unit, etc.). He realized if you give nerds the freedom to create endless permutations of the hardware it would be impossible to make everything “just work”. I think a good modern example of this philosophy is the tablet: people had tried tablets before, but they ran an os intended for a laptop and had all kinds of weird accessories. Then came the iPad and it ran a phone OS and did a lot less than previous tablets, but it was a hit.
