It's like Gareth Edwards watched Cloverfield and said "hmm, what if even worse actors had some of the worst dialog ever written....and we can save money on CG by just never showing anything people care about." I don't think they wrote dialogue. IIRC, they improvised almost everything. And I was wondering why the tension between the leads was so strong so I looked it up, they were a married couple. Movie was a bit boring, though.
