I think there's a lot of things you could have as a young QB that would make people believe in you. Yeah obviously if you're a high draft pick that everyone says is good. But if you had visible elite traits(huge arm, size, can run fast) but somehow got drafted late, people might credit the coach with unlocking you but wouldn't be so skeptical that you yourself are good. Joe Milton making the pro bowl next year would be like this. Or if you just had an amazing college career/stats, maybe from a small school or FCS. Purdy just has nothing to latch onto and it'll take a while for people just buy into a guy suddenly being an NFL superstar purely off of making good/quick decisions

Also I prefer it when cool athletic QBs are the best so will be rooting for Purdy to pumpkin it up down the stretch/in the playoffs

Lamar better get at least one td pass this week, because I don't know if voters are ready to give mvp to a guy with 19 regardless of other context

Goff is the go-to example for an absolutely terrible QB who made good. Though not good enough for team to not one to move on eventually, even though they extended him

Milroe actually starting to use his legs was a big reason the offense started functioning. He accounted for 12 of their rushing TDs and was their third leading rusher. Whatever you want to call him he was definitely not a game manager.

Najee got to play RB for Bama teams that were some of the most prolific ever in terms of passing offense. He benefitted a ton from the fact that his offenses were putting up like 350 passing yards a game.

Najee is incredible at one on one feats of strength and athleticism, which really gets featured in a powerhouse college team. He's absolutely terrible at the RB version of 'processing'(vision probably) so it's really hard for him to get in those good situations in the NFL

He was also a surprisingly good receiver early on(not sure what happened there)

Oh wait this is the QB thread? Najee is 1-1 on his career, maybe the Steelers should give him a look if Rudolph pumpkins on Sunday

The Giants were historically bad, they gave up the second most sacks all-time. The Commanders, Jets and Titans were all around the Panthers with 64 or 65. That's just a normal terrible season

All of them scored more points then the Panthers, though the Panthers did score more points per drive then the Jets

2nd most sacked rookie QB of all time.

"This is normal"

I mean there aren't huge numbers of 16 game rookie starter seasons to begin with. What's unusual is that they gave a guy that overmatched the opportunity to compile that many sacks because usually rookies struggling that much get injured or benched at some point, or don't see the field immediately for good reason. Levis for example just this season got sacked on 9.9% of his drop backs vs bryce at 10.5%. Zach Wilson got 13 games at 10.3%. Fields was almost 12% in 10 games(and never improved). Haskins(rip) was over 12% in 7 games. Goff was over 11% but only got to play the last 7 games. Etc

Lots of crappy rookies get sacked a ton, it's nothing unprecedented. A guy getting to play a full season like that when it's clearly not working is the outlier

He did get to quiet the durability questions a bit though

Maybe Shanahan and Campbell cracked the code on accident. Shanahan out of not being able to get a top QB, and Campbell out of being meathead-Rainman. In a league where defenses have become complex, suffocating, and impossible to read, complex high flying offenses don't work as well anymore. Wasting high draft picks or 25% of your cap on an elite QB isn't worthwhile, defenses finally caught up.

The Lions and SF built offenses that have great running schemes, flat and slot throws, and great lines that work really well against defenses that have been built for 2 decades to beat complicated, long developing passing plays.

I think having a bunch of playmakers that can turn short plays into chunks is a lot more important than a mastermind QB now. And having a QB that can just get the ball in one of very limited opening spots to a playmaker is good enough.

imo

At least for playoff results, the distribution of the super QBs among the conferences is distorting things a little here. The final four in the AFC was Lamar, Mahomes, Allen and Stroud. Those guys largely don't exist in the NFC, so you're likely going to end up with some bums in the NFC title game
