Detroit’s new goal song being the most annoying part of Without Me is an inspired choice, but I feel like they should’ve waited a few more years until they’re better before adopting an annoying goal song. Two diverging strategies, let's see how they work.

Here's a unique thing about that Red Wings streak - we never hung a banner for any season year ending in 0 during that long run. 1990 was the last time missing the playoffs for decades, 2000 was when St. Louis won the division and the Red Wings lost in the second round, 2010 was when Chicago won the division, 2020 was the worst statistical year ever.

Here's a general look at how everything stands right now, from The Athletic and keeping track of seeds myself.

An overall view of everything:

Specifically:

- the Boston Bruins and Florida Panthers are #1 and #2 in the Atlantic. The Bruins have one more point and one game in hand, and can clinch the division tomorrow night with a win against Washington. Florida would need to tie Boston in points, as the Panthers have every tiebreaker.

- the Toronto Maple Leafs and Tampa Bay Lightning are locked into the 3rd Atlantic seed and 1st Eastern wild card respectively. Both of those were clinched yesterday.

- the New York Rangers and Carolina Hurricanes are #1 and #2 in the Metro. New York is three points up on Carolina, with one game left to Carolina's two games left. Carolina also has the various win tiebreakers, by one win in each. The Rangers play Ottawa on Monday, and the Hurricanes play Chicago today and Columbus on Tuesday.

- the New York Rangers also need one point to clinch the top spot in the Eastern Conference. Boston needs to pass them outright to get this, as the Rangers have the tiebreaker.

- the New York Islanders have a fairly commanding 3 or 4 point lead on everyone else for the 3rd Metro seed. Two points by the Islanders would clinch this, and New York has no tiebreaker scenarios in their favor. New York plays New Jersey tomorrow night and Pittsburgh on Wednesday.

- the last playoff seed in the East is the crazy one. The Washington Capitals are in the spot now with 87 points and tiebreakers, but they have two games remaining against Boston and Philadelphia, both of whom have reason to play. The Detroit Red Wings are tied with Washington at 87 points, with a home-and-home pair of games against Montreal on Monday and Tuesday. Detroit has the easiest path left with the only opponents already eliminated from the playoffs. The Pittsburgh Penguins had the edge on everyone going into play yesterday, but the Penguins lost to Boston as everyone else won. Pittsburgh has 86 points and games remaining against the Islanders and Predators. The Philadelphia Flyers still have a path to the playoffs, as they only have Washington remaining with 87 points. Philly needs to beat Washington, jump ahead of Pittsburgh and Washington, and at least tie Detroit (as the Flyers have the tiebreaker).

- the Dallas Stars have clinched the Central division, and need to gain one point or have Vancouver lose a point to clinch the top spot in the West.

- the Winnipeg Jets and Colorado Avalanche will play each other in the first round, and all that's left for them is who has home ice. The Jets are two points up with all tiebreakers in their favor, as each team has two games remaining.

- the Nashville Predators have effectively clinched the #1 wild card spot, as they would need to lose their remaining game and have the Kings and Golden Knights basically win out to change anything. Nashville has 99 points, a strong lead to wrap things up. That should officially wrap up today or tomorrow, once any result goes in Nashville's favor.

- the Vancouver Canucks all but won the Pacific division last night, defeating the Edmonton Oilers on the road to open up a five-point lead with two and three games remaining, respectively. Vancouver and Edmonton can only finish first and second in the Pacific as it is, and those seeds will be official with one point in Vancouver's favor.

- the Los Angeles Kings and Vegas Golden Knights have both clinched playoff spots, and they are playing for the 3rd seed in the Pacific and wild card positioning. Los Angeles has 97 points and two games remaining, while Vegas has 94 points and three games remaining. The only playoff-bound opponent for any of those five games is Colorado playing Vegas today.

That is everything, going into today.

The Eastern Conference playoff race, going into Tuesday

If the Capitals win, they are in.

If the Red Wings have more points than Washington and Pittsburgh in any combination, they are in.

If the Penguins win on Wednesday, and the Capitals and Red Wings both lost in some way on Tuesday, they are in.

If the Flyers win, and everyone else loses in regulation, they are in.
