Boeser was great. Pettersson was great. Miller was great. Powerplay was 3/6. Lafferty seems good. McDavid was -3 and looked like poo poo. Skinner and Campbell both rocked a 750 sv%. I couldn't have asked for more last night. What an unexpectedly wonderful start to the year.

The Canucks do this every year though. They start fast, disastrously collapse in the late fall/early winter, then play .550 hockey the last six weeks to pull themselves out of the #1 pick lottery. It's their thing.

That is the complete opposite of what they do. It took the Canucks 8 games to get their first win last year. They blew a 3-0 lead to the Oilers on opening night. They do play out of their minds to close out the season though.

Aren't Fridays usually slow days since all the Canadian teams want the Saturday slots which takes like 10-14 teams out of the equation without back-to-backs?

Friday is also a really bad day for TV because people like to go out and do things. Saturday doesn't make much sense either but it's a cultural institution in Canada and they can't change that.

The NHLPA isn't keen on its players not getting paid. A whole section of the CBA is devoted to what the league can and cannot do with regards to suspensions and the players get a bunch of rights to appeal to a suspension of any length. It's easier for the league to not suspend guys which is why we typically see only fines or very short suspensions outside of egregious cases.

I can't find the clip but in the Canucks/Oilers game on Saturday Joshua got an interference penalty when McDavid turned and accidentally skated into him.

Eric the Mauve posted:

By the book, if he was between McDavid and the puck at the time and not actively trying to play the puck, that's still interference. Whether you meant to get in the way doesn't matter.

No McDavid wasn't looking and skated into Joshua. It wasn't a penalty by any stretch of the imagination and everyone agreed at the time. It was just one of the many unintentional collisions that happen in a hockey game that, for whatever reason, was called a penalty.

I suppose OV could get the record as a powerplay specialist... But man he looked old/slow/disinterested/etc.

As I've said plenty of times before, this is the best possible outcome. Old man Ovi just refusing to give up and slowly chipping away at Gretzky's record while Spec and Matheson write increasingly hysterical hit pieces about how unsportsmanlike it is. Couple that with McDavid leaving and I might actually ascend into heaven in corporeal form.

I don't think Ovi will play past this contract so if he doesn't hit 30 this year, he isn't gonna break the record.

Short of him being physically incapable of continuing to play, I don't see any universe where he retires prior to breaking the record. He's 73 back, assuming he's good for 20ish per year from here on out he'll likely just keep plugging away until he gets then there immediately retire.

ThinkTank

Darude - Adam Sandstorm posted:

If he scores in the 20s this year I'm not sure he's scoring 20 in 4 years.

Sure but if he scores an average of 15 a year he only has to stick around until he's 41. Plus it's likely he'll get at least 25 this year. A guy who takes that volume of shots and is force fed as many pp minutes and attacking zone faceoffs as Ovi is will inevitably score that many. It's arguable if he's providing a positive contribution and at this point more talented players could do more with that opportunity.

Still, it's the bad team phenomenon. A hockey team isn't going to get shut out 82 times a year no matter how bad they are. Someone is going to score even if they're no good and they'll likely have what appears to be a decent statistical season as a result. Florida cashed in on that for a decade by trading guys like Jokinen, Bouwmeester and Booth. Washington will likely experience something similar with Ovi.

I am less down on Rathbone than others but he's a puck mover that seems to struggle with decision making speed at the NHL level. I'm not sure what the Pens expect here given that Friedman seems to be at least NHL stop gap level.

I'd prefer the NHL slightly overhyped Bedard and made his games an event, as opposed to McDavid's rookie year which they gave all the excitement of a shameful family secret. It's maybe a bit much to have a Bedard watch blog, but cmon at least they're recognizing he exists and is something special. He's a cool player that does exciting stuff in a flashy way. The NBA isn't being quiet about Wembanyama, why should the NHL be any different about Bedard?

Also his name sounds like he's a pokemon and that has to count for something.
