since 2020 I had been basically continuously job hunting until finally landing something that seemed sick in 2022. state job with bad pay but great benefits and maybe something I could do for a long time but my boss was such a psycho that I immediately got to job hunting again. It is a miserable grind.

I'm free now finally and it feels good. Good luck to all the job hunters it is a really demoralizing process at basically every step. I had two different jobs go through a 2nd round of interviews and then just ghost me completely. 2!!! Didn't even respond to my emails being like please just tell me no so I know wtf is going on and can plan.

I've also had an org call me 6 months after a first interview and invite me in for another interview lol. I did not trust that poo poo for a second I bet somebody got the job and then quit within 3 months. I'm not a computer toucher though it seems like that industry is way more bloated and precarious

if i had to estimate i've put out at least 2500+ applications. 85-90% yield zero response of any kind, even automated. from that i've had roughly 40-50 interviews in total, maybe a little more. usually at least 1-3 "active" process at any given time, with "active" being in quotes because they almost universally move slowly.

the average interview is 5 steps with one week between each. the longest probably went 6-7 weeks before a rejection. only two companies kept their entire process under two weeks. both ended in rejection. to my knowledge, one of those never filled the role and pulled it down. another company went 4-5 weeks before asking me for free work, and i told them to gently caress off unless they pay me. they've yet to fill the role.

i'm finishing up a process this week and i'd say it's a tossup as to whether they make me an offer. i'll likely know by the end of the week. when we got to the point of salary expectations, i undercut their bottom end of budget by 10k because i need a job and i have no right to really complain about how much money it is, as it would still be more than i made previously. any final advantage i can get against other hypothetical candidates is critical.

i can admit i've hosed up in some interviews and have strived to make improvements which hopefully yields a reward. but in all my years, i've never had anywhere near this level of difficulty. ghost jobs are real, budgets are all over the place, and nothing makes sense any more, if it ever did.

triple sulk posted:

normally i'd never do this, but it's still a lot of money and they may very well just hit the bottom of the range. it's always easier to get a job when you have a job, too.

my gap is getting way too long and it's loving hard to keep going like this

I just landed a state job after looking since graduating in April 2022. After a while, I just focused on government/university positions because those were the only ones getting back to me with actual, nonshitty positions. It also felt like every private job posting was soulless and outright lying to me, whereas gov't postings have to be dry and straightforward. The hiring process did take 3 months however, but at least I don't feel like I'm being hiring soley on my interview skills or on some gut feeling or or the firmness of my handshake or whatever by the person in charge of hiring.

Some people told me it be a good job to have for a few years before looking but I'd rather pull out my toenails before job searching again for at least 5 years. This time around was the worst by far in every conceivable way.

I had to RTO so I have been looking around for something new because I hate the commute. poo poo sucks, why is Workday so bad. Why do I gotta create a million Workday accounts. Why do they not just have one unified account. Also I've had plenty of interviews that I thought went well, they'd say they would get back to me in a few days and a week later they got nothing and won't return my emails.

all the jobs that I had that didn't make me want to kill myself were obtained through nepotism. make acquaintances. A shitload of them. not just people in the industry you're interested in. loving anybody.

i got a job through my dentist who knew a guy. I got another through a taxi driver who drove me home one time cause he knew a guy and gave me his card.

that or a govt job, idk.

welp, cya
