I grew up in the church (preacher's kid) so I've been hating religion for like forty three years.

I'm so lucky to have grown up in a 100% religion free family.

Grandparents on my Dad's side had a big religious blowout: He was Protestant, she was Catholic,
and both families disowned them when they got married. So they stopped being religious, passed that on to their kids, and then onto my family.

Thanks, you long dead idiots!

How should kids be taught to handle suffering?

Tell them to pray for things to get better!

Gotcha, real answer is that it was all part of god’s great plan!

I have come to discourse on the profound inequities of the American political system.

I don't think spirituality is necessarily bad. Look, you gotta one drat hard-core atheist to look at a universe composed entirely of randomness and go 'there absolutely no way there anything else happening". I think the very facts of life engender spirituality in people. A reverent wonder for existence is not, necessarily I believe, a bad thing.

It's when loving evil motherfuckers take advantage of this reverent wonder for existence to gently caress children, murder others with impunity, and force people to dress and act in the most stilted inhuman ways imaginable that my blood boils. Religion is full stop evil. There is no act of cruelty no person empowered by the belief that his imaginary God is cool with it won't do. Rape, murder, robbery, genocide, literally nothing is outside the bounds of Religion as a whole.

Spirituality? Fine, acceptable, even normal. Religion? Evil. Pure loving evil.

Hey, it's me, the universe is just random poo poo happening.
I don't think there's some grand plan of it, I'd prefer to imagine we just live in the MiB marbles and those marbles are in a bigger marble, indefinitely.

It probably helps I grew up religious, my father was at one point a church leader. So when I snapped out of all the nasty awful poo poo happening and culting I just felt the more opposed to those people I was, the better.

I've always viewed religion as an amplifier, particularly for the devout. It can drive people to be extremely kind and productive on many fronts but it can also amplify their cruelty and hatred. I also view religion as a way for people to cope with life from day to day, to believe there's a reason that their child is sick or that there's a reason there's a drought. It's a lot easier on the mind to believe there's a reason for thing rather than some random chance.

It's also important to separate religion from the institution. the institutions are usually pretty hosed. Much like capitalism, it's just a system, not good or evil but in the hands of powerful institutions it can be made to make us all suffer.

I mean this is the truth of it. Even your friendly, genuine nice person priest - can you genuinely believe they didn't know about the reams of abuse and cruelty that was provably going on, everywhere, all the time for decades? Can you really convince yourself they were clueless and not just protecting their job or making psychotic 'how much good can I do by staying' calculations?

That said once you start you also have to apply this thinking to everyone in entertainment and most medics too

That's why paganism is the best religion. Worship of nature, the seasons, life itself.

It's alright to have faith in God but when you bend to their rules and their loving lies, that's when I start to have pity on you!

My mom took us to church on the big holidays only and for some reason she was surprised when she asked me as a late teen whether I believed in god and I said no. My dad was raised in catholic school but is more of a "spiritual" type of person. Anyway the church my mom took us to was methodist and actually not bad for being in the South (western NC). I'm pretty sure I remember a sermon from when I was pretty young where they talked about gay people and how they should be loved like anyone else. I remember my grandma making me memorize the lord's prayer so she would buy me a bike. That's pretty much my exposure to religion. I don't hate on it necessarily I think some people get benefits from going to church, I was always jealous of the kids that had church friends. They also tend to do a lot of charity work for the poor and stuff like that. But anyone that preaches hate or judges others can gently caress right off.

I think if you want to be religious you should have to come up with your own religion. You know, do drugs until you become convinced that what you're experiencing is real, and then go from there.

edit: adopting someone else's religion is like cheating off somebody's test in school, you should have to do the work yourself.
