That's pretty much where his design stuck beyond proportional changes going on. E: Actually, yoshi's island looks like it has the shell. so that might be the earlier use but a lot of things changed design wise after that.

I think often it's the same yoshi, the green one, but that one is also not always the same yoshi. Very cool convention to have the species and name be yoshi, no confusion whatsoever. There are named yoshis, like boshi. You could ask the same thing of toad, there's the main toad, but also the species toad.
