That was a really weird deal so I wasn't sure how to handle it. Instead of picking up his fifth-year option (worth ~$20 million), they signed him to a one-year extension worth "up to" $22.5 million. I figured that was basically a wash with still being on his rookie contract.

I blame the defense. If they'd gotten better field position on a couple of those drives they might have scored scored 3, even 6 points.

That's just Jones and Watson, right? Well, I guess it would've also been Russ before the season started and he compiled some nice-looking stats (although I still contend he's a below-average QB).

Yeah it's not a franchise killer. They're stuck with him next year, then they can cut him although it would be painful. The real out is after year 3.

Watson is obviously in a class of his own. But giving Jones that contract basically punts two seasons which isn’t eternal damnation or anything but should have the GMs seat scorching hot.

Not that anyone could make much out of the pass catchers they have. But the GM is responsible for that trash heap too so not exactly an excuse.

To be fair signing a guy because he was your QB when you finally got to the playoffs is the logical end of the rings argument

Docjowles
Apr 9, 2009

Yeah I can see the argument either way. They could have looked at the bulk of his tape, lolled heartily at a holdout threat and drafted Levis or something. But I also get that dumpstering the guy who just won a playoff game for you is going to be a tough sell to the Maras and WFAN callers.

Tagging Jones and giving Barkley a 3 year deal with easy outs feels like the right emotionless game theory move.
