Sentai being modern day ADV explains a LOT about their dubs being the way they are. That said the Sentai dub of Vinland Saga season 1 is legitimately fantastic and for me personally it is a lot better than the Netflix dub. I was also happy to see that the transition to Crunchyroll kept the majority of the Sentai cast. Unfortunately with Mike Haimoto has the the sexual assault allegations against him and likely won't be back for Season 3 as Thorfinn whenever Mappa gets around to it in 2045. Animaze was the best dubbing studio of the 90s and early 2000s and I miss them. Arc Hammer fucked around with this message at 23:05 on Nov 5, 2023 |

What's Ocean Group up to these days outside of some cartoon work? Are they out of the anime business cuz they're union and most of the work has moved south?

When I was going through my Ghost in the Shell SAC rewatch it really dawned on me how good that dub is. There really isn't anyone I'd recast. 2nd Gig got even better. I also saw the dubbed version of the Laughing Man compilation film that Ocean worked on. David Kaye's version of Batou is uncanny in how similar he plays it to Epcar.

Like I said, Sentai's dub for Vinland Saga S1 is really drat good. I like Kirk Thornton just fine but when it comes to Askeladd I really think David Wald's raspy voice works for the character. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TDjePCCgNSw A lot of times they miss but when they hit it's great.

I'm not really gonna fault Yong that much. Yes it does sound bad, but a jobs a job and nobody is going to turn down a chance like his when it's offered to them. The casting crew should take more heat for having the final say, and I'd have to listen to more of the game to determine if it's an outlier of miscasting or if everyone sounds bad because the English audio production didn't give a poo poo

On other topics. You know who doesn't get enough credit? Patrick Seitz. He's rarely cast in leading roles but he's usually excellent barring some exceptions (My Senpai is Annoying he just sounded off). If you need a guy with a deep voice he's your man but that doesn't stop him from having quite a good range. Recently he killed it as Handler Walter in Armored Core and he oversaw the dub for Pluto. For me though, anyone who can pull off an Ork voice is golden. Kaptin Bludflagg is a treasure: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u0vDQWMJNbE Other great anime dubbers doing Orks include all three Dobson brothers, Keith Ferguson, Brian Drummond, Alan Shearman, Robin Atkin Downes and of course Scott McNeill. If you can do an Ork, I'm gonna like you in most roles. Arc Hammer fucked around with this message at 16:26 on Nov 10, 2023 |

What are your thoughts on celebrity voiceovers? I tend to be skeptical of them unless the actors in question have an established track record in voice acting. Someone like Mark Hamill or Keith David showing up I'm fine with but other times I raise my eyebrows. To me it feels like an extension of the 90s shift in Disney films to use celebrity voices as a selling point regardless of how good the performance actually is. Appropriate considering Disney's association with many of the Ghibli dubs which are the frontrunners for grabbing a celebrity and tossing them into an anime with varying degrees of success. It can be especially jarring when you fill out the rest of your cast with industry staples. Steamboy has an overall excellent dub with Patrick Stewart and Alfred Molina going full ham with Manchester accents but then you've got Anna Paquin trying and failing to sound like a ten year old English boy. I'm surprised Riz Ahmed was poor in that one. I thought he sounded pretty good in Nimona and could lend himself well to voiceover. I just consider some casting choices for celebrities to be weird and down to name recognition more than to find a fit for the role. Going back to Ghibli Billy Crudup and Claire Danes aren't exactly bad as Ashitaka and San in Princess Mononoke but they're vastly outperformed by Keith David, Billy Bob Thornton and John DiMaggio. Sometimes it feels like a celebrity casting is good by accident rather than by intent. Arc Hammer fucked around with this message at 18:46 on Nov 14, 2023 |

drat that WAS Dean Stockwell wasn't it? It's been years since I've watched that movie and well before I'd clued into the fact I'd seen Dean Stockwell absolutely everywhere without knowing his name. Yeah he was pretty flat as old Tim Drake while going up against Hamill at his absolute peak Joker voice.

You could even make a case for liking the Big Green voice actor for Goku. He sounds appropriately meathead-y. I miss Kirby Morrow. All of the Ocean Dub Gokus were pretty good but I liked him best. Also Brad Swaile made a pretty good adult Gohan. Arc Hammer fucked around with this message at 17:57 on Nov 17, 2023 |

If anything he's mostly one of those kinds of actors who are overly protective of their roles and considering how touchy Toei is on the best of days he'd rather toe the line than risk jeopardizing his big name role.

They're Canadian and unionized and the anime work has all gone to Texas. Ocean Group probably makes more money doing cartoons and distributing international releases than they ever did dubbing for anime.

It might be poor implementation of AI voices but to me it sounds more like a Source Filmmaker or YouTube Poop style stitch dub where existing voice lines are spliced together.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BcBZgfIMCVE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s3qUEzNXl_M It's interesting to compare the two versions of this scene. Aleks Le's version is word for word from the manga panels but Mike Haimoto's performance also deserves praise and I applaud the Sentai/Crunchyroll dub for its script. Both performances strike at the heart of the scene and it's rare to have two contemporary dubs where both are this good in their own ways. Shame that Haimoto had to be a sex pest and this is likely the last time he'll voice Thorfinn. Arc Hammer fucked around with this message at 03:00 on Nov 28, 2023 |

What dubbing studio was used for Undead Unluck? It's licensed on Hulu/Disney, right? Do they have an in-house dub group the way Crunchyroll has or the way Sentai is for HiDive?
