You see the names are ironic, because Greenland is icy, while Iceland is lavaey.

Whole thing is petering out and has already lost most of it's power. Months of buildup, explosive start, mostly over in basically a day. Could still re-emerge at any other point in the same crack.

Hold onto your asses. Big earthquake 30 minutes ago, the ground is rising rapidly near Grindavík, might be another eruption in the next few hours.* *Or three months from now because geology is silly.

Grindavík is being evacuated because everything points to another eruption being imminent. Probably in the same place as last time but could possibly be close or even in the middle of Grindavík.

Eruption in Grímsvötn in Vatnajökull, the largest glacier in Europe, also seems likely in the near future which means if both volcanoes erupt in the next few days it will be the first time in recorded history that there are two volcanoes erupting at the same time in Iceland.

I would have expected live footage of a lava flow opening up a couple hundred feet from a populated town to be more dramatic. I mean, I'm not saying I wanted the town to burn to the ground or the residents to be forced to outrun coursing tides of lava. I'm just saying that the pictures would have been cool.

E: I can't get the drat thing to work, but essentially, you can go to the feed above and go back a few hours. you can go back about 5 hours and its twighlight, and it looks bad, then go forwards and its "ohhhh, nooooooo" I dunno if this is going to work, but even if it looks like not much is happening, its happening. staberind fucked around with this message at 21:22 on Jan 14, 2024 |

The quakes in Iceland tend to be milder because it's a constructive plate boundary.
