I prefer Tobe! Gundam because it's got more of the funky bass guitar that I love about the show's soundtrack.

The transition from original gundam's OP into the gundam opening narration describing the political situation as zeon war crimes half the human population in the background is simply too perfect

maybe this isn't quite what you're going for, but the US TV OP for "Mobile Suit Gundam" shows how you can create a totally different, and vastly more dynamic, intro for a series that actually includes the action and main characters, even if the underlying footage itself is rather primative by modern standards:

Compare the original, which, while a whole minute longer is mostly just drawings of the main characters and robots on generic type backgrounds:

The original MSG intro gives less of a feel for what the show is frankly than the original 1960s "Speed Racer" intro, which at least included some amount of the cross country driving with lots of enemies in silly costumes that actually makes up the bulk of the show. And MSG was made over decade after that!

The opposite of this is when Japan did much more dynamic openings for the X Men tv show compared to the american version.

On the subject of Gundam, I still think Just Communication from Gundum Wing is pretty drat hard to top:

I love how all the Gundam OPs and EDs exemplify the duality of the series. The openings are all "War is AWESOME!" up beat kick rear end tracks, while the endings are all "War sucks, why are we doing this?" sombre meditative tracks.

Trying to find a way to word this was tricky but I think I know why I bounce off a lot of OPs. Have you ever modded a video game to give it different model textures or visual reskins? But it still ends up looking and moving the same way because you're still using the same underlying animation skeleton or model assets. That's the way I feel about a lot of anime OPs. That "Every Anime OP Ever" video rings truer with every new season where it's a new coat of paint over the same skeleton framework of a standardized OP. Pair that visual repetition with the standardized OP musical beats and its no wonder they can end up feeling interchangeable.

This doesn't mean I dislike them. Bravern's OP isn't doing anything new or innovative but it was still my favourite one from last season because what it does it does exceptionally well. But at the same time it does mean that I like to gravitate towards more unique OPs just to see something different. Edgerunners OP is right in the first post that's a good example of taking a different tack. I want more of that; not more of Edgerunners specifically, but more OPs doing their own thing rather than more variations on a format. Change up the game a bit.

And the ironic part is that while I type this out I'm trying to think of some more examples of OPs that break the mold and I'm drawing a blank instead.

For this year, I think Sentai Daishikkaku aka Go Go Loser Ranger's OP is great. Visually interesting. Good song that goes well with the visuals. Representative of the themes present in the story. It has really strong direction.
