I've always felt that African American erasure from records and depictions of the Wild West era (1865-1895) is a wider issue that many people realise. After the Civil War there was a huge influx of freed slaves from SE states into the frontier regions where they could claim land and start new jobs and roughly 1/3 of the cowboys working the Wild West were African American. That era was also pretty foundational to the US's sense of self & history, especially via Old West TV shows and movies which were a hugely formative factor in how the American people see themselves and their values, and those values and ideas of self have trickled down throughout popular media ever since. African Americans were a huge part of that era but most of the thousands upon thousands of old movies and TV shows which depicted that era completely erased them and that's only started to be reversed in recent times. It's yet another example of "The Good Old Days" which many conservatives yearn for which only really ever existed in classic media which badly skewed and whitewashed the reality of the actual times.

Having said that, I don't think that creating fake photorealistic images will actually help that at all and might actually muddy the waters and make it even harder to acknowledge the reality of the historical situation

the nexus of so many right wingers entire world view is the type of imagery they are tuggin' to. some subservient figment of imagination cooking in a modest dress? or should she be wearing some kind of pornographic french maid parody of that? gamer bikini armor babes? is liking short hair gay? is hanging around women too much going to make you too feminine? is having sex with a woman gay? am i gay?

wow! this poo poo sucks!

never mind that it's written and conceived like a loving US Bank ad, it 100% confirms that "only slow motion because no movement actually works with this" critique

also the main character is different in every shot. seems like a drawback, but what do I know I've only been doing film and tv for 20 years, i'm sure the tech guys are right and this is what everybody wants

I am not advocating for the goodness of AI, just remarking on its capabilities. I deeply hate it and it's poisoning the well for creative jobs and creativity in general.

then why do you sound like those guys jumping into the press as soon as their poo poo released, doing home alone hands saying "oh no! oh dread! we've done an oopsie, we've created an AI so powerful it will destroy all society and rule over us as a god! give me some more money so I can program some ethics in before it's too late! and more money because I swear any day now it'll replace all mental work!" it doesn't do poo poo even related to creativity.

guess what, it's not poisoning the well for creative jobs if you actively, vehemently reject and spit on anything people try to expose to you.

you don't have to talk at all, ever, about the technical capabilities and potential of the machine powered by the suffering of children being born into the world right now. that's scientific fact. you just have to react like a human being to it

ive been using topaz gigapixel for photo restoration the last ~5 years & im certain those are artifacts of AI upscaling from too small/poor quality source images

Fucks sake. That explains it better than just whole-cloth fakes being put in by the director/editor and okayed by bosses, by lawyers checking image rights, etc. Still bullshit and unnecessary. Audiences who watch historical docs accept blurry old photos if that's all there is. For fucks sake. I edit documentaries and this puts what we do to shame. We really work hard not to get one over for story's sake and some huge loving streaming platform throws this up and makes us all look like chancers.
