I was in an MLM / business cult having me do door-to-door office supply sales to random businesses about a decade ago. It felt like a regular job until I had a family member say "this is clearly a pyramid scheme you idiot". Then a few years later I had a roommate try to join the same cult and I had to talk her out of it.
