Hey it wasn't mentioned that I saw but I think it's worth mentioning here: the original FSN is getting an official English release/a remaster for Steam and Switch! Coming this year, supposedly.

That's a pretty good video game if you haven't played it!!!!

Yeah, we actually have an episode recorded where I remark that we're at the 20th anniversary and everyone's expecting a remake of some description, and afterwards Coolguye told me he sort of silently scoffed at the notion, and then the next day it was announced. This also happened with the Squats in 40K.

Yep, I rolled my eyes at it because the old VNs like that are such a staggering undertaking and I didn't see an upside to doing it when the Fate franchise already had so much support they DIDN'T have to pay for from fans. There's lots of reasons to go back and do it regardless, but if your goal is money, it wouldn't even be in your top 5 things to do. Maybe not even your top 10.

And, well, here we are. I'd be dramatic about it, but if the universe keeps wanting to prove me wrong on my thorny cynicism I'll keep up the curmudgeonly streak for the good of humanity. I'm enjoying the precepts of this game enough that I'm pretty liable to pick up FSN when it comes out, though that depends on what else is going on in my life when it does.

Actually, while we're on the topic, does anyone have an approximate word count for FSN? I kinda want to compare it to Umineko, which I am... still rather enjoying being dragged through from a setbuilding perspective, but the sheer deluge of WORDS in that loving thing makes me want to stab myself sometimes.

And a sight less than Umineko, which is 1.1 million.

That said, at that many words, I'll admit to being pretty suspicious. It's one thing if you have a lot to say and a lot of ground to cover. It's entirely another if you just stand there and spend 10 words every time 1 would've done alright. That's the primary bone to pick that I have ended up with on Umineko - it's got quite good stagecraft, but the writer is so windy that important and impactful scenes are routinely ruined by the characters' complete inability to say something once, rather than 4 times.

War and Peace is 580k words, for a fiction-to-fiction comparison. I'll need to do some sampling of FSN to check what I'm getting into before I commit too heavily, I think.

Unfortunately, Fate does have a lot of words in it for the sake of words, especially when it comes to magibabble. This is not be helped by F/SN's narrator (Emiya Shirou) being in the same position as Iori where he knows the vaguest hints of the magical part of the setting but needs to have everything in any kind of detail explained to him at length.

It is really good, but it also follows the old joke about RPG writers making a game so they can tell you about their campaign setting. At least this one is based on the revised version that doesn't have the h-scenes any more, so you don't have to suffer through those.

is that 820k mark the revised one or the original? H-scenes are, you know, lurid in every sense of the term by necessity. Even if there's only an occasional one, at a work that size that's probably -50k words right there.

sirtommygunn
Mar 7, 2013

Also how much of that 820k are the copy/pasted segments from bad end routes? There's also a lot of "hang out with Saber/Rin/Sakura/joke option" that then lead into a much longer scene that is identical no matter which option you picked.

The earliest claims I could find were from 11-12 years ago... which is still post-Realta Nua release. So no real way to tell. My guess is that a bunch of incidental extra stuff was added in the new versions so the word count remains roughly the same.

sirtommygunn's right that a bunch of this is obfuscated from repeated segments, but now that I think about it, the biggest thing that nobody's talked about is that the game is split along three different routes, so it's more like three very closely related 250k novels stacked together in a trench coat than a single 750k novel, if that helps.

Rody One Half
Feb 18, 2011

There's absolutely no WAY that a normal reading of FSN (getting all 5 endings+Last Episode) is anywhere near as long as Umineko, especially skipping scenes that repeat from one route to another like "this is what a grail war is!" exposition. MAYBE that's if you do the 40 bad ends clean up for the bonus scene thing, but even then that is hard to imagine.

He's apparently called that because he was permitted to use the same family name as the Ming Emperor. Of course, Koxinga isn't actually the emperor's name; that word means something like 'Lord of the Imperial Surname.'
I don't know if this has anything to do with this particular gentleman, but there are rumors in Akasaka that a flute can be heard playing in the Chinese residence on nights when the moon is beautiful. They say the flutist must be a strikingly beautiful woman or man. If it's true, I'd like to take a look for myself.

A selection of various thoughts:

-I love how Zheng's magical communication hologram somehow has buffering and framerate issues in-universe

-Gilgamesh is one of those characters who has a... wide range of characterizations in Fate stuff, ranging from kinda one-dimensional misogynist supervillain, to imperious "the world is full of curs unfit to be ruled, I will cull the herd" megalomaniac, to drunk bored hedonist who will kill you for being too annoying, to brokenly powerful ally who spoils the plot if you select him as your Servant companion, to inspiring (if chronically overworked) monarch, to full-on comic relief "rich guy who will finance shenanigans." He shows up a lot because he's the Oldest Hero, and in the metaphysics of it all the oldest and most original a thing is, the closer it is to the platonic ideal of its concept, and therefore the more mystically powerful, so Gil is great if you want a BULLSHIT POWERFUL guy.

-Aria talking about Iori filling her magical energy requirements is almost certainly a "mana transfer" joke, a thing that was certainly canon in the original VN but I don't think has actually come up in-universe since except as a meme. That aspect of the magical worldbuilding kinda fell by the wayside, largely because the franchise grew beyond its "VN written in the early 2000s and thus contractually obligated to have porn in it" origins, and partly because the original F/SN had some of the worst sex scenes ever written. Not in terms of being especially offensive or depraved or whatever, but because Kinoko Nasu's wiring style has been likened to a Japanese E E Cummings and nobody has ever wanted to read his really bad sex scenes and their associated shellfish analogies.

Yanagawara Protects Edo from Ogres
Did you know there's a place full of willows along the Kanda River called Yanagiwara Embankment? Apparently those willows were planted around two hundred years ago. That's all the way back when Ota Douken had the old Edo Castle built!
Looking from the castle, that embankment would be to the northeast - an unlucky direction of evil spirits. Yanagimori Shrine was supposedly built there to welcome the Fushimi Inari deity all the way from Kyoto, and the willow trees were planted to ward off evil.
Willows don't break under the wind, so we humans should also learn to bend like the willow tree.

Whitebait or Kudzutai?
Have you ever visited Uogashi in Nihonbashi? Fish, fish, and more fish line the stores from front to back. Just one look will have you smacking your lips.
What draws the most eyes, though, is either the beautifully translucent whitebait or the sea bream with its shiny scales. Both used to be luxury items that us commoners could never eat.
When the great Ieyasu was still around, catching whitebait for any purpose other than offering them to the Shogun was forbidden. Sea bream caught using special fishing nets made in Futtsu were called Kudzutai and became offerings to the Shogun as well.
Now that such delicacies have become available to folks like us, I'd say things have changed for the better.

The DLC is rather fortunately activated similar to a digression, so there's no weird sort of out of place "HERE IS AN EVENT" thing that forces us to do some cutscenes then get ignored for a new game+ cycle. So we'll have all the main game completed before we need to worry about looking into that.

This turns out to be a mistake, but not one without benefit. As they track a snake, perhaps it's the aid of a hard-working hound that will help them succeed?

Time to meet another very well known Fate character that has been with the franchise since the beginning, and I'm pretty sure Coolguye has already figured this one out.

You should go see for yourself sometime, but Zojo-ji is surrounded by small wood-shingled dwellings that the monks use for their dormitories. Moreover, the scenery can be enjoyed across all four seasons, so Edo's citizens also have fond memories of their own.
Spring brings us the cherry blossoms of Gotenyama. In the summer, people gather on the night of July 26th to watch the moon for Tenno Festival. Kaian-ji becomes a vibrant sea of red leaves in the fall. And in winter, you can enjoy the bounties of the sea. I think you, dear reader, must have been to Shinagawa several times already, yes?

They don't really ever say, but it is worth noting that the buff spell Aria casts on Iori also casts a charm spell on enemies around her rendering them standing stupidly for a little bit. So she's probably able to befuddle less protected minds (though kids seem able to see the fox too so it might be related to a belief in mystics).
