Phew, finally caught up! Saw the LP some time ago but I eventually got the game and decided to finish it to prevent spoilers first, which I did! It was fun seeing Coolguye guess and react at all the silly Fate stuff, and the history talk was pretty interesting (since for example I knew poo poo about Zheng or Three Kingdoms stuff besides character names). Also lmao I never noticed the Rogue Lancer goof around his identity. Can't wait for the wild stuff.

Also, sorry if it is a bit off-topic, but I was wondering, how spoilery is the first DLC scenario? Was gonna do NG+ and weighted getting the Season Pass to have some variety on NG+. For context I did Rat for Rogue Saber's digressions.

It's okay, was mostly asking for anyone reading the thread who did do the DLC. I can just work on playing since for maximum POWER you need to do multiple full NG+ anyways.

IIRC the overall plot explicitly takes place in an alternate timeline but specific comments by Boss and other people, although vague and never direct with only one exception, assume you knowing every lategame reveal.

EDIT: You access it by a golden digression symbol on the map so it's fairly self contained. It's split into several campaigns with some of them locked behind plot progression and others behind completing campaigns so I don't think you'll get any explicit spoilers, just the iykyk kind because Boss is Boss.

Yeah, that's what I wanted to know. As mentioned I've only seen Rat so I guess I could get spoilers about details from Snake? I guess I should hold off for a bit then.

There's two cool trivia I wanted to talk about the game's music. I solemnly swear they have no spoilers, and I'm polsyfying that poo poo to prevent related videos:

-We've heard Tamamo Aria's theme, By Your Side, in some of her scenes. This theme is a pretty direct remix of the original Tamamo no Mae's theme, which makes sense... but the fun thing is Tamamo's theme itself is a remix of none other than... the theme for the Extras menu in the original Fate Stay Night. Now that's making good use of what you already have.

-Technically not ingame music, but during the battle where you can control Musashi, her Heavy 3 Attack, the Earth one, makes her say "Ittou Ryoran!" or Ittou Ryoudan, which is probably a reference to the homonymous song, which is kind of her theme song in FGO since it was used in the promotional materials for her story chapter. Mostly cause while Ittou Ryodan is an actual expression about slashing, Ittou Ryoran is a pun about slashing and meeting strong folks or something. Mostly mentioning it cause I start humming the song every time she says it :v:

Obviously Coyett is a good enough mage to corrupt proof of her existence. In Fate you can absolutely blame the LP curse on a mage who's pissed off at you, given there's one who specializes in cursed e-mail chains but they're real.

Nice pirate trivia there, but also lol at how you went out of your way to use every Fate Blackbeard descriptor except the one that sums his early characterization: 4channer :v:

Does coolguye have any opinions on Rogue Archer? Besides being annoying to fight (real) and using the dumbest method to test for trsutworthyness (also real).

Pfft, you call that a l a r g e b u d d h a ? HERE'S a l a r g e b u d d h a :

I know it wasn't built until the 20th century, I just liked the joke because both are located in Kamakura and I actually visited both of them in my trip to Japan yet I didn't recognize it in-game :v:

And agree on the opinion about Lord El Melloi II Case Files: despite being a central part of world building Fate never delves too deep into the Mage's Association and it's some real worldbuilding, specially when you realize Nasuverse mages aren't amoral monsters who eat puppies, they are morally loose shut-in nerds. And the Clock Tower isn't the typical magic school you see in urban fantasy, it's absolutely a college with older students, faculties, lecturers embroiled in petty politics or desperate attempts for getting more funding and students running betting pools on who will win "sexiest teacher of the year" to buy oil fields which is all secretly a plot from the head honchos to gather which teachers have clout in the school. You know, usual college stuff.

Also I'd watch an episode of coolguye getting shown Servant designs and trying to guess who they are, cause overall Fate never goes for mediums, it's either "that's loving genius", "that's loving dumb" or both. Except Saber who is a perfect gremlin who has never done anything wrong in their life (besides murder).

Boss is indeed the best in the world. They should maje a game about him-oh, they did in Fate EXTRA CCC :v:

And Rogue Berserker is just a joy to play and cathartic after getting beat up by him. He's also really strong cause they gave him Super Amor so you're playing a walking wrecking ball.

But the best part of the episode was (don't look Coolguye) I actually lmfao irl when Coolguye made the chilli dog joke. Even if Rogue Lancer is kinda obvious thanks to that skill oopsie I don't know if Coolguye was aware of the joke he made :allears:

As a resident Fate nerd, I'd like to clarify vampires are very much A Thing in Fate still. The big deal is that in Fate Humanity is stronger and thus vampires are weaker and in the sister series Tsukihime vampires are stronger while Humanity is weaker and there's a coalition of the top 27 vampires and Servants can't be summoned outside of guest characters in fighting games.

El Melloi-II Case Files does feature 2 of that top 27 as vampires for example, one owns the train where they hold auctions for magic eyes and another has his casino yacht. They are just weaker and the coalition doesn't exist.

Asterite34 posted:

So, a brief explanation of The Root, since it's come up:

You know Plato?

You know the Realm of Platonic Forms?

It's basically just that.

The explicit goal of every proper Mage is to find a way to physically enter the supernal realm of idealized concepts and hack the source code of reality, presumably toward some benevolent ends like ending all human suffering intrinsic to the current paradigm of material existence or something like that. Ends SO benevolent that literally any horrible actions can be justified in the pursuit of that goal. Hence Mages generally being kinda dicks about stuff, they tend to consider themselves to have moral carte blance as long as they succeed eventually.

Naturally, you can't just waltz in there, the World quite sensibly has rather a lot of safeguards and defenses against random jerks re-writing the Akashic Records, so Mages have historically attempted various convoluted grandiose schemes to Ocean's Eleven this poo poo and break in. (spoilers if you ever intend to actually play Fate/Stay Night) One of these is... the Holy Grail War itself, an elaborate ritual to force open a path to the Root, with the magic genie wish for the winner being more of a bonus to entice more mundanely self-interested dupes into joining in. At least that's how it went in F/SN proper, I dunno what all this Waxing Moon poo poo is about.

One tiny correction in that magi don't usually have plans to use the Root. They just want to reach it for the sake of reaching it, despite the fact nobody knows what happens afterwards. Also while more morally muddled than most they usually don't inmediately go for the mass massacre option if possible, if only because magecraft gets weaker the more widespread it is and because being hunted by authorities means less time to do research.

Not that magi are saints, there's one whose magecraft consists of eating baby souls to keep himself alive younger and only does it sparingly not out of morals but because turns out that poo poo fucks up your soul, who knew :v:

Anyways, the big takeaway of this is "Boy whoever has to explain to the Tokugawa that the giant snake that thrashed a district was a necessary risk and also make up an excuse to hide the ritual must be tering their hair apart".

Something to point out is that sometines the Casters who IRL had nothing to do with magic or occultism do have some relationship with magecraft in Fate. Mozart for example was acquainted with mages. So sometimes they do know magecraft comolimenting their legends.

But yeah, otherwise Caster is usually the kitchen sink of "where do we put this historical figure" because artists are generally qualified. The only broader one is canonically Berserker because you can actually put figures who are Heroic Spirits but don't really qualify for the other classes into that one, but it comes with massive issues if their sanity isn't drained every once in a while cause Berserkers go berserk.

Caster tends to be the most wildly varied class because it basically can be summed up as 'This person's big thing is being Intellectual', so in addition to your classic magic users, you also have Poets, Artists, Musicians, Scientists, and Inventors counted amongst them, unless for whatever reason they also qualify for another class for whatever reason (Such as Nikola Tesla being an Archer because gently caress it, Imma shoot lightning at people).

Similarly, Riders as a class also tends to include a lot of Leaders of Men type character, even if they aren't strongly associated with having a mount. For example, Queen Medb of Celtic mythology is a Rider class Servant, and the flimsy justification they give for why is that she Rides Men.

And yes, In That Way.

I mean, Medb has a chariot pulled by bulls, even in IRL legends. She does kinda qualify even without the joke.

The most egregious case on a Rider I'd argue is Andromeda, Perseus' wife, who qualifies as a Rider because... she was chained to a rock. Perseus turned the monster that was gonna eat her into stone. Andromeda's legend is "chained to a rock" so no matter what she has a chain wrapped around a rock. Ergo, she's chained to the monster that is now a rock and can slam him into enemies.

EDIT: Although to be fair, Fate does add a cool twist in that her parents weren't actually trying to sacrifice her to appease the gods, it was a trap Andromeda set up to try and kill the monster, it just so happened Perseus saved her first.

Jeanne here was real fun back in the days of guessing Servants because like, yeah, she's absolutely Jeanne in looks, and the Edge makes her look like Alter, but the deal is Alter is an unique FGO existance because Jeanne as a Saint isn't supposed to be alterable, she does not have an evil side on her. So there's still that mystery to be solved!

And BTW, this is more for a heads up: the second part of the DLC came out. It's a pretty self-contained story without any main story spoilers besides some foreshadowing of the third ending so it can perfectly slot into the NG+ playthrough.

An important detail you missed out on the Servantverse is that not only Heroic Spirits can exist permanently as a Servant... EVERYONE is a Servant. Even the random Joe over there. Everyone is superhuman and can come back from death cause they're spirit beings. And the best part? According to Nasu's cosmology, this is one of humanity's good ends. The Star Wars parody is what we should strive for (because we got out of Mama Earth's basement and surpassed death).

On that topic, a funny detail about Calamity Jane is that despite coming from a joke verse, she's not that outlandish besides knowing how to operate a spaceship and being goofy. Her Noble Phantasm is Dead Man's Hand though from some reason, despite being a thing from another Wild West figure?

I was laughing at Coolguye calling Odysseus a wife guy because, while IRL there are versions of the Odyssey that have Odysseus have children with both Circe and Calypso, in Fate Odysseus was effectively a Wife Guy. Hard agree, I'm mad we can't discuss any of that until somewhere around 2027 where we get to the final ending :v:

Also in retrospect... the Type Moon team must not have any hardcore Water Margin or even Suikoden fans, cause I'm pretty sure amongst the Chinese Servants, there are more Investidure of the Gods/Qing Dynasty figures than Water Margin + RotTK combined. Hell, even in RotTK we have mostly strategists, Lu Bu and Lu Bu. And Water Margin representation beyond Yan Qing requires at least Medium exposire to Fate Bullshit to not cry and/or laugh.

Yeah, my post about "Holy Grail Wars without overseer fuckery" was mostly a joke on how many of the big ones had some of that. The least affected would be EXTRA's Moon Cell War because the one loving poo poo up is a former Master, not the system who is actually impartial unless you are an NPC.

There's in background lore what's called Subspecies Grail Wars in some Fate timelines which are minor versions of the ritual where like, not all 7 Servants classes are summonned or the reward is just mana and not a wish or every Master has 2 Servants (and also it's a livestream), etc. The Waxing Moon Ritual can kinda be slotted into that as well.

The fun thing is it lead to lore bits where mages who use the internet actually made Holy Grail War wikis about the meta, like Assassins being too OP until people just decided to murder anyone who summons one, or how wars in Europe sometimes end before there's even a summoning because every Master killed each other over a catalyst for summoning Herakles :v:

Other fun points include Holmes gaslighting his colleagues on whether he was a real person or just a literary figure who never existed, only for renowed occultist and definitively real person Madame Helena Blavatsky to go "Dude, we went to the Himalayas together, wtf are you on about" and the fact most Sherlock Holmes stories in Fate are censored to hide magic involvement such as The Adventure of the Speckled Band actually being death by curses instead of the original (and that it's why spmetimes they have plot holes)

The dreadful realization that the Wife Guy Holy Grail War is an absolute possibility and it would be a massacre. Granted, you'd have to go with never seen but stated to be qualified alt classes like Caster Sigurd, Archer Rama and Assassin Lu Bu, unless you allow Husband Gals as well in which case it's easier. Or if you count the Phantom of the Opera as a wife guy.

Clearly Lu Bu qualifies for Assassin because he keeps killing the people he serves. The stealthy kill comes from the fact you do not pursue Lu Bu, therefore he can kill with impunity. QED.

(The canon reason is that Lu Bu is strong and famous enough to be summoned as everything but Saber and Caster. Like how Heracles is said to qualify for every class but Caster, except that was a long time ago and punchmages are real).
