receivers usually get a heads-up from the refs if they ask for one. I don't know if he did, but if he did then that is indeed some bullshit

nothing I've seen suggested he actually did though but of course I'm trying to avoid the conversation as much as I can

Ideally going forward they should help them lose, if anything

We've exposed a new minefield of content now that we know how they react when they lose. It'd be a shame to let these rants from Pat and Andy stay rare

It's a false flag operation. Toney is secretly on the take and is trying to take the heat of the refs.

I mean, Toney being a double agent against the Chiefs makes sense since he single-handedly hosed up that game against Detroit earlier this year

It's silly that a player can check with a ref if they're offsides to begin with, it isn't this highly technical thing just look at the loving ball. You've already got to figure out if your formation is legal?

I am a-okay with referees being a resource for players to check rules against in the moment.

It’s not illegal to be offsides before the play, it’s illegal to be offsides after the ball is snapped. Dudes way out on the perimeter might not have a clear view at where the ball is or where the spot officially is, checking with a ref is allowed for that reason.

The officiating response wasn’t “we didn’t tell him to get back on the right side of the ball so we flagged it” it was “he didn’t ask, so we didn’t tell him, and we flagged it.” They aren’t out there to babysit the players to make sure the game is clean, but referees across all sports are supposed to be the rule experts, why wouldn’t you use them as a resource as a player?

It happens all the time at professional levels of all games. Look how many times a baseball player specifies the strikezone with the plate umpire or, hell, as a mega nerd, a judge call in Magic: The Gathering comes to mind.

I feel like you're just asking for the exact problems you're getting right now with this whole thing. Might as well warn the QB when he's got less than 5 seconds on the play clock, or tell the coach when's a good time to call time out.

I've known some minor leaguers and according to them the extent of defining the strike zone is asking the ump if they're gonna be calling it that way the whole game. They're not waiting on the ump every pitch to tell them to crowd the plate because of how they're calling strikes.

There’s no problem happening right now because it was clearly a penalty and nobody told him it wasn’t going to be a penalty. It’s just some KC fans and players being dumb as hell.

Checking with the refs on some formation stuff is fine, they’ve got a better view of the entire line than players in formation.

This is the way the sport is though. I was checking with the refs if I was on the line from like 5th grade peewee ball to senior year. They do it in college, they do it in the NFL. It's hard to see looking sideways with blood rushing through your eyeballs about to run full speed in two seconds.
