X-Files was my first jump into fandom. I was around 19 when it came out and it was one of the only TV shows I made sure I was home to watch. I like the Monster of the week in season 1 but the finale and Scully's abduction in S02 hooked me in.

One of the first things I did when I got AOL was to start looking up stuff on X-Files. There I met other fans and spent lots of time in chat rooms. Soon I found my way to helping a new online "friend" run their X-Files fan site. It was typical 90s fan site, screensavers, Windows Plus themes, horribly edited shipping videos, fan fic, you name it. I think someone noticed we had more hits then Fox's official site. We were sent a cease and desist but we just ignored it. Weeks later the webhost just deleted our site and stopped replying to our emails.

I had recorded each episode, no commercials, on VHS when FX ran marathons. I bought a TV capture card just so I could post screenshots and really lovely GIFs. I ran a Geocities site that reviewed the X-Files comic book issues. (yes there was one).

I'm currently re-watching on Disney+, after not seeing most of these in over 10 years. The early seasons reminded me of all those fan site titles like "geocities.com/MulderItsMe" or a page dedicated to Mulder wearing glasses or a speedo.

im slightly gay for david duchovny for sure, but what an interesting career. always in bad movies with good casts and/or directors, it seems. just half-assing it with the best of em' on movies they knew would suck a little bit

californication was cool to watch cuz you just felt like you were buds with a chill hollywood dude. you felt like you were in the vicinity of getting ridiculous amount of pussy. and then there was kind of a plot and a little bit of softcore porn

To me that's what made X-Files a little special. It was this seemingly low budget show with B-movie level cheese. Even the music sounded like it was from an 80s horror. He could have easily been "that guy" of direct-to-video erotic mystery thrillers. I think his true calling would have been a secondary character on a popular sitcom.

Duchovny was treated for sex addiction years ago, and it eventually ended his marriage.

I'm re-watching 80s Twilight Zone and the first half of season 1 is good but then it falls into heavy boomer themed episodes. One stars a very young Scott Grimes and it about a woman that choose a career over having kids. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Boy_Lost_(The_Twilight_Zone)

This episode is basically telling themselves they are still cool even thought they became Yuppies. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Girl_I_Married

While watching these old seasons I saw a familiar author's name pop up. https://www.denofgeek.com/tv/twilight-zone-george-r-r-martin/

e: thought about this again and I think the odds of this being bad are like 9999:1. maybe if it was made back in the 80s/ early 90s someone could get it to work but TV is so horrible now

How about a lizard woman who was living in centre of the Earth but is now a detective in Victorian England. Her human assistant, Jenny, is also her wife. Oh and they have an alien butler.

SPACE HOMOS posted:

The reason its hard to follow is the reason why the G-men are doing things is a moving goal post. The writers didn't have a 'bible' so much as Chris Carters rantings.

At first it seems they want to make human/alien hybrids. Archives of human DNA to see if they are good subjects for mixing dna. The black goo is an alien that makes... more aliens? But there is a resistance to this (the guys with sewn up eyes and mouths). The bees are related to the human clones, but the bees carry a weapon to kill non hybrids? Mix this in with the smoking man trying to undermine the aliens.... Later seasons say they want to make super humans.

I mean the plot I guess is the FBI met aliens and negotiated a deal, but the deal required human subjects (their kids). Mulder's dad regretted this, but CSM was okay... cause he is really Mulder's dad? They seem to want to collect aliens to test on to reverse engineer a cure to the alien's dna (which I think are in the bees/black goo?). Also the CSM uses Mulder's search for his sister as a tool to motivate Mulder.

Its all very dumb and rereading my post is just as dumb.

Edit: While I think Season 4 and 5 have the most popular episodes, I really like 1 and 2 for how mundane they look.

Edit 2: Actually I really like X. His short story arc is my favorite. Dude wants to help but doesn't want to put his life on the line, then ultimately saves Mulder.

Keep in mind they never had a mythology plot planned. Gillian Anderson got pregnant and they need a reason to write her off for a few weeks in Season 2 so they came up up with the abduction story line and the fans ate it up.

There is no real established story for the aliens. Not because it's an artistic decision, like the Sopranos ending where fans debate for years, but just lovely writing.

The gist of what I can recall after 2 beers:

Aliens landed in Roswell. Shadow agencies formed, soon an agreement between world leaders. Aliens were coming to take over Earth but I don't recall the reason. A virus would be used (this would be where the bees come in) to kill the human race. Hybrids/Clones would survive so the black ops folks (CSM, Bill Mulder, Deep Throat) are told their children would be safe if they were cloned. This is why Samantha is taken (Oh Hoollllllly poo poo let's not talk about that right now)

There are sympathetic aliens, like the Jeremiah Smiths and Older-Samantha's. Or are they hybirds. No...clones. Clones that can be killed only with the ice pick weapon. Their blood is also toxic to humans.

The Black Oil is another alien race, or a faction of the ones we already know. The oil is how they infect and travel from host to host. The Fight The Future movie shows that the oil has been on Earth for a loooooong time.

The ones with their eyes and mouth sealed are clones or aliens that are rebels...I think? The reason their faces are like that is so the Black Oil doesn't infect them.

TL:DR Chris Carter can't write

At the time drama shows had no soundtrack and, to me anyway, the cheesy-ness of it reminded me of low budget horror movies which just made it all better. It was different at the time and pretty soon just became part of the show. But I can totally see watching it in 2024 for the first time where it likely sounds worse than than the soundtrack on CW shows.

I mean, I could see them saying this in the beginning but what does it matter? She became a huge sex symbol and remains so even today. Knowing what we know now, think about the executives at Fox back then.

On the one hand, the way they had her dressed was kind of dowdy. On the other hand, they made her do a strip tease in the pilot. I wonder if that scene was to placate the executives.

She is dressed horribly in her 1st few scenes.

The pilot also has her in bed with a guy when Mulder calls her at night. This was cut out and I think the boyfriend may get one other brief mention a few eps later and is then dropped.
