Inside the happy meal is a cheap mobile phone. Only one app is installed on it. Nest. Weird. You click it. Only one smart device is linked to it, a thermostat. Not your thermostat, you don't have Nest. The thermostat is set rather high. Why would it be set that high? Nobody needs it to be set that high, unless they enjoy wasting energy, wasting money. What if it's set that high for like, a lizard or snake? Well, you reason, the animal should have a dedicated heat lamp. That's just irresponsible, not giving them a dedicated heat lamp. You notice the thermostat is labeled "living room". It's 2pm who's at home and not at work or McDonald's at 2pm? Whoever it is left their living room thermostat at a frankly irresponsible temperature, on a weekday afternoon, where the sun alone should keep the living room at a perfectly reasonable temperature, even if the room has a north exposure. And anyway, why would McDonald's be giving you this information, and the power to do something about it, if they didn't want you to act? This is probably part of their greenwashing corporate responsibility and all that. The thought raises your cycisim hackles. On the other hand, that temperature is really, uncomfortably high. Who needs their living room to be that warm, unless they left all their windows open? Who does that? Teenagers probably. Irresponsible teenagers.
You turn the thermostat down, and chuck the phone in the trash with the rest of the contents of your tray.
