reading about why basic is bad and I don't understand this

quote:

one of my science classes and did a lab involving NaOH, and the pH of 13/14 makes it one of the most basic substances. The bottle warned us that it was corrosive, which caught me off guard. I was under the impression that basic meant not-acidic, which meant gentle. I’m clearly very wrong, especially considering water has a purely neutral pH.

Low pH solutions (we used HCl too) are obviously harsh and dangerous, but if a basic solution like NaOH isn’t acidic, how is it just as harsh?

basic is fine for beginners. it’s easy and it can do simple things. the subroutine calling is archaic, but it works for starting to learn things.

Visual Basic will rot your brain, especially if you try to do anything big with it

basic is good as far as you can look it at for the first time ever and just guess how it works without ever formally learning anything

remembering being a child trying to write a casino game and not knowing what to do after i used up all the variables A through Z because none of the type in programs in my basic for kids book ever used longer names

I think I must have had some kind of reference that mentioned functions like sin() and ln() etc (I was like 10 and we hadn’t done trig at school I had no idea what they were) and I would make for loops that plugged numbers in and looked at the outputs and thru a series of iterations I started multiplying the output by a constant and plotting the points

and after getting some results I kept trying all
sorts of different combinations and eventually did something like

for loop x from 1 to whatever

plot sin(x)*100,cos(x)*100

and it drew a fuckin circle on the screen !!

when maxwell realised that light was an em wave, that was like this. like I had discovered how a circle was made

I am still proud about stumbling onto that lol

LowRes NX and also qb64 (despite double forks due to open source dev infighting)

STOS was a pretty crap BASIC even by the standards of the time (functions what are those) but it taught me to code and then I moved on to Modula-2 because compilers for that cost half what they did for C for the ST and I ended up the withered husk of a software engineer you see today, so, who's to say it was all bad.
