anyways the real answer is Carol of The Bells. the tempo and beats are hella sick and tis a timeless classic. versions that go all out with high energy and bass are bad rear end but any version is good: piano, orchestral, heavy metal, electric guitar, bardcore, wind instruments, you name it

obviously instrumental versions are exempt but lol at reactionary singers leaving out "chains shall He break/for the slave is our brother/And in His name all oppression shall cease."

the answer is apparently "All I Want for Christmas is You" by Mariah Carey, since it's back at #1 on the billboard chart, which it's done every year since 2019 and it's been on the top 25 since like 2012 lol just a juggarnaut of a christmas song, jesus

here's my previous analysis, reposted from an old thread:

spent about 3 hours today on a drive listening to classic christmas songs and realized I don't really know anything about the main dudes from the Real Man Singer era that sang christmas songs

Bing Crosby: as far as I can tell this is the baseline Real Man Singer

Dean Martin: a little less deep, a little more swing. always seems to have a smile on his face

Frank Sinatra: dean martin but instead of smiling he will kick your rear end and maybe your wife's rear end too. a bit of a bittersweet quality to his christmas songs as he seems to be a guy who has gone through some poo poo and is being wistful

Perry Como: seems to be at baseline, no notes

Johnny Mathis: sounds like bing crosby but if he was a small old man. has a nice warmth

Tony Bennett: i think he came a bit later? basically frank sinatra if he turned a big dial labeled "vegas" about 3/4 of the way

Burl Ives: johnny mathis but a cartoon character

Nat King Cole: bing crosby but black maybe?

I love me some Trans-Siberian Orchestra too, of course (and I really need to catch one of their shows someday before I die)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ivlv4J5uiag

is a great version of What Child of This, and the transition to a totally different song at about 2:48 just...okay, I am one of those old saps that can be moved to tears by pretty much any dramatic music, okay? I'm not ashamed to admit it, and the sort of combined desperation and hope the singer evokes here nails me every drat time.

(sorry if this is too real for cspam

no i'm not)

Also O Come O Come Emmanuel has always been one of my favorite old hymns, and I really like this performance:
