Madame Web is the key to all of this- if we get Madame Web working- cause she’s a more dynamic character that we’ve ever had in these movies.

Other than Harrison Ford in the first couple of movies, I don’t know if an actor in a Star Wars has ever understood the assignment as well as Carl Weathers in Mando.

Dakota Johnson talking poo poo about the movie on her publicity tour is probably marginally more meaningful exposure for it than if she pretended it wasn’t terrible, so it’s truly a victimless crime.

One thing I found funny watching 3 Body Problem was the realization there’s a very specifically sized knit cap that’s visual shorthand for a character having cancer. I imagine it came to be from people losing their hair from chemo and having to wear the hat to stay warm. In 3BP he eschews radiation and still has a full head of hair, but he starts wearing the hat anyway because that’s what you do when you have cancer I guess.

But in the case of death videos I would simply click on it

Well it’s not like actual footage, it’s more like detailed 10-15 minute summaries with some stock footage and crude animation that usually amounts to “a guy got stuck in a small unreachable place and died”. And I’m like “drat, that sucks. Okay yeah, tell me about another one.”

Rogue One isn't helped by the first two thirds being boring as gently caress and the third act being entertaining but also hacked to bits with reshoots. Krennic is a great villain and the third act is mostly pretty good, but there's too much going against the movie by studio mandate that keeps me from recommending it.

Rogue One is a fringe case where said studio meddling (i.e., bringing in Tony Gilroy for a re-work) is probably what gives us that pretty good third act. I don't know, maybe Edwards' cut was something that really came together into a coherent, thoughtful, and entertaining whole, but after seeing The Creator a few weeks ago, I'm not inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt. His movies sure look good, though.

And the badass Vader scene makes no sense when viewed with A New Hope it's clearly informed by Vader's pop culture status.

I thought it made sense enough- he's personally leading the charge through the big ship trying to get there before the small ship escapes, because they've seen the movie and they know that's where the Princess and the plans are going to go. At the beginning of ANH, they have the little ship docked to their own ship, so there's not really any sense of urgency as long as they keep an eye out for the escape pods.

I enjoyed about 2/3rds of the Watchmen TV show, but it really wasn't helped (in terms of audience reception) by having the branding and baggage that comes with being a Watchmen "sequel". I can easily envision it as its own thing divorced from the Watchmen characters/backstory/IP, but it probably wouldn't have been made. It's very much its own thing and doesn't have much interested in replicating the tone of Moore's comic or engaging the themes that he seemed interested in.

The Watchmen TV show can be read as a failed attempt to adapt/engage with the comic, but it’s more charitably read as a completely unrelated story crammed into Watchmen branding. As an extrapolation of Moore’s comic, it doesn’t work at all, but as season 4 of the Leftovers, it’s a solid C+.
