First off, I've seen so much Disney astroturfing on forums lately. Like I guarantee if you scrub through SA you'll find some accounts posting a suspicious amount of "I sure do enjoy my Disney+ account(tm) fellow young people(r)!". This whole discussion is bought and paid for because Disney is terrified of losing relevancy. Beginning and end of story. But pretending for half a second that's not the case.

Disney is afraid of no longer being relevant, so they're going to astroturf SA. That does make sense

Watched The Beekeeper with a friend yesterday, I have not been in a theater before with multiple people laughing at things that were not jokes. The catalyst for his revenge spree is Phylicia Rashad losing all her money on an internet scam, and Statham says "Stealing from the elderly is just as bad as stealing from a baby. Maybe even worse. A baby has parents"

Audition is good, almost a critique of bad romcoms and how a lot of people's actions in them are kind of hosed up. the scene in Asami's apartment was worse for me than the final scene.

Did a better picture of what happened with that The Thing prequel scrapping all of its physical FX for digital ever come out? Was it literally "durrrrr I'm a C-Suite guy and audiences won't accept non-digital effects; everyone's doing it!" or was it actually a cost thing or something like that

Re watched The Thing a couple days ago, still one of the few perfect movies

Sort of. I think the reasoning was that while the practical models looked good, they only worked from one specific angle and the whole set had to be custom built to accommodate them. So if they wanted more scenes then they had to make unique models and sets for each shot, all of which takes a lot of time and planning and gets expensive fast.

By comparison the CGI didn't look as good, but allowed for much more flexibility while filming and overall was just faster to do, and in the end time = money.

Meanwhile rob bottin and carpenter figured that poo poo out 40 years ago

To be fair how many practical effect movie workshops exist today compared to in the 80's?

Meanwhile it seems like there are so many CGI sweatshops in the world that they are fighting over contracts to the point where they are willing to go bankrupt just to be the lowest bidder on projects.

Savini has his "school" in Pittsburgh, but yeah it's a shame watching movies like The Thing and The Howling and knowing where effects were going to end up.

The Terrifier series has steam because there is a decent amount of people that can still appreciate practical gore and monster effects

The Barbie drama is frustrating because it seems to have devolved entirely into "because this movie is good, it should have a nomination in every category it could possibly be nominated in". But movies and performances can be good for different reasons. Supporting acting is different from lead acting. It doesn't mean Margot was less good than Gosling or whatever, it could just mean it's not really a "lead actor" sort of movie/role.

But people won't let that stop them of course, it's all about the thing you like winning the most awards.

It's just more culture war poo poo. less to do with whether the movie is good or not and more that it's "important"
