I took advantage of the local cinema's tightarse tuesday and saw both Dream Scenario and Minus One today.

Both good movies in their own little way.

Only issue with Godzilla had nothing to do with the movie but the audience. I tend to avoid watching movies in the cinema that attract a heap of people, and I was surprised that there were a fair few people at this showing. For reference Dream Scenario had 10 max people, Godzilla had about 60. One person sounded like they brought a picnic hamper there was that much going on.

And also, if you're going to take your kids to a movie that is subbed
A) Make sure they can read
B) If they can't, then probably refrain from having to explain everything to them
C) And probably avoid loading up an episode of Bluey on your phone for your bored kid, with the sound on, right at the climax of the movie where they cut the sound to ramp up the tension

obviously a classic for many reasons, but I didn't expect it to be as funny as it was. the main character is constantly quipping except the quips were... funny? in character? increasing the tension of the scene? what the gently caress???

Really? I've seen the trailers before most of the movies I'v seen recently, and it looks pretty hokey/rubbish

It’s not hokey exactly, but it is very writerly and is a deliberate (successful) attempt to recreate the look and feel of a mildly quirky 70s coming of age comedic drama. The story isn’t trying to take any chances and the writer definitely wants you to congratulate them on their handsomely assembled sentences; quickly into your airing you’ll figure out if you find that to be cozy or obnoxious. I thought it was a great example of its type and it put me in a Christmassy mood two weeks too late.

Yeah. I think is the moment in the trailer where my eyes rolled.

Ha! I know exactly the type of people you're describing.

Our national film and sound archives is close by to me. I've just come back from watching a 35mm print of LA Confidential, and will be checking out Mullholland Drive tomorrow night. They've announced their yearly line up and it's really good.

But they also do this monthly vinyl thing. Usually it has a theme. You bring in a record, and then if it's picked you introduce it, why it links to the theme and why you like it. Then they play it on their really expensive sound system. The vinyl equivalent of those film nerds are always there, and there's a few of them that always just have to have the last word - think multiple Josh's on the RLM crew who after everything has died down and the moment has passed, has to chime in with their two cents...

They had a show called Red Shoe Diaries which was just an excuse to have famous actresses on the downside of their career do softcore. I specifically remember watching an episode because Ally Sheedy was in it. She played a woman who liked to wear wigs while having sex with her husband. She did not do any nudity. The plot of the ep had to do with their maid wearing her wigs and the husband mistaking her for Ally Sheedy and accidentally banging the wrong lady. The 90s were pretty hosed up.

David Duchovny was the Red Shoe Diaries equivalent of the crypt keeper. Except he was a sad guy who read people’s letters at the beginning and end of every episode, not a cackling corpse who made puns.

:thunk:

I think having the actual crypt keeper doing the Red Shoe intros/outros would’ve been an improvement.

I saw Duchovny on an Eric Andre segment recently. The guy looks tired of life.

Whereas Gillian Anderson seems to get better and better as she ages.

Maybe they have some Dorian Grey type bond?

Waltzing Along posted:

The main thing is analytics. Number crunchers found every way to break the game and it ruined it. And the league was slow to adjust to write rules to counter some of it.

That's the short answer.

The longer answer is analytics showed that many of the aspects of the game that were exciting were actually bad plays. Stealing bases, bunting, having pitchers pitch deep into games. All gone. It got so bad that players essentially were constantly playing out of position on the field. The league finally said okay enough. You guys have to stay relatively close to whatever position you are playing. And if you aren't going to steal, well we'll make the bases bigger which shortens the distance between them. And we will handicap the pitcher to make it even easier to steal.

Another problem was that due to all this, the batters and pitchers were taking forever to do anything because they had to get into the perfect mindset, position or whatever to throw or hit which made games longer. So the league instituted a pitch clock.

Oddly, the thing the fans want the most, that would make the biggest difference, they will not do. And that is use robot umpires to get near perfect strike zones all the time. Baseball, unlike football or basketball, can pretty much entirely be umpired by robots and fast instant replays. There is no reason to ever get calls wrong. But they won't do it for stupid reasons.

Back in the 80s, the game had reached a pinnacle, of sorts. Years upon years of the game being played the same way and there were many valid ways to construct a team and have success. Then steroids took over and it was never the same again. Baseball has gone through a lot of changes, but the way the game was played was pretty constant for quite some time. Until analytics completely changed how everything was viewed.
