1. Resident Evil 3: Nemesis (PS1), 1/4

I wasn't a huge fan of this when it first came out. The dodge system felt like poo poo and I found the pacing uneven, but over the years I've warmed up to it and enjoy the hell out of it. The dodging is a nice idea in theory but it's so inconsistent and awkward to use. It's nice to get it down and straight up embarrass nemesis 1v1, but it could have been a lot better. The story is alright, with some insight into umbrella and all that stuff if you're interested in it, but Nikolai is pretty wack as an antagonist so that's whatever

I fought nemesis every chance I got with the help of freeze rounds and those bonuses are fun, and got the ending where Barry literally swoops in and saves the day, so that's cool

2. Mega Man X (SNES), 1/9

Seeing X2 in the IZGC made me realize that I haven't beaten the original game since playing the MSDOS version in the mid-90s, so this was a cool walk down memory lane in that I uhhh remembered close to nothing about the endgame and much of the secret stuff. Still got all the energy tanks, heart tanks, upgrades, and the hadouken. Just a great game all around, and I really need to check out the later ones.

I held off on playing Origin for years and I regretted it, it's one of Falcom's best Ys outings imo

Falcom ftw, now they gotta make the fuckin remake of 5, the SNES game isn't bad it's just bland and way too easy even with the Expert rerelease

Good soup!
Nov 2, 2010

5 has its good parts. Gameplay wise it's like a prototype of where the series started to go with 6 and OiF that further refined the combat, and the fundamentals of the story are interesting enough even if it feels like it doesn't really go anywhere with any of it. I know a lot of people arent huge fans of the visuals or how the music is more orchestral in nature, but I actually like both and Field of Gale is 100% one of the best songs Falcom has done

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kjFXyC2UhMA

So much of it is middle of the road though. The dungeons are boring, most of the characters are boring, the magic system seems like a cool idea with mixing elements and such but, again, boring.

3. Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown (PC), 1/18

Enjoyed the hell out of this. The story outside of the immediate plot with your own pilot was meandering and boring throughout much of it, but it's hard to complain when the gameplay is in top form for the series. I went with the F-22 for the final set of missions, and one of my only other major gripes was that the aircraft tree seemed ultimately underutilized. I'm used to gaining a decent amount of planes/upgrades, but even with pulling in a ton of rewards from missions, it still felt like I barely got 20% of the overall tree unlocked. Not sure if I love it enough to NG+ to get all the extra stuff

The part with your radar being all messed up from the communications satellites going down was cool, but jesus why did they make it take so long to identify enemies. I felt like the fuckin ships in Tie Fighter could inspect vehicles faster than I could figure out friend from foe at times, and even at an A10 basically floating motionless above targets with them in my sights, I would still have to make another approach. The whole thing felt way too fuckin random, and getting yelled out for shooting down choppers before identifying them was annoying

I'm still surprised they haven't remastered or even just rereleased the PS2 games

man, no checkpoints would be tough, there were about two or three missions in 7 that I was thankful to have them. A few of those missions would let you get super far along, like 15-20 minutes, and they still wouldn't throw you a lifeboat

It does add a nice challenge most of the time, though, so if it just scratches the AC itch, I'll have to check it out during a sale

6. Max Payne (PS2), 2/11

a youtube video comparing the ports of Max Payne had me curious about revisiting the PS2 version and it's not a terrible port, but the load times after each death made me miss the original PC version. I think the biggest issue is that the movement isnt true analog movement but instead just mimics WASD. It makes navigating the narrow jumps across rooftops and other obstacles a complete pain in the rear end

The writing is as cheesy as ever and the set pieces are great. Maybe once I'm done Nioh and Mother 3 I'll replay MP2

This also reminded me that one of my favorite little features of the third game was having a Sam Lake-like model of Max in multiplayer who spends the entire match just screaming lines from the first game. it's funny as hell to get a bunch of kills and hear James McCaffrey yelling at the top his lungs stuff like "I MIGHT'VE LAUGHED IF I REMEMBERED HOW"

Still an outstanding game and a great way to round-out the "main" trilogy. Team Silent did such an awesome job with the callbacks and references to the first game without getting in the way of telling a proper follow-up to all the bizarre cult stuff from the original. Heather is a cool character, too.

Played it through PCSX2 with the widescreen and 60FPS patches and can we talk about how good this game looks even now???

I mean, granted, I'm still working with a 1080p monitor, but that doesn't change the fact that just a simple upscale still looks impressive, it's a perfect example of what having great art direction can do for a game

SH4 is ok, just one of those games I have no desire to play again

I was thinking of adding Nioh to this list but tbh I think I'm gonna tap out. thought I was in the home stretch but turns out there's one more region to go and a few more sprawling annoying missions to go through and I don't think I have it in me. It goes from being enjoyable as hell, to ok, and by the end the flaws slowly start to become more and more apparent and even with endgame gear and weapons, the loving constant one- and two-shots from random enemies is irritating

9. Brandish: The Dark Revenant (PSP), 3/20

This was the right kind of old-school dungeon crawler. I actually rented the original Brandish on the SNES in the mid-90s, but couldn't figure it out. The behind-the-back camera was an interesting idea in theory, but unlike the other ports and the original version, they didn't put in a minimap on the screen. Navigation and orientation is atrocious because of it. Not sure why they didn't just do Mode 7, but maybe it looked bad or it was just too early in the system's lifespan for it.

I effectively forgot about the game until a few weeks ago when a friend suggested giving the PSP remake shot. I grew up on tons of DOS dungeon crawlers so I felt right at home with the grid movement and sidestepping and such. The story isn't anything special but the game moves along at a brisk pace even when going for 100% on each floor. Having to fill out each and every map, finding every secret, sounds like a fuckin homework assignment, but thankfully you move at a reasonable pace and the rewards for destroying completion stones are generally helpful and there are quite a few that whip rear end

I say the game has a brisk pace, but there is one exception. It absolutely craters when you end up in The Dark Zone. True to its name, the entire floor is shrouded in darkness, which is annoying enough, but they've also added in pits all over the place at random. On other floors you can figure out where a pit is easily because the ground will have a slightly different texture, or you can just drop a steel ball on the ground to reveal it. It becomes a frustrating experience as you tiptoe around the floor, dealing with strong enemies, pits that can ruin your poo poo, and an annoying teleportation route to the second and thankfully final floor of the zone—which is actually even worse.

Instead of a floor of some random pits, they now have them set up to drop you to the lower floor. This can happen on other floors, though not to this extent. With the entire floor completely black, you have to inch your way across every single square on the map and use what felt like hundreds of those steel balls just to see where the pathway is. AFAIK, that's the only way to figure out where to walk, otherwise you fall to the lower level and either have to make your way back to the teleporter circle on foot to get to the staircase back up, or use a warp spell (which also scales with your level so no matter what, it will cost you all of your MP, hope you love warping, using a potion, warping, using another potion, again and again and again if you end up making a single mistake). It is an agonizing part of the game, and I don't give a gently caress if it was that way when it came out in the 80s or whenever it did. That poo poo loving SUCKS rear end and it should have been left behind. Falcom did loving Oath in Felghana so dont fuckin bullshit me that they arent afraid to change things with a remake or a remaster

The warp spell is also a slight letdown as it only lets you move to any explored square on the floor you're currently on. Hope you picked up that treasure or got 100% on that one place that is now 7 floors down, because you'll still have to warp, use a potion, warp, use a potion, warp, use a potion, etc. to make it back. The good thing is that it lets you bypass annoying puzzles and get to otherwise unreachable spots and the game is good about giving you rewards that don't make it seem like you waste your time.

The music is solid, and it was cool switching back and forth between the remake's soundtrack and the original 8-bit tracks. True to form, Falcom did a great job with updating every song, and there are a handful of standout pieces

I'm interested in trying the sequel on the SFC which has a translation patch (that is apparently well done), as they fixed the major issue with the original and finally added in a minimap that is always visible. I'm a little sad they never opted to remake any of the sequels because there's a lot to like here

So now, idk what the hell I'm moving on to. I guess getting back into Mother 3 in earnest or something else?????

The Hobbit movies are brutally awful, they somehow managed to be joyless and convoluted and felt like they completely missed the point of the book

I hear people have done some competent re-edits that turn it into one film and are apparently an improvement but I never had time to check them out. Honestly the Rankin+Bass special is still wonderful and I am stoked to read the book and watch the movie with my daughters when they're a bit older

Come to think of it, the only "fan edit" type thing I've ever watched was the Lynch Dune one that put a lot of the cut scenes back in and it's wild what they got rid of versus what they kept. For some reason Dino de Laurentiis and Co. thought it was a good decision to wipe out stuff like the initial explanation of the Lisan al Gaib when they first arrive on Arrakis which is just mind boggling. It's a whopping 90 seconds and sets up the entire movie essentially and it still got the axe lol. The movie is still a bit of a mess but with the other scenes back in it's definitely better

The despecialized star wars movies might fall into that same category but I'm not sure given all the guy did was get to as close to an hd version of the original trilogy as possible

10. Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles (PSP) 4/18

Kind of a random choice but it only took about a day to rescue everyone and get most of the stages done. I love the original and the remake does some things well but I feel like it sticks close to the original formula almost too much for its own good. Also the 3d models definitely have some weird hit detection or hit boxes because even when accounting for when certain bosses have iframes, watching richter's whip sail clearly through an enemy model was annoying as gently caress.

Right after I finished the modern version I went back to the PCE one and you can't gently caress with perfection when it comes to the sprites, its so good

Richter's English va is pretty bad and the dude doing dracula suffers from that issue of sounding like a massive goony rear end dude doing his absolute best to sound imposing but instead it's funny lol

yeah that's a fair point on the voice acting lol. I played PCE Rondo a long time ago with that patch that adds in both English text and the modern dub and it's funny how appropriate it ends up sounding, like some alternate universe where Konami actually released it outside of Japan

12. Lufia: The Fortress of Doom (SNES), 4/26

I'm legitimately impressed by this lol. At first glance, it looks like one of those super dated early SNES jrpgs that you know may have been big at the time but is wack now, and it is in some ways. The menus SUCK lol they loving suck rear end in a weird way, the game feels dated but nothing like the menu which you navigate like some early RPG before they figured this poo poo out. Imo I felt like around this time they were still toying with some things but there were some conventions in menu design getting established. The loving spell names are silly rear end nonsense, poo poo like "DEAD" or whatever being the revive spell lmao. They also have an annoyingly small cap on your inventory, Taito what the hell dudes what's wrong with your brains,

The walk speed is straight up trolling you the entire time, you move extra slow in dungeons but sprint like your loving on drugs in towns, it's ridiculous

The music is a flawed mixed bag of songs that are sometimes just a mess of instruments, the battle theme is weird but not in a brutally terrible way like Chrono Cross

Still, the story ends up working because it has an odd level of ambition running through it?? Idk it's not just the cool intro (for the time!) where you see the previous heroes win, there's some other stuff too. The male/female leads are already established as just straight up in love versus some dumb will they/won't they dynamic that a ton of jrpgs have. The script is, again, for the time, pretty good with a bunch of humor and character interactions that end up giving it a deceptive amount of a personality

the ending was the most ambitious part, it aims for a solid, bittersweet ending with a payoff that isnt insulting or stupid rear end poo poo, and it actually sticks the landing??? Again, purely for the era, it's a cool way to see why it (reportedly) sold as well as it did and got a sequel/prequel that improved on everything and is one of the best on a system that has loving chrono trigger on it and I think that's impressive

You know what's not impressive though, the loving random encounter rate almost gave me a stroke several times at first so I buckled a did most of it fast forward and I regret nothing, and it also explains the long rear end play time. though I'm sure if I'm playing it straight I'd have a much lower opinion so I guess that means I have no credibility, drat

E: lmao just remembered that the villain in Lufia 2 calls your party little hoochees

Saw a set was added on RetroAchievements and even though I'm not one to chase down cheevos, I do like seeing the completion numbers go up so I said gently caress it, haven't played the TG16 version in years. Music still loving whips rear end and the sense of progression is still nice. The choppy rear end parallax scrolling is fuckin dire, the platforming is floaty here compared to other versions, but the whole thing at least avoids the buggy, grating nature of the SNES port. Also lol forever at the voice acting, it's like they were actively doing a terrible job and not giving a poo poo, it's incredible

Beat it in a single late morning so I can't complain, throw another game on the pile
